How Good Is Opera VPN

Don't Miss

Third Party Data Collection

Opera VPN Review & Tutorial

Operas privacy policy also describes how third party partners will be collecting your data:

Our applications and services include third-party technology or code, some of which may use your data in different ways. When such third-party technologies use previously collected data, they typically act as data processors for us.

These third parties include Google, Facebook, Yandex, Outbrain, and over a dozen others.

Opera is also collecting your location for targeted ads.

Chrome Extension Leaks Detected

The security nightmare continues to deepen.

IP leaks undermine a VPNs reason for existence. They uncover your IP address, exposing you to your ISP.

This typically happens through DNS leaks and WebRTC leaks.

A DNS leak bypasses the encrypted tunnel connection of your VPN, connecting you to a website with your original IP out on display.

WebRTC leaks occur when well-intentioned APIs undermine the security of your connection.

Whether the leak is coming from DNS or WebRTC, still the ending results are the same. Your original IP is visible.

Because of the dangers that leaks present to those seeking true online anonymity, we put all of our VPNs through a series of tests to see if theyre secure.

Out of four tests, Opera VPN failed one of them .

WebRTC leak was OK:

  • perfect-privacy.com/dns-leaktest: Passed
  • Chrome Extension Leak: Failed

Usually, we run a virus scan on installation software as well, checking for 66 different harmful viruses. But seeing as how Opera VPN has no installation software, we could not do that.

Opera Browser Data Collection

A quick look at Operas privacy policy reveals many concerning issues.

First, when you download the Opera browser you will be provided with a unique ID. This is often done by advertisers to track your online activities, which are linked to your unique ID for advertising purposes.

Reading the privacy policy, we learn that usage statistics is being recorded and linked to your unique ID:

The big red flag here is usage data and how this is connected to your unique ID.

No privacy-oriented service should be collecting usage data. This is the exact opposite of privacy but in the context of an advertising business, it makes sense. More data means better targeted ads and more advertising revenue. This is the same business model as Google, after all .

Device Compatibility Apps And Supported Devices

Opera VPN works in the Opera browser, and luckily Opera runs on multiple operating systems. The browser is available for Windows, Mac OS, Android, and Linux. But that means you cannot use it on other browsers like Mozilla Firefox etc.

On Android, the browser is downloaded with a VPN but not with iOS. Opera discontinued the iOS app, but it is available on the Android operating system.

It is a user-friendly VPN with an easy-to-use extension. If youre having problems with your app, try the tips mentioned in Opera VPN not working guide.

Keep in mind that the VPN is turned on by default, and you have to enable it from the settings. Once the VPN is enabled, it connects you to the fastest server according to your current location.

After connecting to a server, you can also check your IP address, and it will list your ISP as Opera Software or SurfEasy. Meaning, it is enabled.

Overall, Open VPN is easy to use, but there is limited functionality so it is very basic.

Do I Recommend Opera VPN

10 Best Free VPN as Reviewed by Reddit

Nope.

This is a free VPN and you dont need to buy it, but its STILL not even worth using.

Jurisdiction issues, leaks, no kill switch, no torrenting, and no customer support. This is like my ultimate VPN nightmare.

The only reason you should even consider using this product is if you want to use a VPN to watch Netflix. But even then, you cant select a country to connect to, so you have no idea which regional content youll get.

And to top it all off, its not even a VPN.

Its a proxy misrepresenting itself.

Which means there is no encryption, no tunneling, no protection, and no device support.

There is no silver lining here. There is no well maybe if you wanna do this, its ok.

This is just a bad VPN option.

Out of the 78 VPNs weve reviewed, we rank Opera VPN at number 76.

Who Owns Opera VPN

Opera began as a Norwegian company that offered a Presto-based web browser for most operating systems, until switching to Chromium in 2013. In July 2016, Opera was sold to a Chinese consortium led by Qihoo 360 and the Chinese billionaire Zhou Yahui.

Operas Terms of Service list the owner as Opera Unite Pte. Ltd., which is a Singapore-based company.

This is also a trend weve seen in the VPN industry. CyberGhost VPN was purchased by an ad-tech company, Kape Technologies, in 2016 for about $10 million. Later in 2019, Kape also purchased Private Internet Access. Then, in 2021, Kape purchased ExpressVPN.

McAfee, the US cybersecurity company, purchased TunnelBear in March 2018 for an undisclosed amount. We cover this topic more in the TunnelBear review.

