Step1. Set up OpenVPN Server on Your Router

1. Log in to the web-based interface of the router. If you dont know how to do that, please refer to

2. Go to Advanced > VPN Server > OpenVPN, and select Enable VPN Server.

Note:

Before you enable VPN Server, we recommend you configure Dynamic DNS Service or assign a static IP address for routers WAN port and synchronize your System Time with internet.

The first time you configure the OpenVPN Server, you may need to Generate a certificate before you enable the VPN Server.

3. Select the Service Type for OpenVPN Server: UDP, TCP.

4. Enter a VPN Service Port to which a VPN device connects, and the port number should be between 1024 and 65535. Please write down the Service Port.

If Youre Running Linksys Firmware

Open up your browser and enter in your routers IP address . Youll be prompted for a username and password. The defaults for a Linksys WRT54GL are admin and admin.

Click the Browse button and navigate to the extracted TomatoUSB VPN files. Select the tomato-NDUSB-1.28.8754-vpn3.6.trx file, and click the Upgrade button in the web interface. Your router will start installing TomatoUSB VPN, and should take less than a minute to complete. After about a minute, open up a command prompt and type ipconfig release to determine your routers new IP address. Then type ipconfig renew. The IP address to the right of Default Gateway is your routers IP address.

Note: After installing Tomato go to Administration > Configuration and select Erase all NVRAM.

Creating The Configuration Files For The Client

Before we edit any configuration files, we should set up a dynamic DNS service. Use this service if your ISP issues you a dynamic external IP address every so often. If you have a static external IP address, skip down to the next step.

We suggest using DynDNS.com, a service that allows you to point a hostname to a dynamic IP address. Its important for OpenVPN to always know your networks public IP address, and by using DynDNS, OpenVPN will always know how to locate your network no matter what your public IP address is. Sign up for a hostname and point it to your public IP address. Once youve signed up for the service, dont forget to set up the auto-update service in Tomato under Basic > DDNS.

Now back to configuring OpenVPN. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files \OpenVPN\sample-config if youre running 64-bit Windows 7 or C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\sample-config if youre running 32-bit Windows 7. In this folder you will find three sample configuration files were only concerned with the client.ovpn file.

Right click on client.ovpn and open it with Notepad or Notepad++. Youll notice your file will look like the picture below:

Virtual Private Networks are very useful, whether youre traveling the world or just using public Wi-Fi at a coffee shop in your hometown. But you dont necessarily have to pay for a VPN serviceyou could host your own VPN server at home.

Your home Internet connections upload speed will really matter here. If you dont have much upload bandwidth, you may just want to use a paid VPN service. Internet service providers usually offer much less upload bandwidth than they do download bandwidth. Still, if you do have the bandwidth, setting up a VPN server at home might be just the right thing for you.

How To Set Up A VPN On A Router

When using one of the router firmware builds described above, setting up a VPN is fairly straightforward.

Youll need your VPN login credentials from your VPN provider. You do still need a subscription to a VPN service.

If you need some help choosing, check our top ranked VPNs list. For a couple of great options for VPNs that work with routers, check out our ExpressVPN or ProtonVPN review.

Many VPN services provide detailed instructions on how to set up their VPN on a router, and this usually consists of a list of steps to take to set up the VPN connection and DNS, install the encryption certificates, and select a server.

Again, this is more time consuming than simply using the VPN app on your laptop, but it does protect your entire network rather than a single device.

Its also pretty fun to set up, if your into that kind of thing.

  • Thank you brother. This is very informative. My situation is a little unique as my landlord works for our ISP. I wanted to know if theres a way to customize the router settings so that my PC is the only thing using the VPN. But I dont want to cause any issues for my landlord at work so Im hesitant to do anything. But all these streaming sites are expensive and I was just reading about Hotstar and all the perks of using it. Its kind of you to take the time to write this article. I really appreciate it and I know everyone else does too. Peace and good health!

  • Option One: Get A Router With VPN Capabilities

Rather than attempting to do this yourself, you can buy a pre-built VPN solution. Higher-end home routers often come with built-in VPN serversjust look for a wireless router that advertises VPN server support. You can then use your routers web interface to activate and configure the VPN server. Be sure to do some research and pick a router that supports the type of VPN you want to use.

RELATED:How to Use a Custom Firmware on Your Router and Why You Might Want To

Custom router firmware is basically a new operating system you can flash onto your router, replacing the routers standard operating system with something new. DD-WRT is a popular one, and OpenWrt also works well.

If you have a router that supports DD-WRT, OpenWrt, or another third-party router firmware, you can flash it with that firmware to get more features. DD-WRT and similar router firmware include built-in VPN server support, so you can host a VPN server even on routers that dont come with VPN server software.

Be sure to pick up a supported routeror check your current router to see if its supported by DD-WRT. Flash the third-party firmware and enable the VPN server.

    Best VPNs For Routers

Using a VPN on your router doesn’t mean picking whichever. Even though the application features won’t be the deciding factor here, some VPNs will make your setup much easier. Most premium VPNs have extensive tutorials on the subject. Even if something fails, customer support agents should reach out to their helping hand. Here are a couple of the best VPNs for home routers.

How To Use Local Network To Access Internet While Connected In VPN

If you use a VPN connection to securely access a workplace , then all network data are transferred through the VPN connection to the remote network. In simple words, the remote VPN servers network card becomes a new route that connects your computer to the remote network and at the same time the VPN server becomes your new gateway to access the Internet through the remote workplaces Internet connection.

This means that if the VPN server is set up to allow Internet connectivity , then you can also access the Internet via the remote network’s Internet connection, otherwise if the VPN server isnt set up to allow Internet connectivity, then you can not access Internet at all. In the first case, the Internet speed is slowed down due to line speed limits and also because all network packets are re-routed through the VPNs server network card and in the second case, the Internet connection is impossible.

