Does A VPN Hide Your Ip

Why you should be using a VPN (CNET Top 5)

Short answer: yes. A VPN hides your IP address from the websites you visit. However, you will still have an IP address but it will be an IP address from the VPN’s server. That’s what keeps you anonymous.

Hiding your IP isn’t the last word in privacy though, as you still need to ensure you don’t give personal data out online.

What Can A VPN Do For Businesses

In an era of business defined by security breaches, the best case scenario is keeping your business’ data is protected as possible. Unfortunately, with employees working from home and hybrid work becoming the new norm, it’s getting harder and harder to secure your business from cyber criminals. That’s where a good VPN comes in handy.

By funneling all your employee work through the private, encrypted tunnel that is a VPN, you’ll be able to ensure that your team isn’t compromising the security of your network by working at home or even at a coffee shop. It can protect customer data, internal documents, employees records, and virtually all other sensitive company information. Essentially, you’ll be enjoy end-to-end encryption across your company, so there’s very little risk of a breach.

In most cases, VPN providers even offer specific business-facing plans. These plans are typically priced on a per user per month basis, and offer additional business features, like a control panel to manage accounts, active directory integrations, and added layers of security like two-factor authentication and kill switches.

Security Encryption And Features

The features, security, and encryption of the tool are three other vital things you need to consider. Many VPNs come with some sort of AES encryption code. AES encryption with 128-bits is secure enough. However, for maximum security, you should opt for AES encryption with 256-bits.

VPN services use different protocols. When it comes to security and performance, the best protocol is OpenVPN. Hence, if security is your top priority, then you should opt for a tool that has OpenVPN as its default protocol.

Some VPN services also come with WireGuard or their own protocol, and both of them are highly acceptable. The number of servers the company has is also important. While it is difficult to state the exact number of servers that is the right number, we recommend you choose a service with more servers in more locations and more countries.

The server should spread across the globe, as this would give you a much wider reach. The company should have more servers in highly populated and popular places to avoid traffic congestion and lags. Our recommendation is a minimum of 100 servers.

How To Secure Your Internet Connection With A VPN

10 December 2017

A VPN is a useful way to maintain your online privacy and security

VPNs, or Virtual Private Networks, have been in the news a lot lately. In July, there was the revelation that Apple had removed VPNs from the Chinese App Store, and more recently in October, it turned out that VPNs were an effective safeguard against the worrying Krack Wi-Fi vulnerability.

Even with all the publicity, there are plenty of people who still dont know what a VPN is and how to use it the name alone can seem strange and abstract to the average consumer. However, using a VPN couldnt be simpler. Lets take a quick look at how the software works and why its an essential tool for your digital life.

A VPN secures your connection and keeps your private data private, but it can do much more than that. A VPN can mask your IP address to make it seem as if youre located in a different country, allowing you to access geo-restricted content.

This means you can unblock websites that may otherwise be restricted to you, including popular streaming services such as Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, HBO, HotStar, and many, many more.

You Can Save Money With A VPN

Here’s where VPN use gets a bit more niche. Protecting privacy and accessing blocked content are both quite popular, but did you know that you can also save money on flights and hotels with a VPN? It’s all in the geographic location!

Airlines use dynamic pricing, which means they increase and decrease airfares depending upon the country you are visiting from, said Rameez Usmani, Digital Marketing Executive at PureVPN, in an interview with Tech.co. With a VPN, you can find cheap flights by changing your current location to a virtual server in another country.

How cool is that? VPNMentor even did a comparison between flights found through a USA server and an Indian server, and the prices are clearly different, as you’ll see below. Granted, the difference isn’t substantial, but when it comes to traveling, saving every bit of money counts.

An even better way to save money with a VPN is to utilize a free one. Unlike many other similar services, the VPN market is filled with completely free options that can give you the basic protections and features of many of the paid models. However, as is typically the case with free services, there’s a catch.

Does Cyberghost Keep Logs

On the homepage, CyberGhost claims to be a no logs VPN provider with a strict no logs policy.

Here you can see their claims:

But this is not really accurate.

The CyberGhost privacy policy explains how some connection logs are being recorded.

Additionally, when you log in to your account, you can see that the devices you use with CyberGhost are being logged. Heres a screenshot from my test account, showing that two of my devices are being logged:

Based on this information, it is clear that there are some connection logs being maintained. Many VPNs maintain some basic data to enforce the connection policy. CyberGhost, however, goes so far as to log the devices you use and then save this under your account info all while claiming to be no logs.

If you want to see alternatives, there are some good VPNs with no logs that have been verified in real life.

