Test Your VPN Connection
Now, you can begin testing your VPN’s servers. However, since we want to be thorough, we’ll ask you to access your VPN. If you don’t have it , you can proceed to the next step. So, do the following:
1. Launch your VPN client and connect to a server. That is done using your VPN clients interface, but you can also set up manual connections for the same purpose.
2. Then, visit WhatIsMyIP.com to test your Web connections data. You should see your IPv4, IPv6, local IPs, your city and country, and even your ISP. Of course, all of that data will come from your VPN connection. In other words, none of your “real” or “true” data should pop up on any IP address-checking websites.
3. Now, go one step further and visit IPLocation.net. We recommend using that website because it relies on several geolocation providers. Therefore, youll test your VPN server more thoroughly, checking for any data leaks. Also, pay attention to the location of your VPN server listed there, as you shouldnt see any inconsistencies.
VPN Server Vs VPN Client: Whats The Difference
In this guide we have talked about setting up a VPN server, but we also touch upon VPN clients.
So, whats the difference between the two?
Both a VPN server and a VPN client are required to create an encrypted VPN tunnel.
The VPN server is at one end of the tunnel, and the VPN client at the other.
The VPN client initiates the connection with the VPN server and authenticates itself before being granted access to the virtual private network.
While VPN servers can accept connections from many clients, a VPN client can only establish a connection with just one server at a time.
You install VPN client software on the device that you want to connect to the VPN server.
For example, on your Android smartphone that you want to use securely on public WiFi while out and about.
Internet traffic from the VPN client device is routed through the encrypted VPN tunnel to the VPN server, whether thats a server you have set up at home, or one belonging to a VPN service provider.
The VPN server enables hosting and delivery of the VPN service, and also masks the VPN clients IP address with one of its own.
So, if you connect to a VPN server located in your home, your web activity will be associated with the public IP address of your home network, even though youre not physically located there yourself.
In this guide we showed you how to set up a VPN server at home, but if you need help setting up your device as a VPN client, check out our VPN installation guides.
Everyone Online Has A Public Ip Address
To use the internet, all connected devices must have a public IP address. An IP address allows two devicesthe sender and recipient of internet communicationsto find and exchange information with each other.
The setup is similar to real-life address systems. For example, if you were to subscribe to a magazine, the magazine distributor would need your address to send you your copies. Without your address, the distributors wouldnt know where to send the magazine.
The same applies to the internet. Without an IP address, two devices would not be able to find and exchange information with each other.

Check Your Ip Address With The Command Line
If your device doesnt have a web browser, your internet access is restricted, or you want more detailed network information, there is another way to find your IP address: using the command line. However, you should note that the commands are different for every operating system. Take a look below for a step-by-step guide on how to find your IP address on Windows, MacOS, and Linux:
Windows 8 and 8.1
First, open up the console by pressing the Windows key, typing cmd, and pressing Enter. In the console window, type the following, pressing the Enter key after each line:
Note: many guides recommend running some variation of the ipconfig command, but this will not work. IPConfig will only show you your internal IP address, but your router gives you an external IP address, which is what the websites you visit will see.
Windows 10 / MacOS
If youre a Windows 10 user, you can open a command prompt by pressing the Windows key and typing cmd before hitting the Enter key.
MacOS users can open a terminal window by pressing Command + Space at the same time, then typing Terminal.
Windows 10 and MacOS both include an application called cURL which allows you to see your IP address with a simple, one-line command. Once youve opened the command line, just type the following and hit Enter:
Sudo apt install curl
Use Other Devices As VPN Servers
If you dont have an OpenVPN-compatible router and you dont want to buy one, you can host a VPN server on another device such as your Windows computer or macOS device but, like flashing a router, its a complex process.
Bear in mind that the device used as the VPN server needs to be switched on at all times.
If the device is turned off , you wont be able to connect through the VPN, which is a big problem if youre far away from home and unable to switch it back on.
Before making the VPN server you will need to set up port forwarding on your router so that the server will be accessible from the internet.
Our instructions for changing your NAT Type cover accessing and setting up port forwarding on your router.

