Hi everyone!

We have an old problem that today, in the pandemic, has surfaced again. How do I get domain users to change their passwords through VPN? Is it possible to use Network Policy Server to reach that?

Hope I was clear enough.

I do this routinely. What problem are you having?

Do you use RADIUS for this? How do you do?

Let me explain a little more.

Users closes the VPN from workstations OUTSIDE the domain. Once connected, how can they change their user domain password? That’s the issue.

Based on my understanding, you want to allow VPN client to change their password themselves when password expired. Is that right? Please feel free to let me know if my understanding is wrong.

Did you want to achieve the following goal?When password has expired, VPN clients can change their password by themselves.

If yes, just check Allow client to change password after it has expired in EAP MSCHAPV2 Properties from NPS network policy. Then we can change password by ourselves when password expired.

If we did not check this option, then after password expired we cannot connect to VPN. As the picture below:

How To Allow Users To Reset Their Password Over VPN

I am in the healthcare industry and we have some users that are not technically part of my company but have user accounts in my domain. they RDP to servers setup for them with the applications they need. they use their own systems provided to them by the hospital they work for and use a VPN to connect to our network

here’s the issue…our password policy states all employees must change their passwords every 45 days which is fine for all users that have systems on our domain all the time. These outside users that only connect over VPN are the issue as when they expire they have no way to change their password and must call our helpdesk to have it reset and then the helpdesk resets the password to something very generic and must make sure “prompt user to change password on next logon” is NOT enabled.

is there a better way to do this??? is there a way to allow a VPN only user to change their password themselves when it expired or before it expires??

I setup “password-management password-expire-in-days 14” in ASA. At the VPN client, it prompted for the User Name, Password, and Domain. I typed in the password. Then, it prompted me for a screen for the new password and confirm new password. Then, it prompted back the screen for the user name, password and domain. I typed in the new password and got the error message “413 User authentication failed”. How do you setup so that the users can change password before the password expires? Any help is greatly appreciated.

To enable password management, use the password-management command in tunnel-group general-attributes configuration mode. To disable password management, use the no form of this command. To reset the number of days to the default value, use the no form of the command with the password-expire-in-days keyword specified.

If you do not specify this command, no password management occurs. If you do not specify the password-expire-in-days keyword, the default length of time to start warning before the current password expires is 14 days.