Will VPNs Slow Your Internet

Using a VPN may affect the speed of your internet connection, but how noticeable this is depends very much on the service you use.

Free VPNs tend to be slower than paid-for services. But, even some paid-for VPNs can make browsing the web and downloading files noticeably slower. This is can happen if there are too many users and not enough servers, though some VPNs are also guilty of throttling bandwidth.

Free VPNs tend to be slower than paid-for services

Other issues that can affect your internet speed include heavy encryption, which can hog your devices CPU, and the physical distance between you and the VPN services servers.

For example, if youre based in the US, you may find your internet is far slower if you choose an international server for your VPN connection. Try picking a US-based one for a speed boost, without unduly sacrificing your privacy.

Can We Run Out Of Them

Why Use A VPN?

When the Internet was first designed, it used version 4 addresses. These are 32 bits, which means that we could have up to 4.2bn addresses. This seemed like enough at the time, but is nowhere near enough in a world where the average U.S. household had 11 connected devices.

We now have version 6 IP addresses, which have 128 bits per address. Unfortunately, version 4 and version 6 cant talk to each other directly, so people are going to need version 4 addresses for a long time.

Re: More Than One VPN Client At Same Location

Thank you;;! I could definitely try that. I was just wondering if that is something others have ever experienced. I remember running into that over 15 years ago through an ASA and AnyConnect only allowing one connection at a time from a VPN client and we could change that setting/value. I can’t remember the details. But I guess our workforce has been working in the office most of the time in the last 4 years since we became Meraki customers and this is a “new” one right now.;

If anyone else has any input or suggestions, please let me know or share this here. I will try to revert to stable firmware this coming weekend.

Cyberghost Is Slow To Establish VPN Connections

Another problem that I had when testing CyberGhost is that it could be really slow to establish connections. This wasnt always the case, but in many instances, it could take several seconds to connect to a VPN server.

Normally, the WireGuard VPN protocol would solve this problem, since WireGuard has been designed to quickly establish connections . And we have even noted this in testing out other VPNs with WireGuard, including NordVPN and Surfshark.

With CyberGhost, however, we found that it was very slow to establish connections, regardless of which VPN protocol we were using. Youd see a Connecting notification that would continue for several seconds:

The problems with CyberGhost not connecting seemed to occur randomly.;Changing the VPN protocols did not seem to make much difference. Im not sure exactly what was causing these issues, and support was not able to help much, either.

Bitdefender VPN Features Overview

The Premium VPN rates look great compared to many other VPNs, but dont forget youre paying that price on top of whatever you paid for Bitdefender itself. For example, if you got the VPN through Total Security for five devices, add $3.75 every month.

Once you do that, the cost falls into line with most other VPN services. If you get Bitdefender only on one device, this is actually one of the most cost-effective VPNs, but that solution is available only for Windows users.

The payment methods are pretty limited. It supports only credit cards, PayPal and bank transfers internationally no cryptocurrency . In the U.S., you can also send a check or pay cash at a 7-Eleven or Ace Hardware location, though the website is extremely light on the details of how. Frankly, wed rather have bitcoin as an option.

How Does VPN Work

Learning the rules of sport prepare you for life and make ...

Let’s start with the basic idea of internet communication. Suppose you’re at your desk and you want to access a website like ZDNet. To do this, your computer initiates a request by sending some packets. If you’re in an office, those packets often travel through switches and routers on your LAN before they are transferred to the public internet through a router.

Once on the public internet, those packets travel through a bunch of computers. A separate request is made to a series of name servers to translate the DNS name ZDNet.com to an IP address. That information is sent back to your browser, which then sends the request again through many computers on the public internet. Eventually, it reaches the ZDNet infrastructure, which also routes those packets, grabs a web page , and sends all that back to you.

Each internet request usually results in a whole series of communication events between multiple points. The way a VPN works is by encrypting those packets at the originating point, often hiding the data and the information about your originating IP address. The VPN software on your end then sends those packets to the VPN server at some destination point, decrypting that information.

One of the most important issues in understanding the limits of VPNs is understanding where the endpoint of the VPN server resides. We’ll talk about that next.

Why Do I Need A VPN For Multiple Devices

VPNs arent just for desktop computers – theyre useful for all your devices from your Smart TV to your smartphone. VPNs offer a range of features including:

  • Security – VPNs keep you safe from hackers through encryption and malware blockers
  • Privacy – VPNs enable you to hide your online activity from your ISP, and they can change your IP address so any website youre visiting wont be able to see your true location
  • Unlocking content – most of the big streaming services have different content libraries in different regions, and theyre usually geo-restricted which means you cant access them from other countries. With a VPN, you can completely bypass this by connecting to a server in the country, where the site you want to visit is based.

