HOW MUCH IS A VPN : How Much Does a VPN Cost? Full Cost Analysis of a VPN Subscription

Romanian-based CyberGhost is a popular and secure VPN, so I was curious to learn why its often ranked behind competitors like ExpressVPN especially since it offers premium features at lower prices. In fact, its even more affordable now with the current discount.

To determine whether CyberGhost is truly worth your money, I conducted in-depth tests on its security, speed, and privacy claims. I also looked into whether its new owner, Kape Technologies, can be trusted. I even enlisted the help of my colleagues based in countries with strict internet censorship , so I could find out how powerful CyberGhost really is.

In short, Im impressed by CyberGhosts excellent security, streaming, and torrenting features and after extensive review, Im satisfied that the Kape Technologies acquisition is nothing to worry about. Of course, there are some areas to improve. CyberGhost doesnt work in China, and I was disappointed by the lack of consistency between its desktop and mobile apps. However, Im confident that you wont find a better VPN at such a low price.

Cyberghost Leak Protection Settings And Kill Switch

On a positive note, the new CyberGhost version 8 VPN client offers some good leak protection settings and a functioning kill switch to block VPN traffic if the connection drops. If you are in the CyberGhost Windows client, you can click the arrows on the left side to access the client settings and features.

With the kill switch and DNS leak protection settings enabled, I ran some basic VPN tests. These are to check for any data leaks with the VPN apps.

Here were the test results with the Windows VPN client :

Similarly, I also tested the CyberGhost Mac OS VPN client and did not find any leaks. The kill switch and leak protection settings seem to be working well.

Your Privacy With Cyberghost

Using any security or privacy software requires that you trust the product to not expose you to other dangers. This is particularly important for VPNs, because a VPN could have as much insight as your Internet Service Provider into your online activities. Protecting those activities is one of the key reasons to use a VPN in the first place. In general, CyberGhost appears to do a good job of protecting user privacy. We’ll attempt to summarize below.

The information CyberGhost collects, its use, and what information it does not collect, are all laid out in its privacy policy. While the policy has an excellent and easily understandable preamble, it quickly falls into something far more dense and difficult to read. CyberGhost should follow Editors’ Choice winner TunnelBear’s lead and produce a simplified and educational policy for its customers.

The company’s documentation says that CyberGhost does not store user IP addresses, DNS queries, browsing history, connection/disconnection timestamps, session duration, bandwidth, or the VPN server with which you connect. That’s excellent. The company does appear to collect information regarding connection attempts and successes, but only in aggregate form. A company representative told us that the CyberGhost not only does not log user activity, it also does not know the identity of the customers connected to a given server.

Cyberghost Position In Our Categories

Since companies have particular business demands, it is prudent they steer clear of choosing a one-size-fits-all, ideal software system. Be that as it may, it is difficult to come across such application even among branded software products. The practicable step to undertake should be to tabulate the different vital functions that call for a scrutiny such as critical features, pricing, technical skill levels of staff members, organizational size, etc. The second step is, you must double down on your research systematically. Go over some CyberGhost analyses and scrutinize the other software programs in your shortlist in detail. Such well-rounded research ascertains you weed out poorly fit software solutions and pay for the system that offers all the aspects your company requires.

Blockers For Malware Trackers And Ads

How Much Does A VPN Cost In Australia

CyberGhost offers 3 separate blockers against ads, malicious websites, and web trackers on its Windows, Android, and Mac apps.

The malware and tracking blocker worked well during my tests, but I was less satisfied with the ad blocker. CyberGhosts ad blocker only removes ads if they contain malware, which means I could still see ads when I streamed YouTube videos and visited news sites like the Daily Mail. It also failed to block banner and video ads on Buzzfeed and Kotaku, giving me an overall bad impression of its abilities.

The reason for its poor performance became clear with an explanation from CyberGhost support. The agent reasoned that running websites costs money and that blocking all ads would lead to zero revenue. I can understand their logic, but this should be made much clearer from the get-go when marketing their ad blocker.

This thinking is also mirrored in the technical implementation of their ad blocking. In short, the blocker works at the network level and attempts to modify real-time requests. However, most of the web is now run off HTTPS connections , and are extremely hard for CyberGhost to modify. As a result, it struggles to block the vast majority of ads.

