IP address protection with NordVPN

Before we talk about that let me correct one assertion that a VPN is a “glorified proxy”. It is not! A proxy accepts connections on behalf of clients then it creates connections to the ultimate destination, relaying the traffic as a middleman. A VPN on the other hand tunnels the traffic. The distinction is important because where a connection your client is initiating terminates is very important because your session security protocols such as TLS establish trust between a client and the termination server of a client-server connection. So for example, if you trust your local country’s certificate authority or your corporate network’s PKI , assuming a proxy is configured in the middle will show the connection is secure proxies generally speaking require explicit configuration, but transparent proxies exist).

A VPN is not a glorified proxy because when you assess the risk of using proxy compared to a VPN tunnel, with a VPN you can compensate for the risk introduced by the middle-box server by using the aforementioned connection security protocols such as TLS.

If we agree that VPN is not just a glorified proxy, then let’s talk about why you should Always use a VPN tunnel.

When discussing a security solution one should always consider what information they are securing against being compromised using what means and from whom . So how can I say one should Always use a VPN tunnel when I don’t know any of these answers at any level of specificity for all users?

Does The Provider Offer Mobile VPN

You might understand that you need the privacy protection of a VPN when youre accessing the web through your laptop or desktop. But many of us spend a lot of time visiting websites, watching videos, and playing online games through our mobile devices. Because of this, its important to rely on VPN services when using your mobile devices, too.

Fortunately, most major VPN providers especially those that charge a fee offer mobile services, too. All of the companies in our list, for example, do this. Finding a VPN service that can protect your phone and tablet, then, shouldnt be a challenge.

How Does VPN Work

Let’s start with the basic idea of internet communication. Suppose you’re at your desk and you want to access a website like ZDNet. To do this, your computer initiates a request by sending some packets. If you’re in an office, those packets often travel through switches and routers on your LAN before they are transferred to the public internet through a router.

Once on the public internet, those packets travel through a bunch of computers. A separate request is made to a series of name servers to translate the DNS name ZDNet.com to an IP address. That information is sent back to your browser, which then sends the request again through many computers on the public internet. Eventually, it reaches the ZDNet infrastructure, which also routes those packets, grabs a web page , and sends all that back to you.

Each internet request usually results in a whole series of communication events between multiple points. The way a VPN works is by encrypting those packets at the originating point, often hiding the data and the information about your originating IP address. The VPN software on your end then sends those packets to the VPN server at some destination point, decrypting that information.

One of the most important issues in understanding the limits of VPNs is understanding where the endpoint of the VPN server resides. We’ll talk about that next.

Hide From Prying Eyes

by Leo A. Notenboom

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is one approach to securely connect to a remote resource. Depending on the VPN, that privacy can extend from one end of the connection to the other, or it can protect you only for a certain portion.

Ill describe the different scenarios, and how you are and perhaps are not protected by a VPN.

VPNs encrypt and protect your connection throughout the entire path between your computer and the VPN providers server. Other forms of encrypted communication leave traces of your activity or dont cover the entire distance. The WPA encryption used in Wi-Fi encrypts data only between your computer and the local access point. HTTPS connections encrypt data between your computer and the service to which you are connecting your ISP can still see the service youre connecting to. HTTPS over a VPN provides the most completely effective security.

Does The VPN Work On Mobile

Why Is VPN Important?

Most VPN services today come with a mobile option, but youll want to verify this before you sign up for a subscription.

More people than ever are accessing the internet on mobile devices, so you need to make sure you can protect yourself while youre using them.

This is especially important if youre looking to protect yourself when using public WiFi networks. Youll most likely be using your phone or tablet when youre on these networks. Make sure the service you get will work on these devices.

Why Hide Your Browsing History From Isps

The answer is simple: ISPs can do all kinds of shady stuff to our data. They can use it to target us with ads, sell it to third parties, or turn it over to the government.1 Whats worse is that, because ISPs can store our online activity, hackers can breach their databases to obtain the data of millions of users. These kinds of attacks have happened before. While ISPs are doing what they can to prevent future breaches, theres no guarantee that they wont happen again.