The Opera contact page maintains the facade of a European business with a Norwegian flag and an Oslo address for the companys Headquarters. This is rather misleading given the new ownership and Singapore jurisdiction the business actually operates under.

Interestingly, just two months after the Chinese acquisition of Opera, they decided to launch the free VPN within the browser .

Could it be that the new buyers intended to leverage Operas popularity for data collection, which is a large and profitable business?

Security And Privacy Features

Security and privacy are the most important characteristics of a reliable and useful VPN solution. Lets see what Opera VPN has to offer:

Essentially this means that Opera VPN is not safe enough. If you simply want to hide your IP address and browse geo-blocked content, feel free to give it a try. Otherwise, if you take your online security and privacy seriously, you wont find your ideal VPN software here.

Some Alternative Options For You

Opera VPN Review – Worth Using for Mobile?

Our score: 9.8

Again, no one really has much information on whether Opera VPN keeps logs or not.

Or if the company keeps logs then what is the extent of those logs.

The only way to get an idea of what the company might be logging is to read SurfEasy privacy policy.

You can read it right here.

This document says that the SurfEasy VPN service does not keep/store original IP addresses of its users when these users connect to the companys VPN service.

Therefore, SurfEasy cant identify its users when these users take the IP addresses of the companys VPN servers.

Moreover, SurfEasy privacy policy also says that the company doesnt have any information on the applications, websites or even services that its customers use when they are connected to the companys VPN servers.

Why?

Because SurfEasy itself doesnt have that information since it doesnt store any.

Thats a pretty solid privacy policy document on the face of it.

But there are some exceptions as we will explain in a bit.

The most important point that you need to take note of here is that SurfEasy says that the company might make use of in-app analytics online technologies such as Google Analytics.

The company also says that it may do that in order to simplify and improve the overall VPN app, its design and of course, the actual VPN service.

This is not good.

In fact, if Opera VPN functioned as a paid VPN service, then this privacy policy would not have gone down well with the public nor its existing customer base.

You Can Sign Up For Opera VPN Anonymously

One privacy advantage Opera VPN does offer is that you do not need to sign up to use the service. This means there is no need to provide your email address, payment information, or any other personally identifiable information before you start using it.

This is better than the vast majority of VPNs, where you need to create an account or register payment information in order to use the product.

Nonetheless, Operas intrusive logging policy means the browser collects information that can easily be used to trace your activity back to you. In reality, the lack of a sign-up process is a convenience and a small anonymity boost, but nothing more.

How To Get Opera VPN For Free

At the time when many VPN providers the so-called free plans with limited bandwidth, speed or servers, Opera provides its users with the facility to be protected online and unblock restricted services free of charge. No limits!

The app installer might be found on many sources.

However, it doesnt mean it secure to download them.

In order for you not to face troubles while the setup process and not to infect your device with a virus, its indicated to use the official Opera site only.

Open Settings to enable Opera VPN in the browser

After it, you are to open the Settings and enable VPN .

If it is still unclear for you how to make Opera VPN run, follow the steps:

  • open Settings
  • choose Privacy & Security
  • enable VPN:
  • I wish to point out that the Bypass VPN for default search engines setting is responsible for enabling/disabling VPN for the default search engine, which is configured for the browser.

If you use Google as the default search engine, enabling this setting will cause unencrypted routing for all requests to Google, and your IP address will remain visible for others.

Why do you need it? Search engines often partially or completely limit the activity of those users who use proxies. Either you will have to confirm that you are not a robot every time you type a request or you will not be able to use a search option at all in some cases.

Therefore, I recommend activating this setting when complete privacy is not necessary.

    Operavpn Servers And Locations

Opera VPNs servers and locations are very limited, and youre allowed to choose from only three options. The locations are vaguely labeled as Asia, Europe, and the Americas. You really have no idea what city or to exactly which country youre actually connected. For some users, this works fine, but the limited options and ambiguity may be a pain for others.

Is Opera Browser VPN A Real VPN

Opera Browser VPN can be considered a real service, although it is not a VPN app.

A VPN app would protect all of your traffic, in and out of your browser. Opera, as mentioned, only hides your in-browser activities. As such, it acts more like a browser extension of a VPN service, rather than the real app.

