Does Avast VPN Allow Torrenting

Avast Secureline Works In China

Best VPN for uTorrent â VPN For Torrenting Tutorial

Our remote-access server in Shanghai, China routinely tests if a VPN can beat restrictions and access a free, open internet. Obfuscation technologies and nearby servers are also a contributing factor.

This rating does not directly contribute to the Overall Rating, but instead makes up a portion of the Security& Features rating.

Avast SecureLine is currently working to get around the Great Firewall of China. This is great, but we can’t be certain how long this success will last. As it stands, Avast is a good anti-censorship VPN.

Does Avast work in China? Yes it does.

Considering Avast SecureLine has no anti-censorship tools to speak of, we were surprised to learn that it gets around the Great Firewall of China.

This isnt speculation: we tested it from our own servers in Shanghai. Using Avasts auto-connect option we established a secure connection to South Korea, fooling the Firewall.

How long this success will last in the absence of obfuscation is not clear. Also, if Avast becomes better-known as an anti-censorship VPN, it can alert the authorities and initiate a harsher crackdown.

The Avast website and all of its products are blocked in China. Because of that, youll have to download the VPN before going into the country, or while using another VPN that works within the country.

Avast will also work against censorship in countries like Russia and Turkey, which have less robust crackdown methods than China.

Simultaneous Device Connections Connect Up To 10 Devices At Once

Avast SecureLine VPN offers different subscription levels depending on how many devices you want to connect. The lowest price plan only allows for one connection. However, you can pay extra to expand this allowance to up to 10 devices, which should be sufficient for most people. That said, If you want to get maximum value for your money and connect more than 10 devices simultaneously, Ill recommend IPVanish. IPVanish allows you to connect unlimited devices simultaneously, even with the most basic plan.

Should You Ever Choose A Category #2 VPN For Torrenting

Possibly. Look, odds are that there wont be an issue. But why risk it? True zero-log VPNs are the same price than comparable Category #2 VPNs. So why not choose one that offers real privacy?

If you really like the features/price of a category #2 VPN and they do allow torrents, its ok to try their service for a month or two and see if you like it. Id recommend only choosing VPNs with a torrent-friendliness rating of 7 or higher though

Avast Caught Selling User Data Collected Through Their Antivirus Products

Is Avast VPN Good For Torrenting in 2019? Let

In 2019, privacy experts discovered that Avast was harvesting user data through their antivirus products, then selling that data to third parties. According to the company,

The data is fully de-identified and aggregated and cannot be used to personally identify or target you.

The data that was collected did not include the users name, email address, or IP address. While we really dont like the idea of anyone selling user data like this, it doesnt sound like the data can be used to personally identify anyone.

That is, until you learn that every data record also includes a unique device ID, which persists until the user uninstalls the Avast antivirus from that device. The data that was being collected was extremely detailed, right down to every click the user made, and the exact millisecond that they clicked.

With that level of detail, it wouldnt be too hard to attach a persons identity to a device ID. For example, imagine that you have a website that offers a free newsletter. Imagine also that you are a buyer of Avasts data. You know that I, Heinrich Long, signed up for your newsletter on September 11, 2019, at 9:32:01.

Next, you go look at your Avast data, and see that exactly one person, using a computer with device ID 123abc, clicked the signup button for your newsletter on September 11, 2019, at 9:32:01.

While we do not know who bought this kind of data from Avast, they have reportedly stopped collecting user data in this way.

    Money-back guarantee: 30 DAYS

StrongVPN recently underwent a full overhaul and now features much-needed improvements to its apps and server network. The company boasts a zero logs policy for both web traffic contents and connection metadata. A subscription nets you unlimited bandwidth on up to five simultaneously connected devices.

All connections are securely encrypted, and you can even opt to obfuscate traffic using a special Scramble feature that disguises OpenVPN connections. DNS leak protection and a kill switch are built into the apps. StrongVPN has long been a favorite among users in China, and its recent upgrades make it appeal to a wider audience including torrenters.