To bypass these problems and use your local Internet connection to access Internet while connected to VPN, follow the steps below:

It Prevents Your Internet Service Provider From Harvesting Your Data

If you read the contract you signed with your internet service provider carefully, you probably know how they can collect and use your personal information.

Usually, ISPs keep track of many aspects of your online activity, including the websites you visit, pages you frequently browse, time you connect and disconnect, and how much time you spend on a website. On top of that, theyre interested in your email address, current location, phone number, and social media data too. And the rest you know: they can sell this information for marketing purposes. If youre against this, you should use a VPN.

    VPN on a Router

Microsoft Windows has a built-in function for hosting VPN servers, but it uses the out-dated and insecure VPN protocol PPTP.

Instead, we recommend that you set up an OpenVPN server using OpenVPNs software.

You can find detailed instructions for setting up an OpenVPN server on your Windows device, including commands, on OpenVPNs website.

Here are the basics of setting up a VPN server on Windows:

  • Change firewall settings to allow inbound connections and set up port forwarding.
  • Install OpenVPN and ensure that the EasyRSA box is checked on the Choose Components section of the installation.
  • Install the TAP drivers when prompted.
  • Configure EasyRSA this is a tool used to create certificate authorities, and request and sign certificates.
  • Generate the Certificate authority and VPN server certificates.
  • Build client certificates the client is the device you will use to connect to the VPN server .
  • Create configuration files for the VPN server and VPN clients.
  • Configure each VPN client with the generated files.
  • Connect to the VPN server from the client device.
  • As always, test your VPN for leaks to ensure that your connection is secure.
  • Now you can connect to your Windows VPN server while youre out and about.

    Setting Up The VPN Client

First get your router talking to the Internet on one side and your local area network on the other. Then set up any more advanced network settings you need, such as Quality of Service or access controls. Only once the router is fully humming should you consider installing your VPN client.

To do that, you will need to navigate to the VPN tab under Services. From there, check the Enable Bubble next to “Start Open VPN Client.” At this point, there is no single set of instructions to make this work. The settings will be completely unique to the VPN provider. However, there are ready-made instructions for setting up your VPN client on DD-WRT for several of PCMag’s top VPN players. For example, NordVPN has DD-WRT setup instructions here, and Private Internet Access VPN has the same thing for its VPN here. Some VPN brands will want to install their own software, some will want to use OpenVPN. Just follow the instructions for your VPN brand, and you’ll be right on track.

The Dangers Of Using A VPN On Home Computers For Work And What To Do Instead

As a security professional, I have the privilege of seeing a variety of decisions for security architectures, policies, implementations and technology over the last three decades. Some of the decisions by IT and security professionals are innovative, secure and even cutting-edge, while others are downright cringe-worthy and laden with potential risk. One security decision I’ve seen is allowing the installation of your organizations virtual private network software on an employees home computer for remote access.

While some security professionals may think of this as an acceptable practice, this policy is high risk with an undesirable attack vector when permitting access into your environment. For example, consider the following:

    Lower Malware Defense

Home users are typically local administrators for their personal computers. They rarely create secondary standard user accounts for daily usage. This makes them more susceptible to malware that can take advantage of them. To that end, the vast majority of malware needs administrative rights to infect a system, and home users typically do not place any restrictions on their access for the simple fact of convenience. The older the home computer operating system, the worse the operating system is at defending against malware requiring administrative rights for exploiting the system.

    Multiple Users

    Lack Of Authority

    Inability To Secure Host

    Lack Of Protective Resources

    Openvpn Between Friends Or Family

I have many VPNs up and running, some for remote devices, and some for site-to-site connections. Im only going to discuss two of them in detail today for brevity, and because I thought they were the most interesting.

My oldest son, my brother, and I all live in the North Texas area. I live in the northern part of city named Keller. My brother lives in a small town called Kennedale. And my son lives in West Fort Worth. My brother is 23 miles away as the bird flies, while my son is 14 miles away.

So lets stop right here. Some of you are already saying 23 miles away? Why do you need a VPN between houses? You should just use Ubiquiti AirFibers! At that distance youll get 1.5 gigabit between you! No need for a VPN between friends and family!. Well, we actually considered doing just this. And that would have been awesome. Unfortunately it was just not meant to be! If you look at the AirFiber planning map you can see we are link obstructed at both locations do to the terrain between our houses.

So no AirFibers for us. In fact, the only solution that would fix this would be for us to both install towers at our houses and install the AirFibers atop them. However, these towers would have to have been 246 feet tall! I dont think our neighbors or the city would be too happy if were to do this! So VPN it is then!

    Disadvantages Of A VPN Router

Making A Dedicated VPN Home Router Using A Regular Router TP Link WR940N Private Internet Access PIA

There are indeed some disadvantages of VPN routers. The one that will probably put off the most people is the hardware cost.

The basic router you get from your ISP is unlikely to be VPN compatible, nor will you be able to flash it with a firmware that is. The type of router that is compatible with a VPN is generally much more expensive, with the most basic models starting at around $50, but can run way higher than that if you want something with a bit more grunt.

If you have a lot of devices connecting to your WiFi at once, your router will need more processing power in order to keep up with the constant encryption and decryption for the VPN. For most home applications this shouldnt be an issue, and a consumer grade VPN compatible router should be just fine.

Something else worth bearing in mind is that, when running a VPN on your phone or computer, you get the full feature set of the VPN app, which usually supports several VPN protocols and encryption suites, and allows you to quickly alter the configuration.

A VPN on a router, on the other hand, requires manual configuration, and often only supports OpenVPN . It is also more laborious to change the server location on a VPN router.
