Mac Addresses Can Be Used To Identify Your Device
Whenever you connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot, your phone gives away its MAC address. Such addresses are included in each network interface, making it possible to identify you as a repeat guest, even across separate networks.
Starting with iOS 8, Apple devices have begun broadcasting a fake, randomized MAC address that makes the practice of tracing users more difficult. This, however, still identifies your device as an , and the practice is only applied when looking for new networks. When you connect to your known network your real MAC address is broadcasted.
The operating system TAILS randomizes MAC addresses by default. Software like this makes it possible to connect to several Wi-Fi hotspots repeatedly without being tracked.
MAC addresses can also be used to increase the security of your home or office Wi-Fi. You start by identifying the devices that you permit on your network by their MAC address and then white list those devices, essentially blocking all unknown devices from your network.
Another method of ensuring privacy is to change the name of your phone by opening the settings menu. Thats because your device will likely transmit its name to the Wi-Fi access point its connected to. By default, this is often either a description of the phone, the name you entered when you set the phone up, or a combination of the two, such as Patricias iPhone.
Using VPN On Cellular Data : Good Option Or A Bad One
Before starting any discuss regarding VPN on cellular data, we would like to talk generally about some relevant details.
Lots of people use Virtual Private Networks on internet connection installed in their homes, offices, Outdoor coffee shops, and many other places. There are some other places where you cannot find any Wireless Wi-Fi source, then
How will you connectyour VPN?
Would you turn oncellular data for that?
Will using cellulardata for your Private network would be a good thing to do?
Well yes, these are the kind of questions that are without any doubt juggling around in your mind because they are the most basic ones. To get a hold of answers to such questions, I tried reading, researchingand practically using Cellular data for my VPN. Let me tell you all the things in the easiest manner that make sense.
With that through, lets start with the explanation, shall we?
Choose VPN Protocols That Use The Least Data: Mobile
Lets start with the VPNs internet protocols on mobile, which means the ways in which it transmits data across a network:

Automatically Connecting To A Network Can Be Dangerous
If your Wi-Fi is set to connect automatically, then youre forcing your phone to constantly monitor radio waves to find those networks it has connected to before and make a fresh connection. But the mechanism your phone uses to identify these networks is the networks name, and that can easily be spoofed.
There is no guarantee that a Wi-Fi network called Starbucks is actually operated by Starbucks. In fact, anyone can easily set up a malicious network of that name, making it so that all devices that usually connect to Starbucks Wi-Fi will automatically connect when within range.
Once connected, the device reveals its name to the router, and some of the services you use might automatically activate. If unencrypted, this information can be read by the operator of the Wi-Fi network and others around you.
We recommend you keep your Wi-Fi setting off and only connect when youre actively looking for one.
A Quick Networking Background

Youve probably heard the word NAT thrown around. It stands for Network Address Translator. For a typical at-home setup, your router plays this translator role. Its main job as a translator is to take requests to its public IP address , and forward them along to local IP addresses that it automatically assigns to your home devices :
When you open ports or port forward to your Helium miner, you are giving your router instructions to forward requests over port 44158 to a devices private IP :
Your router will also occasionally change the local IP addresses it assigns to individual devices, which can make any port forwarding rules outdated and non-functional. However, it is usually possible to tell your router to never change the assigned IP of a device on your network . Its important to do this when port forwarding, otherwise the forwarding rules you create will not apply to the new IP address that your router gives the device that you meant to port forward to.
Having the ability to tell your router to give devices static IPs on your home network is a luxury we unfortunately dont get when using cellular hotspots. This is due to how mobile carriers set up their own version of your home NAT called a CGNAT.

Protonvpn Review: Premium VPN Or Seriously Overhyped
VPN |
ProtonVPN.com |
ProtonVPN is a smaller VPN service from the makers of ProtonMail, a Switzerland-based email provider.
In this new and updated ProtonVPN review, we put this VPN under a microscope for analysis and also ran lots of performance tests. Specifically, we wanted to see how ProtonVPN compares to the competition in these key areas:
- How fast is ProtonVPN with servers throughout the network?
- Do all the features work correctly?
- Does ProtonVPN have any problems with IP address leaks or DNS leaks?
- How responsive is the ProtonVPN support staff?
- Does ProtonVPN unblock Netflix and other streaming services?
All of these questions are answered in this ProtonVPN review, with screenshots posted below.
Overall ProtonVPN has made some good improvements, but it still lags behind other leading VPNs in a few key areas.
Is Protonvpn Good For Netflix And Streaming
ProtonVPN is OK for Netflix. It supports a few different regions, but doesnt support as many Netflix libraries as other top-name VPNs, such as NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
Lets see what they state on their website about Netflix streaming with ProtonVPN:
ProtonVPN users can securely watch US Netflix when connected to any ProtonVPN Plus server located in the US. These servers are available for Plus and Visionary Plan subscribers. For the fastest and most reliable connection, please connect to the server that is closest to your current location.
I tested US Netflix with a ProtonVPN server in New York and did not have any problems getting through. The speeds were adequate for the short tests that I ran.
Note: ProtonVPN currently supports the following Netflix regions:
- US Netflix
- UK Netflix
- German Netflix

How Do VPNs Work
VPNs work by creating an intermediary, private server between a users device and a public Wi-Fi network. Rather than connecting directly to the public Wi-Fi, the user connects to the VPN, where their data and IP address go through an encrypted tunnel. This hides their web activity from ISPs and hackers alike.
Types Of VPN Security Protocols
VPNs use a variety of different protocols. Older protocols, such as PPP and PPTP, are considered less secure. Here are some of the types of security protocols.