It does have its positives, such as:

    • It is free.
    • It lets you browse privately.
    • Reduces tracking.
    • Works out of the box.
    • Encrypts your traffic and routes it through its remote servers to protect you from websites you visit.

However, it also has its downsides, including:

    • It is only available within the browser.
    • Speed tests have shown that its speed is unstable.
    • It doesn’t offer servers based on country locations.
    • It is bad for streaming.
    • File downloads can get interrupted.
    • It logs some data.
    • No customer support.
    • Lacks encryption.

In the end, Opera VPN acts more like a proxy than a real VPN, and if you require services of an actual VPN, you should definitely look elsewhere. But, if you just want a bit of extra privacy for free, OperaVPN is just as good as any proxy.

    Is Opera VPN Any Good

Opera VPN is a good choice if youre looking for simple, free browser protection, but not ideal if you need a VPN for privacy, security, torrenting, or streaming. It only protects your web browsing activity and collects anonymous data for advertising. Its lack of features and streaming capabilities makes it useless for most online activities. If youre looking for a good balance between speed, privacy, security, and access to streaming sites, I recommend you try ExpressVPN instead. Its policies and facilities were audited by an independent third party, confirming it really records zero data and keeps you anonymous online. ExpressVPN also provides consistently high speeds on all its servers and works with most popular streaming sites. If youre not sure that its worth the money, you can try ExpressVPN yourself and test all its features risk-free for 30 days, as it offers a money-back guarantee.

What Are The Most Common Opera Browser Issues

Opera is generally seen as a reliable app with relatively few major operational problems. Having said that, errors can arise, and here are some reasons why Opera might not work:

  • Opera wont open. Sometimes the browser simply freezes and refuses to play ball in any way. Thats something all browsers do from time to time. Thankfully, the solution is generally easy. Just reinstall your browser and choose NOT to remove your files. That way, you will retain your passwords and bookmarks.
  • Excessive memory usage causes poor performance. This doesnt happen too often, but when it does, the causes can generally be traced to your cache. Try erasing the cache and seeing how performance changes.
  • Cant access Gmail. This is a common issue for Opera users and a really frustrating one. Its also not hard to fix. The culprit tends to lie with your cookie settings, and by turning off Block third-party cookies, you can usually solve the problem.
  • How Secure Is Operas VPN

    Opera VPN Review

The safety and security of Operas VPN depend on two major factors: encryption of internet traffic to and from the VPN server and no logging. When you enable Operas VPN, your browser creates a secure connection to one of our VPN servers. This connection uses industry-standard 256-bit encryption. To put that number in perspective, the encryption key is one of an extraordinarily large number of keys . In other words, a hacker will not be able to guess the key. Your connection to our secure VPN servers will remain private and away from prying eyes, making it the safest free VPN provider.

What Do Other Users Say About Opera VPN

Before wrapping up our review, lets see what users have to say about Opera VPN. Well start with Reddit:

This user says something that confirms our speed test. He says that its very slow, mentioning the 90s. Furthermore, he says that its unusable for anything except browsing text and image, and claims that they sell your data anonymized, which can definitely be the case, as they share it with other countries.

Now, lets check the Google Play Store:

Long story short, this user complains about the browser being unreliable and buggy. Albeit, he gave it two stars, which could imply that he was probably satisfied at some point. Now, we usually go over to the Apple Store but since Opera Touch Web Browser doesnt include a VPN, well move to Trustpilot:

This is a short review from the user that claims that it doesnt load the pages properly in 80% of the cases. Which, if youre using this proxy, could very well be the case.

    Reasons To Choose Opera VPN

Privacy is one of the main reasons why Opera vpn was created. In fact, the words of the companys vice president of marketing were in charge of telling the public that its purpose is to give them the right to surf the Internet with as much privacy as they wish.

One of the reasons why it is most striking is that it is a free service. Unlike other programs, it is part of the browser that is already known and implemented by many for several years.

Because Opera VPN is a browser with integrated VPN, its speed is impressive even though it offers IP anonymity at no cost. Besides, you dont need to download and install anything special to be used in pc.

It has a large number of servers, although it offers only 5 different locations, clearly including the United States. While many may consider it a disadvantage that it is not available for Android and iOS, many like it to stay true to itself.

Currently this VPN has achieved a great advance in popularity quite effective, achieving more than 300 million users around the world. Another great advantage is that it has an advertising blocker included, and it also helps to save data.