What Is Your Real Ip
Whenever you connect to a server, AKA another computer, no matter where in the world it is, your system is required to share information about your computer. This information may include the physical location of your computer, as well as identifying information that allows the server to remember your computer for future access. Such data is shared in part due to your Internet Protocol address.
Once you are allowed access to that server, your computer will need a way to connect to the appropriate network. A network is made up of a group of computers that are all connected. Most of the time, an internet service provider will provide you the ability to connect to a given network, as they will complete all the necessary connections on your behalf.
An ISP will also provide you instructions on how to use the service once connected. They utilize several different types of techniques in the management of all computers in a given network. Different techniques are needed since each computer within the network is likely to be engaged in a different activity than the others, so all of these interactions must be kept separate.
For instance, if one computer in the network were to visit a website, that website must know which device to send the web page to. It cannot get mixed up between the others this is where the IP address comes in. The IP address tells that web page the address of the computer that requested it and informs the website where to go.
Can A VPN Be Traced
If you use a VPN, your IP address is changed and your online activity is encrypted, so you cannot be tracked. Some internet service providers or websites may know that youre using a VPN, but they cant see your actual online activity. So, you should use a VPN to minimize your chances of being tracked online.

Find Your VPNs Ip Or Server Address
There are several ways to get to your VPNs server addresses. However, keep in mind that not all VPNs are willing to provide that information publicly. In general, there should be no reason for a VPN to hide their server addresses, especially those marketing themselves as no-logs VPNs.
With that said, know that there are two ways to proceed. The easiest way is offered by VPNs that list their servers publicly. For example, some of those VPNs are NordVPN, PrivateVPN, TorGuard, and PureVPN. Use the provided link to get to their VPN server addresses.
Other VPNs don’t list their VPN server addresses publicly, but they’re willing to provide such information upon request. In general, any VPN that allows you to set up connections manually will be happy to provide server addresses .

What Is A Dns Leak
A DNS leak, or IP leak, as it is also known, is what happens when your IP address is accidentally revealed even when you are protected by a VPN. The DNS is responsible for translating URL addresses in word form to the numerical IP addresses the computer can recognize. One can be referred to as human-friendly whereas the other is deemed computer-friendly .
When your computer communicates with a server to request access, those devices are communicating in numbers. To retrieve the website you are requesting, your DNS reveals your IP address, again, so the server will send the information to the right destination. Standard browsers show your DNS, while VPNs anonymize this data.
During this communication, one of the things that can go wrong is your DNS request being sent straight to your ISP instead of being routed first through your VPN. If this happens, your IP address will be revealed to the server, resulting in a leak of your information.

Test Your VPNs Ip Or Server Address
Now, its time to check whether your VPNs server is a physical or virtual unit. Well do that by testing the servers ping, uncovering its true location. Do the following.
1. First, make sure to connect to your VPN using any server available. However, make a note of the server you’ve chosen . Still, if you don’t have access to a VPN and wish only to check its server address, you can proceed with that information only.
2. Use any Web browser to visit Ping.pe. After a couple of moments, the website will read your IP address while also providing a whole wealth of information. Next, you need to note your IP address, visible at the top of the website. Alternatively, you can proceed only with a VPN server address .
3. Input the IP or server address in the “Ping” field, located at the very top of Ping.pe. Then, hit the ‘Go’ button and wait a couple of minutes until the test is done.
4. The website will contact the chosen IP/server address from 30+ locations around the world. Keep your eye on the ‘Best’ column and identify the lowest ping value. That would indicate the true location of the chosen VPN server, based on its IP address or server address.
5. In the end, the location of the lowest ping value should correspond to the location of your chosen VPN server. If you see a discrepancy there, that would indicate that youre using a VPN virtual location instead.
So How Do I Hide My Ip Address
Hiding your IP address is shockingly simple: Use a VPN, or virtual private network.
When you connect to a VPN, you send encrypted requests that your ISP forwards to one of your VPNs servers that will deliver them to their final destination. During this process, the VPN masks your public IP address behind its own so that when your requests arrive, they look like theyre coming from that server instead of from your network.
This is good news if youre looking to access geo-restricted content just connect to a server in the region you need to be in, and youre good to go.

How To Check Your Real VPN Location
Updated on by Guest Authors
Look for a VPN, and you will find dozens of them claiming that they have a vast network of servers spread all around the world. A lot of VPN providers even provide you with an exact figure too. Private Internet Access, for instance, claims that it has VPN servers located in 33 countries. NordVPN claims to have 5,000 servers. While Express VPN boasts of having more than 3,000 servers.
Undoubtedly, having servers located across the world has its own benefits. The more locations are available at your disposal, the greater is the chance that you will be able to unblock geo-blocked websites and content.
For instance, ifyou want to watch a web series which is available only in South Korea, having aVPN with its servers in this country would help you out.
Whats more, if a VPN has its servers closer to your location, you will be able to get better performance.
But all this istheory.
The reality isfar different.
Even if your chosen VPN provider provides you with an array of servers on a map, the things might not always be true. This is perhaps it is highly recommended to have a look at the VPN reviews before choosing one. You can check the ExpressVPN review here.