Is Using A VPN Legal
Some people wonder whether its legal to use a VPN. After all, the service enables you to become a lot more anonymous online, which can be quite useful for hackers and online criminals. If those people cant be traced online, its much harder to punish them for their crimes, after all. Even so, this doesnt necessarily mean a VPN is illegal.
On the contrary: many official companies and businesses work with VPNs and recommend their use. The European Union, too, supports internet freedom, which a VPN can give you.
Many countries consider the use of a VPN completely legal. Conducting illegal activities while using a VPN, however, remains illegal. Therefore, using a VPN for legal activities, such as browsing, gaming, Netflix, and YouTube, isnt a problem at all. If you use a VPN to, for example, , however, youre most likely going against your local laws. While the VPN gives you more anonymity online and makes it a lot harder for officials to trace you down, the downloading in and of itself is still illegal.
There are a couple of countries that do consider the use of a VPN illegal. If youd like to know more about these countries and the legal and illegal use of VPNs in general, you can read this article. Using a VPN in most of the world wont get you into any trouble. On the contrary: wed recommend it.

Can A VPN Protect Mobile
No, at least not right away. A VPN in your mobile device establishes a secure tunnel between your phone and the VPN service provider. As the VPN application runs, it encrypts your mobile devices outgoing traffic. But it wont do the same for the devices router facility. Hence, your mobile phones VPN can only protect the phone itself, not the other devices tethered to it.
Lucky for you, theres an easy solution. All you have to do is install your preferred VPN on both the connecting device as well as the device acting as a router.
The best VPN providers offer their services for both mobile devices and desktops. Just be sure your VPN vendor provides a connection to multiple devices with the same subscription.

VPN Connections Not Working On T
Having issues using your favorite VPN application to protect yourself online, T-Mobile US customers? Here’s how to fix it.
I have a long history of advocating for online privacy, and I support that by using a VPN service myself as well as encouraging others to do so. There’s lots of great solutions out there — some of my favorites are PIA , VyprVPN, and Avast SecureLine.
All of these services work extremely well, reliably, and are configurable for use with a variety of servers worldwide. Each one provides desktop and mobile applications for use, and PIA/VyprVPN can be used with your NETGEAR open source router using DD-WRT or Tomato as well. Personally, I use one provider at home directly through my router and DD-WRT, for all of my home connections, and SecureLine when I’m on the go with my mobile phone.

Does Protonvpn Work Well For Gaming
Gamers have unique needs for a VPN. Important factors include a large server network, fast speeds, and servers that do not get blocked. In these areas we find ProtonVPN does not fare well. For example:
- It has a smaller server network than other leading competitors
- Speeds with ProtonVPN are mediocre
- It still gets blocked by most streaming services
Overall, we do not consider ProtonVPN to be the best VPN for gaming. Consider some alternatives.
Do I Need A VPN On My Phone
If you are using your phone on unsecured wifi in places like cafes, hotels, airports, etc. you would benefit from using a VPN. The VPNs are very cheap and they will make it much harder to access your private information which can otherwise be stolen quite easily on these low-secured networks.
Its so easy today to steal personal data and the results can be very frustrating for the victim!
Ive taken a rather extensive course on how hackers work and how they typically manage to get their hands on private data such as passwords and other personal data. Its SURPRISINGLY easy to hack a wifi router in a public space!
So, as always, the answer depends on what youre using your phone for.
I never use my phone without a VPN when Im in an airport, a cafe, a restaurant, etc. I will make sure my VPN is turned on so its impossible to see what Im typing in and which passwords Ive installed on my phone.

Does VPN Work On Cellular Data
The short answer is yes a VPN does work on cellular data in addition to wired or Wi-Fi connections. However, it also takes a portion of your cellular data for its operations. According to tests, the additional consumption might be anywhere from 4% to 20%.
However, VPN data usage is not a simple black and white affair. Several variables govern just how much your cellular data increases:
- The infrastructure of the VPN. The VPN data usage can drastically vary due to the encryption protocols applied. For instance, techniques offering more robust data protection could end up swallowing more cellular data.
- Your activities. The online actions performed impact the data usage as well. For instance, high-quality Netflix streaming will consume much more cellular data naturally, even without a VPN. When you add the VPN, the consumed data will be even higher.
Transparent Company With A Good Track Record
Its no secret that Proton Technologies, including ProtonVPN and ProtonMail, has a good reputation in the privacy community. It is also a company that is transparent and led by reputable, public-facing people.
ProtonMail was started in 2014 by a group of academics/scientists who were working at CERN in Switzerland and also MIT. On the topic of transparency, ProtonMail published an interesting blog post about the organization and leadership:
As noted above, ProtonVPN and ProtonMail both fall under the parent company Proton Technologies AG, based in Geneva, Switzerland. The ProtonVPN arm of this business is officially registered as ProtonVPN AG, which shares the same core leadership as ProtonMail.

Why Does My Phone Show That A VPN Consumes More Data
A VPN encrypts your files during the transfer, which does create some overhead. However, the encryption process adds a negligible amount of data usage – 1-4% max.
If your phone shows that a VPN consumes a lot of data, its likely an error. Your device doesnt understand that the data flowing through the VPN is the same data thats already been accounted for in other apps statistics. Lets take a look at this example.
Lets say youve spent 800MB watching YouTube and 200MB browsing Facebook with VPN Unlimited connected. In reality, youve spent 800MB+200MB=1GB of data. However, your phone will think that youve spent twice as much:
- Youtube: 800MB
- Websites data flowing through VPN Unlimited: 1GB
- Total: 2GB
Dont worry though – your cell provider will still register the real amount of data spent, which is 1GB.