Aside from these features, you might also want to share a VPN subscription with family, friends, or work colleagues. The more simultaneous connections your VPN offers the more people can use it – its like having a VPN family plan.

VPN How Much Should You Pay For A VPN

You’ll find both expensive and cheap VPN services on the market, and price isn’t always a good indicator of quality.

Just like many digital subscription services, signing up for a single month can work out way more expensive in the long run than committing for a year or two. However, a cheap monthly VPN can be really useful for testing out a service, and then you can subscribe for longer once you know it’s right for you or seek out a VPN free trial.

When paying monthly, you shouldn’t be paying more than about $12.99 a month at that price you can get a plan with just about any good VPN, including our top picks ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark.

When signing up for a year, two years, or even more, prices start at around $6-7 and can drop to as low as $2. Be aware that there are usually tons of VPN deals, and as we enter November, VPN Black Friday deals are also cropping up.;

At the high end of that, you’ll get the very best premium services like ExpressVPN. As it’s the best on the market, we certainly think $6.67 a month is a fair price for ExpressVPN, and that price also includes three months free, so you’re getting 15 months of cover rather than 12.

Well-established providers like NordVPN and IPVanish occupy the mid-range, with prices between $3 and $5.;

Configuring This On A Single VPN Client Computer

What is a VPN? – Gary explains

As mentioned earlier, if you have the OpenVPN Connect Client already installed, and it is configured with basic mode either on or off, then this doesn’t change when you make a configuration change on the Access Server itself. It doesn’t automatically get this setting pushed by the Access Server. Configuration changes for this particular setting don’t take effect until you download a new copy of the Connect Client and install it. However, you can make this configuration change on a single computer via the command line.

For Windows:

  • Open cmd.exe with administrative privileges.
  • Run the following 2 commands: ” part):
  • cd “C:\Program Files \OpenVPN Technologies\OpenVPN Client\core”
  • capicli -k basic_client -v false SetPreference
  • Restart the Windows computer.
  • Open ‘terminal’ program on your Mac.
  • Run the following 2 commands:
  • cd “/Library/Frameworks/OpenVPN.framework/Versions/Current/bin”

    Servers And Server Locations

Mullvad VPN, and, by extension, Mozilla VPN, has VPN servers in 37 countries. That’s below the average among services we’ve examined, and the list of locations isn’t as varied as we’d like to see. For example, there’s only one server location for all of South America and none for the entirety of Africa. If you plan on using a VPN in those chunks of the globe, you’ll have to connect to a very distant server, which can potentially degrade the quality of your connection. Mozilla VPN has servers in Hong Kong, but not other countries with repressive internet policies such as Russia, Turkey, and Vietnam. ExpressVPN does a far better job covering the globe with its server fleet.

The Mozilla VPN product site refers you to Mullvad’s list of servers, which is actually an excellent decision. This interactive list shows every server, where it’s located, whether it’s owned or leased, and much more. It’s a simple act of transparency that other VPN companies should emulate.

Mozilla VPN currently offers 400 servers, which is far fewer than most competitors. It’s even fewer servers than Mullvad VPN, which boasts 764 total, and far fewer than the 7,000-odd servers from CyberGhost. That said, a large fleet of servers does not necessarily ensure good performance. If we had to guess, we’d say that Mozilla’s modest offering has a lot more to do with being a relative newcomer, with fewer subscribers.

What Can A VPN Help Individual Users To Do

While the majority of VPN technology is used by businesses, individuals have been utilizing them for a wide range of other reasons too. In fact, VPNs are rising in popularity with personal users deploying them for all sorts of unique and helpful purposes, including:

    Logging Policy And Privacy

When looking for the best VPN service, one of the most important things you need to look out for is the privacy and logging policy of the service. You should avoid virtual private networks that log data, as this would leave your digital footprints online. If the VPN logs data, it would tie you to your online activities and this would make it easy to identify you.

A zero-log policy means that the company will not collect, store, or share any of your data and personal information while surfing the web. This feature will protect your privacy and keep you hidden from prying eyes. Some services collect data from users and claim to delete them every 24 hours or at the end of each session.

It is still difficult to trust such companies, as you cannot tell what they do with your data. You should not settle for such companies. Make sure the tool you choose offers a no-logs policy or a zero-logs policy. The service should not even collect your data in the first place. Fortunately, all the VPN services on our list offer a no-logs policy.