Does A VPN Hide Your Data Usage

Contrary to popular belief, VPNs dont actually do that. They only hide what web services you use. Thats what stops your ISP from selectively throttling your speeds.

For example, with a VPN, they wont know youre binging Netflix. So they wont be able to slow down your Netflix speeds.

However, theyll still know how much data you use. Theyll just see that youre sending it to and receiving it from the VPN server, like so:

What Is An Ip Address

You might notice that most of the things VPNs hide are connected to your IP address. So what is an IP address, really? Basically, its a unique series of numbers assigned to your device when you connect to the internet. The internet is like a virtual world where the World Wide Web is the country, your ISP is the state, your local network is the city, and your IP address is your street address. Everything you do online can be traced back to your IP address, and hackers can use your IP address to intercept data or send you malware. That is why hiding your IP address, one of the main tasks of a VPN, is so important.

Does a VPN Change Your IP Address? ð¤

By letting you change your IP address to one in another country, a VPN can let you access content thats not available where you are. Many people use a VPN to get around geoblocks when something is available only to IP addresses in certain parts of the world.

Due to licensing agreements, streaming platforms often have location-based content restrictions on the movies and TV shows you can access online. Similarly, many multiplayer games group players into region-based servers. If your preferred server is in Europe, and youre abroad in the US, you might not be able to connect.

Is Private Browsing And VPN Really Secure

Whether you run a business or go online for yourself, you probably know that browsing the web can open you and your organization up to all sorts of risks.

So, when it comes to protecting yourself and your business online, you may have looked into private browsing or choosing a VPN. But which of these is right for you?

What Is A VPN And How Does It Work

When you switch it on, a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between you and a remote server operated by a VPN service. All your internet traffic is routed through this tunnel, so your data is secure from prying eyes along the way. Because your traffic is exiting the VPN server, your true IP address is hidden, masking your identity and location.

To understand the value of a VPN, it helps to think of some specific scenarios in which a VPN might be used. Consider the public Wi-Fi network, perhaps at a coffee shop or airport. Normally, you might connect without a second thought. But do you know who might be watching the traffic on that network? Can you even be sure the Wi-Fi network is legit, or might it be operated by some nefarious individual?

If you connect to that same public Wi-Fi network using a VPN, you can rest assured that no one on that network will be able to see what you’re up tonot other users snooping around for would-be victims, nor even the operators of the network itself. This last point is particularly important, and everyone should keep in mind that it’s difficult to tell whether a Wi-Fi network is what it appears to be. Just because it’s Starbucks_WiFi doesn’t mean it’s really owned by a well-known coffee purveyor.

What Happens If A VPN Connection Fails While I’m On A Remote Connection

A lot depends on what VPN you’re using, how it’s set up, and where you’re connecting. That said, let’s look at the most likely scenario.

Recall that when you’re online and connected to an internet application through a VPN, a few things are happening: Your data from your computer to the VPN service is encrypted by the VPN. Your data from the VPN service to the internet application may or may not be encrypted via https, but the VPN service does not encrypt it. And your IP address is spoofed. The online application sees the IP address of the VPN service, not of your laptop.

When a VPN connection drops, you might just lose your connection. But because the internet is very good at routing around failures, what is more likely to happen is your computer will reconnect to the internet application, simply bypassing the VPN service. That means that — on failure — your local IP address may “leak out” and be logged by the internet application, and your data may be open to local Wi-Fi hackers at your hotel or wherever you’re doing your computing.

There is a reasonably robust solution to that problem, and that’s next.

When Should I Use A VPN

When to use a VPN really depends on what you want it for. For example, 39% of users understand public Wi-Fi is unsafe but still do sensitive things, like banking or shopping on public WiFi, so using a VPN when youre at the airport, or a café is a great use case.

As I mentioned before, a lot of people use a VPN for privacy reasons, like stopping advertisers from tracking them. Searches you perform, or websites you visit wont be trackable, which means youll be able to surprise your spouse with a vacation you researched and planned on a computer you both use. Targeted ads could spoil things if your spouse is bombarded with ads for plane tickets and hotels while they browse.

However, we do understand people want online privacy and anonymity, not just when browsing the internet, but also when uploading and downloading files.