If you want to avoid all ads entirely, youll need to invest in a trustworthy third-party ad blocker. I also recommend this option if you have an iPhone or iPad unfortunately, CyberGhosts ad, malware, and tracking blocker isnt available on the iOS app.

How Do I Download Cyberghost VPN

Follow these steps to download CyberGhost VPN on any device. I have used an example of a Windows app.

Step 1: First you need to subscribe to CyberGhost

Step 2: the CyberGhost Windows app

Step 3: Open the downloaded file and enter Username/Password

Step 4: Connect to any server e.g. UK server

Step 5: Once connected, start streaming anonymously

Is Cyberghost VPN Customer Support Responsive

CyberGhost has a responsive customer support service. It has 24/7 live chat support that will cater to any problem you face.

Other than the live chat support, you can find other resources that may be useful to solve your problem. These are:

  • Guides
  • Troubleshooter
  • General Info

The only fact that I didnt like was whenever the live chat windows appear, the first message you will see is theyre apologizing to users to hear they are canceling the subscription. Doesnt make sense at all.

Cyberghost Price And Refund Policy

The cheapest that you can get CyberGhost for right now is $2.75 per month, but youll have to purchase the three-year plan. Monthly plans will be significantly more money at $12.99 per month, as you can see below.

This is on the lower end of the price spectrum, particularly for the longer plans. This makes CyberGhost one of many cheap VPN providers.

The key question with pricing is always value, or what you get for your money. Id say there are other VPNs that offer more value with certain coupons. NordVPN is comparably priced to CyberGhost, and they also offer a NordVPN coupon for more savings. Similarly, Surfshark is also another cheap option, as we noted in our Surfshark vs CyberGhost comparison.

Refund policy CyberGhost offers two different refund windows, depending on the subscription plan you choose:

  • 45 day refund window for all plans that are 6 months or longer.
  • 14 day refund window for monthly plans.

This is a pretty good refund policy, and it is apparently no questions asked so they dont require troubleshooting before the refund is issued. For this CyberGhost review I purchased a one-month subscription via Bitcoin. Getting a refund was not very difficult. There are other VPN coupons here.

How To Get A Cyberghost Free Trial

How To Use CyberGhost VPN 2021 Complete Setup Tutorial Guide & Installation Demo

CyberGhosts free trial is a bit confusing, so bear with me. If you create an account on the CyberGhost website, there is no free trial. If you download the app on PC or Mac and create an account, you will be asked to confirm your email address to receive a one-day, single-device free trial. Once activated, this trial works on any device, but you have to log out of one device to use it with another. This trial does not require you to sign up for any plan or enter payment information. At the end of the trial, the service simply stops.

If you sign up on an iOS device, the free trial lasts seven days and includes full access on up to seven devices. However, it does require that you sign up for an annual plan through the app store at a slightly elevated rate of $49.99 per year . There is one other caveat to this option, and its an important one. Although the trial claims it lasts seven days, you actually need to cancel 24 hours before the end of the trial to avoid being charged.

The Android device trial is completely separate from the other trials. You can download the Android app and try the service for seven days without even creating an account, but the service will only work on that Android device.

If you want to try out a limited version of their VPN protection, you can use the CyberGhost Chrome extension or Firefox add-on. There are entirely free and dont require an account, but they only protect traffic in your browser and limit you to four proxy countries.

Cyberghost VPN Windows Test Results

For this CyberGhost review, I tested out the CyberGhost version 8 app on a Windows machine. The app has a minimized design that sits in the bottom-right cover of the desktop, just above the tray. Unlike with previous version, the client can now be moved if you dont want it stuck above the desktop tray. Heres the CyberGhost Windows VPN app that we tested for this review:

While minimized, it doesnt take up too much space. To adjust settings or change servers, you need to click the arrow pointing left, which will expand the app. Unfortunately, the expanded VPN client takes up an enormous amount of space on your desktop. I found this design to be clunky and inefficient. Here is the full layout of the CyberGhost VPN app, which takes up most of the desktop space:

When selecting different servers, you can see that CyberGhost categorizes servers for different use cases. This may be useful in certain cases, such as when using the VPN for torrenting, streaming, gaming, or with a dedicated IP. While some people want a VPN with a dedicated IP, there are drawbacks to this as your traffic is not getting mixed with other users .

