Mcafee : Performance And System Impact

To measure McAfee Total Protection’s impact on system performance, we used our custom benchmark test, which clocks how long it takes to match 20,000 names and addresses on a spreadsheet. Our testbed was a Lenovo ThinkPad T470 with a 2.5-GHz Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 250GB of solid-state storage containing 63GB of files.

Prior to McAfee’s installation, our test took an average of 10.1 seconds to finish, which we used as our baseline. After we loaded McAfee Total Protection, that completion time rose to 11.0 seconds, an acceptable background performance decline of 8.9%. Bitdefender Total Security had twice the background impact.

However, the benchmark completion time rose to 19.8 seconds during a McAfee full scan and 14.0 seconds during a quick scan. The former is among the biggest performance penalties we’ve seen caused by antivirus software, representing a decline of 96% from the baseline and 80% from the post-installation score.

To put it another way, the CPU performed about half as fast during a McAfee full scan as before McAfee was installed. By comparison, Bitdefender’s full scan slowed the system by about a third, and Kaspersky’s by only about a quarter.

McAfee’s quick scan was still heavy, but not abnormally so, with performance hits of 39% from the baseline and 27% from the background impact.

Mcafee Total Protection Review: Whats It Like To Use

In the past, some McAfee products were burdened with a sluggish, overcomplicated front-end; thankfully, thats now been completely overhauled. The current release of Total Protection is nicely responsive and neatly organised, with tabs along the top and sensibly labelled controls in the main pane.

Its also one of the nimblest security suites around. In a range of different usage scenarios, AV-Comparatives.org and AV-Test.org reported it slowed down their test PCs by an average of 6.3%. Thats an excellent score; of the packages weve reviewed, only F-Secure SAFE did better, nosing ahead with 6.1%. Windows Defender meanwhile weighed in at a ponderous 12.5%.

Scanning is quite quick, too. McAfee Total Protection fully scanned an external hard disk containing 55GB of assorted data in well under two minutes. Again, it didnt quite keep up with F-Secure SAFE, which whizzed through the test in 27 seconds, but many other suites took longer and Windows own scanner left us waiting around nearly ten minutes.

Despite being convenient with its 24/7 availability, McAfee Safe Connects customer support is really poor.

McAfee shares one knowledge base for its entire suite of products, but of 360 total articles, only eight of them mention Safe Connect.

Like with the rest of Safe Connect, it proves here again to be the neglected child of McAfee.

Safe Connect does have a phone number that you can contact, but we were told on two separate occasions that we would be called back and these calls never came.

Frustratingly, the live chat disconnects multiple times during a conversation. It will reconnect, most of the time, but we completely lost contact a few times.

McAfee Safe Connect shares a support infrastructure with the broader McAfee product line and its clear the agents have not been adequately trained to deal with the VPN product.

The support agents were unable to answer routine questions, like whether Safe Connect could be used to bypass geo-restricted content and how many total VPN servers there are.

On top of this, Safe Connect seems stifled by the legacy baggage of McAfee. For example, you are forced to provide your full name, email address, and phone number before initiating a live chat.

For a product that exists to protect your personal information, the requirement to provide information that can be used to personally identify you is self-defeating.

McAfee Total Protection keeps an active watch over your system and blocks viruses and other malicious items on access. It monitors web content, too, and the free browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Internet Explorer will steer you away from dodgy websites.
