Lets just get this out of the way: Norton Secure VPN is not a no logs VPN service. Instead, they log quite a bit of data.

I’m going round in circles trying to find out why I keep getting debited for 90+GBP every December, when I no longer use the service and my NORTON account says all subscriptions expired in 2014. Every year I try and sort this out and give up in frustration.

I’m wondering if this could be a Norton 360 received as a package with a new laptop, etc, and therefore not registered on my account? We’ve moved house since the last laptop was bought and I can’t find any Norton disc with product key to help my research, I just have a reference number on my bank statement. I can’t contact the bank at the moment as I’m not in the right country for their dial codes, and getting hold of a human being on online chat is proving difficult .

Nortons mobile protections for Android and iOS are both really good but I wish the company would bundle all of Nortons security tools into a single app.

Note: I successfully ran all of Nortons Android security apps from the Google Play Store on my daughters Chromebook. Norton says it doesnt officially support Chromebook, but Norton is still the best Chromebook antivirus in 2021.

Norton offers these protections for mobile users:

I really like Nortons App Advisor which scans both apps that are about to be downloaded and apps that are already installed. The App Advisor for existing apps lets you know which of your apps have no privacy risks, which apps are installed in the last 30 days, and which apps are using more battery than normal.

I also really like Nortons web protections for mobile, including the VPN with an ad tracking blocker, and the Safe Search browser that filters out harmful websites from search engine results.

The rest of Nortons mobile security tools are really good my only complaint was with the amount of apps I had to download. Norton should include the password manager, LifeLock, and Safe Family app in a single app.

In terms of overall device security, Norton provides some of the best mobile antivirus apps on the market.

Inconsistent And Sometimes Slow Speeds

For this Norton VPN review we ran tests with servers around the world. All tests were conducted on a 500 Mbps connection from the United States.

There was no way to select the city for speed tests, but instead you can only select the country.

First, we tested the US, which should have offered the fastest speeds. The Norton VPN server in the US was geolocated somewhere in New York. It only gave us about 50 Mbps:

Next, I tested a Norton VPN server in Canada. This server was a bit faster at 84 Mbps, but still a far cry from our baseline speed of 500 Mbps.

If performance is your top priority, you may want to look at other options. The 7 Mbps test results were bad. And even the fastest test result, at 84 Mbps, it not very good performance when you consider the 500 Mbps baseline connection speed.

Comparison: When testing out WireGuard vs OpenVPN speeds, we were able to hit 445 Mbps with NordVPN using the WireGuard protocol and a nearby server. This was our fastest VPN speed test result.

Norton Secure VPN has a small support library with good setup and troubleshooting guides and in-depth frequently asked questions section. Theres also 24/7 live chat, support on social media platforms, and phone support .

The support library displays Quick Help guides on topics like Download and Install, Buy and Renew, and Help Protect & Fix, and the library also has a search option. While Id like to see Norton Secure VPN display all of the guides on the support page like CyberGhost VPN does, I like how the information in the support library is very detailed and thorough. I found the support guides very helpful, as they allowed me to resolve most of my issues. That said, I would like Norton Secure VPN to add video tutorials for setup like ExpressVPN and IPVanish offer.

On the other hand, Norton does provide a forum with an active community where you can post your questions or issues and interact with other users.

Norton Secure VPN is one of the few VPNs that has phone support. It covers 50+ countries, and the availability differs depending on the country . I tested the phone support line for my country , and I was connected to a live agent after answering a couple of automated questions. However, the agent was very friendly, very knowledgeable, and answered all of my questions.

Norton 360 Ease Of Use And Setup

Norton 360 is a big program.

Even its lowest-tier package includes a wide variety of features that other top internet security suites dont have. Just like with any large software, there is a learning curve when it comes to using Norton the company made some pretty good design choices to make the program easy to figure out, but there are also a few pretty poor choices that make some features more difficult than they need to be.

Norton is simple to download and install. Just choose your operating system from the my.norton website, download and run the installer file, and Norton 360 will automatically be running on your PC or macOS .

Once you have Norton installed, it gives you 2 options for the user interface: My Norton, and Classic. My Norton is the default interface its pretty good, although Im not sure why half of the window is dominated by an anonymous mountain climber.

Clicking on Device Security in the My Norton window takes you to Nortons Classic view, giving users the option to run virus scans, check for web protections, back up data, and run Nortons performance optimization tools.

The good news is that theres an alternative to Nortons desktop app during my time with Norton 360, I found myself returning time and again to Nortons online dashboard.

Limited Number Of Countries And No City Server Selection

When you activate Norton VPN, you can let the service handle the connection for you, or you can manually select the country for your VPN server. As of this review, the server network is limited, with locations in 31 countries. This selection of locations is on the low side when you consider that other large VPNs give you more than 50 countries to choose from, as you can see with NordVPN and IPVanish.

Note also that we said you can choose the country. Unlike most services, you can select the country you want, but not a specific city within that country. In some cases, that is just fine. In others, it can be a real problem.

The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that we dont know exactly how many locations Secure VPN has in the United States, nor how we get assigned to one of these spaces when we connect. Heres an example of the kinds of problems this can cause.

My bank gets twitchy when I log in from a different location than I did the time before. I have to go through various steps to confirm my identity every time this happens. With Norton Secure VPN, I dont know where I will connect within the United States. This time when I connected, it was to a New York IP address. Last time it was to a California IP address. This would make my banks security system go crazy which would drive me crazy.

The inability to control what city you log into is a major drawback of this VPN.