Apps are available for Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android.

    Security Is Avast VPN Safe

Avast SecureLine is safe to use since it offers OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols. Still, the provider should add more tunneling protocols in its arsenal like L2TP/IPsec, SSTP, and WireGuard.

Fortunately, the OpenVPN protocol applies 256-bit military-grade encryption automatically to secure your online communications.

Security Is Avast Secureline VPN Safe

Avast SecureLine VPN protects your privacy with bank-grade encryption and DNS/IPv6 leak protection.

The app also has an automatic kill switch that is turned on by default. You can easily turn it on in the apps Network Security settings menu.

One of the most important things that a VPN does to keep you safe is mask your IP address. Your VPN should be able to hide your real IP address from the websites you visit.

I put the VPN through several different leak tests to find out if my DNS, IPv4, or IPv6 addresses were being leaked to the websites I visited.

I did not detect any DNS or IP leaks during my tests.

When I connected to a VPN server in the UK, this is how my IP and DNS address looked to the websites I visited:

Avast SecureLine VPN didnt leak my IP address or DNS requests

As you can see, my real location in the US was hidden. The VPNs IPv6 leak protection also was functional.

To the websites I visited, it looked like I was located in the UK. That means that Avast SecureLine VPN was doing its job correctly.

    Avast Logs Too Much Data

The Best VPN For Torrenting: Download Torrents Safely & Anonymously

    Logging Policy & Jurisdiction

We dissect the logging and privacy policies of every VPN. A VPN should never log:

    • Your real IP address
    • DNS requests

A base of operations outside of 14-Eyes or EU jurisdiction is preferable.

Avast SecureLine logs more data than is acceptable. The company also has a history of sharing user information. Thankfully it doesn’t record any sensitive details, like your IP address or browsing history. But it does retain information about connection timestamps and the amount of data transferred for up to 35 days.

Avasts VPN privacy policy is clearly written and transparent, but it logs more data than were comfortable with.

    Avast freely admits that:

Generally speaking, we need some personal data particularly to provide you our products and services, optimize and improve our products and services, to send you direct marketing, or to comply with our legal obligations.

We were pleased to see that Avast doesnt store your original IP address, DNS queries, or browsing history. This is the most sensitive information that no VPN should keep.

    But it does collect:

    • Email, app version, internal identifier.
    • Subscription activation code and renewal date.

Your connection data is stored on Avasts servers for 35 days , and any client data is stored for up to two years. Theres no real justification for this practice.

This is an intrusive logging policy.

    No Logs Policy Security Features

Avast VPN has a zero-logging policy that prevents it from gathering and storing the information of its subscribers. Sadly, no third-party has ever audited the service, meaning theres no real way to tell if it truly keeps the private data of its users safeguarded.

The network of Avast VPN consists of only 55 servers. Among those, only a small handful are P2P enabled. In addition, none of the VPN providers locations are RAM-based. Hence, every server thats in operation can still keep logs. As such, you may never be sure if youre safe.

An automatic kill switch is the only special feature that Avast VPN has. Unlike its competitors, the service doesnt have a built-in malware blocker. On top of that, none of its apps have split tunneling or any other unique offering thatll make them stand out and keep you protected.

Sad to say, Avast VPN doesnt work in China or any other country where the internet is highly restricted. Because of that, you might want to opt for another more capable VPN if you travel frequently. Having Avast VPN shall certainly only leave you disappointed.

    Putting It All Together

Avast VPN should not be used for torrenting purposes. Besides having a rather small array of P2P servers, it also doesnt pass my leak tests. In addition, the VPN lacks essential VPN security features apart from an automatic kill switch.

The compatibility of Avast VPN is also inferior. Although it has applications for the most common operating systems, theres no way to use it alongside Chromebook OS and Linux. It even does not have router support, which is standard for VPNs nowadays.

While its very affordable, I simply think that Avast VPN isnt worth it. Youll be better off with another more expensive service that has much more to offer. If you currently dont have the budget, dont take the risk and save until youve got enough to purchase another provider.