To make sure nobody knows what you are downloading or uploading you can use a VPN. Because of the encrypted traffic and the rerouted IP address you can with a VPN.

Your Streaming And Gaming Activities

VPN myth #1: Does a VPN protect you from hackers? ð¥ FIND OUT

Streaming and gaming are notorious for their massive data consumption. Thats your ISPs nightmare since data-heavy activities strain its network. ISPs tend to throttle bandwidth during data-heavy activities and especially during peak hours.

When you hide your streaming activities with a VPN, you get to enjoy countless streaming hours. Once the VPN hides your IP address, your ISP cant track or see what youre up to online and cant throttle your bandwidth! That way, you can challenge your friends to play online games whenever you want.

Is A VPN Really That Secure

Its important to remember that VPNs do not work in the same way as comprehensive anti-virus software. While they will protect your IP and encrypt your internet history, but that is as much as they can do. They wont keep you safe, for instance, if you visit phishing websites or download compromised files.

When you use a VPN, you are still at risk of:

  • Trojans
  • Spyware
  • Viruses

If any of these were to make it onto your system, they would be able to damage the device regardless of whether you were running a VPN. Therefore, it is essential to use a VPN in tandem with comprehensive anti-virus software to guarantee maximum security.

Myth #: When My VPN Providers Privacy Policy Says They Dont Log That Means I Am Anonymous

When a VPN provider simply says they perform âno loggingâ it does not guarantee online anonymity or privacy. Any systems or network engineer will confirm that some minimal logging is required to properly maintain and optimize systems or the network. In fact, any provider claiming âno loggingâ should cause you to immediately question what is happening with your private data. If a VPN provider kept absolutely no logs, they wouldnât be able to:

  • Offer plans with limits on GB usage or per user basis
  • Limit VPN connections to 1, 3 or 5 on a per user basis
  • Troubleshoot your connection or offer support for server-side problems
  • Handle your DNS requests when using the VPN service. They might rely on a 3rd Party DNS provider that logs DNS requests
  • Prevent abuse, such as spammers, port scanners and DDOS to protect their VPN service and their users

The logging issue is more complicated than placing a single line in your privacy policy stating âwe donât logâ and then advertising your service as âanonymous.â There have been too many instances where user data was turned over by âno logâ VPN providers, yet they continue to promise an anonymous service. For example, a âno-loggingâ VPN provider recently admitted that it used a packet sniffing software to monitor customer traffic to prevent abuse. VPN users should demand more transparency from their VPN providers.

Will Gaming On A VPN Get You Early Access To Games And Dlc

In some cases, gaming with a VPN can get you early access to games and DLC that arent yet available in your area. For example, if a game is released in the US but not yet in Europe, you can set your server location to the US, purchase the game, and play before anyone else can. This applies to DLC content as well, in some cases.

So What Can A VPN Do For You

What is VPN and how does it protect you online?

Still following? Great. Weve covered the basics of how a VPN works. Now, lets take a look at what all that technical mumbo jumbo means for you!

  • A VPN protects you on public Wi-Fi
  • Free public Wi-Fi may be handy if youre on the go. Sadly, it is really unsafe and makes you vulnerable even to basic cyber attacks. A VPN encrypts your online data and helps secure your personal information when you use Wi-Fi in airports, coffee shops, or other public places. Its useful for hiding your web activity when you want to access sensitive information in public like online banking, emails, or crypto assets.

  • A VPN masks browsing and torrent history
  • Masking your IP address is essential to secure online privacy. A Virtual Private Network ensures that your location, browsing habits, and torrenting history arent directly linked to your identity. This way, you can surf with peace of mind without any third parties trying to steer your choices.

  • A VPN unlocks blocked and censored websites
  • Access to various websites is restricted in many countries due to geo-blocking and censorship. You can unblock sites by connecting to a VPN server based in a different country. This allows you to bypass internet censorship and various geo-restrictions for content, social media, whistleblowing, or even research purposes.

  • A VPN helps stream Netflix privately
  • Disclaimer: Surfshark does not encourage using a VPN in any way that would potentially violate the Terms of Service of streaming service providers.