    Speed Test Results: Mediocre Performance

For this Avast VPN review, I ran speed tests on a handful of different servers in the US, Canada, and Europe. All tests were done using the Windows client and the OpenVPN protocol and AES-256 encryption on a 100 Mbps connection.

First I tested the Optimal location server, which happened to be in Seattle: 76 Mbps.

Not too bad, but also not amazing.

Next up was a server in Los Angeles: 90 Mbps.

Then I tested a New York server. The speeds were not very good at 45 Mbps.

Next up was a server in Montreal, Canada. Download speeds were 55 Mbps, again not great.

While these arent horrible speeds, Avast SecureLine is not what Id consider to be the best VPN for Canada.

Lastly, I tested a server in the UK.

Again, not great, but also not horrible.

The Avast SecureLine speed test results were about average, not good enough to be in the Pro category, but also not bad enough to be a Con. It is not the fastest VPN we have tested, but also not the slowest.

Does Avast VPN Keep Any Logs

Is Avast VPN Good For Torrenting in 2019? Let

As Avast states on their website and here, the VPN service does not keep any logs about the websites you visit, the apps you are using , what data is transferred, and which IP addresses are accessed.

Because Avast is a European company , they have to comply with the strict requirements of GDPR which promotes transparency and full disclosure of what logs are kept etc.

Because of the strict requirements and fines imposed by GDPR, personally I believe Avast that when they say they do not keep any log activity about the apps you are using or websites you visit etcthey are certainly not lying about this.

Torrents Allowed But Metadata Logs Kept

The bulk of VPN companies fall into this category. They want the extra business from torrent/p2p users, but the cant provide all the critical privacy features torrent users want/need. This is not to say that you should never choose a VPN from this category if they have other features that are important to you. Just be aware that your connection history will never be truly anonymous if the VPN keeps any connection logs.

Important Note: Many VPNs in this category love to advertise their service as non-logging or no activity logs kept but these are deceptive terms. In reality, most of the VPNs in this category still keep metadata logs known as connection logs which in many cases can still be used to identify individual users.

This is the critical distinction between a group #2 VPN and a true non-logging vpn. A real non-logging vpn keeps no session or connection metadata whatsoever, and cannot identify a user based on their historical IP addresses even if they wanted to.

Some VPNs are more transparent than others when disclosing the true nature of their logging. For example, IBVPN is extremely upfront about what types of logs they do/dont keep :

Not every VPN provider is this open, many choose to hide behind the distinction between Activity logs and Connection Logs which all category 2 VPNs keep.

Red flags that youre dealing with a category #2 VPN:

  • They advertise No Logs of VPN Activity or No Traffic Logs or a similar statement without greater detail.

Best VPN Countries For Torrenting And P2p Traffic

Some countries have looser laws concerning Internet downloads. Naturally, those will be the countries that are great for torrenting.

    Switzerland

In general, Switzerland is one of the most privacy-friendly locations. Your right to privacy is protected, limiting what your Internet Service Provider can monitor about you. Moreover, downloading copyrighted materials for personal use is legal as long as you don’t intend to sell them. However, it is illegal to share content if you don’t own copyright rights. So, as long as you’re downloading, you’re in the clear, but seeding is another thing.

    Spain

Spain is a torrenter’s safe heaven because their law emphasizes the intent to profit over breaching copyright laws. There, you can share any data that you want as long as you don’t intend to make a profit. This means that torrenting for your own use is perfectly fine. Like in Switzerland, it’s still illegal to share copyrighted materials, so if you’re uploading, you’re committing a crime.

    Poland

In Poland, downloading copyrighted materials is neither legal nor illegal. Generally, without permission, you cannot use copyrighted works. However, there are some exceptions, like private use cases, which fall outside of copyright law. You can write this off as a loophole in their judicial system, but it doesn’t make Poland a new Tortuga for digital pirates.