Overall, I liked the general design when the apps are minimized. However, when changing settings or switching the servers, the apps are quite clunky and take up lots of space. Therefore I would not consider this to be the best VPN for PC.

What Protocols Does Cyberghost VPN Support

The perk of being able to choose which protocol you use while using CyberGhost depends on your needs and the device youre using. But what is it? A VPN protocol is a guideline that is used to arrange the connection between the VPN client and the VPN server. Whatever protocol your VPN employs will determine how your data travels between your computer and the VPN server. Currently, CyberGhost supports the following protocols:

  • OpenVPN : Most popular across VPNs

  • IKEv2: Most stable

  • Wireguard: Newest and said to outperform OpenVPN and IKEv2

  • Tunneling Protocol: Paired with IPSec it can offer extra security

A con is that on our first day using CyberGhost, we kept getting a roadblock whenever we wanted to change servers. We would get the following annoying pop-up.

Server Network A Large Network With Great Coverage

CyberGhost has an impressive global network of 7,580 servers in 90 locations. Thats a lot more coverage than most other top VPNs Ive used. It means your chances of finding a fast connection are higher because theres most likely a server close by. I was impressed that CyberGhost has 1,100+ server locations in the US alone but theres also a lot of coverage in Australia, Canada, and Europe.

Since about 8% of its servers are virtually located, it covers a lot of hard-to-reach locations as well . While this can sometimes decrease your speeds, it still allows you to access more global sites and apps, which is a plus. CyberGhost also offers several specialty servers for extra security and better performance.

Log Policies And Protocols

CyberGhost VPN Review: Legitimate VPN or Just Another Scam?

CyberGhost does not collect traffic data or connection logs, according to its Privacy Policy. This qualifies it as a no-log VPN provider. In addition, in 2021, the VPN intends to conduct an independent assessment of its logging policies. The business behind CyberGhost is situated in Romania, which is a privacy-friendly nation despite being a part of the EU.

CyberGhost encrypts your connection to ensure that it stays private. AES-256-CBC is the cipher of choice for them, as it is by far the most famous among VPN providers. The SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm is used to process authentication.

CyberGhost VPN supports these protocols:

  • WireGuard extremely fast but also very safe.
  • IKEv2: good on mobile.

How Private Is Cyberghost And Does It Keep Logs

As weve come to expect from all the big providers, CyberGhost uses 256-bit AES encryption, which is the gold standard. However, something we very much appreciate is the fact its apps are transparent when it comes to what data they collect about your usage you can be a good Samaritan and allow CyberGhost to collect some anonymous data to improve its apps, or easily opt out of this. Thats more than some providers can say.

In terms of logging, CyberGhost is insistent about its strict no-logs policy, and this is an important part of its online messaging. It claims that browsing history, the sites you visit, the data you transmit and what you search for are not monitored or recorded by the company. It also promises not to log your IP address, connection timestamps or how long you use the service for.

However, unlike rivals such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN, CyberGhost has not undergone a comprehensive independent audit of its servers and other infrastructure.

While we dont necessarily distrust the providers claims on-site, they are essentially just that claims. And while CyberGhosts Transparency Report gives us a little more reassurance, wed love to see a full audit to back up any and all claims on-site.

VPN Costs And Pricing Our Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, your digital privacy and security are up to you. A VPN wont solve all of your cybersecurity issues, but using one is certainly a giant stride in the right direction.

And like we said before, youre not going to pay an arm and a leg for a VPN. In fact, you can pay for a decent VPN like IPVanish or Surfshark with the change you find in between your couch cushions. And for more robust services like ExpressVPN and NordVPN , youre only looking at $10-$15 per month. Not bad for comprehensive digital privacy that could save you thousands of dollars and countless headaches.

For the most part, VPNs are extremely simple to use, and most offer plenty of great features. And to sweeten the deal, the majority of VPNs weve tested are offered at a price point thats more than reasonable for the safety, security, and peace of mind that come with them.

    What Is The Cheapest VPN

Virtual private network companies structure pricing and plans differently, but prices range from $5 to $12.99 for a monthly subscription. Some providers offer deep discounts for signing long-term contracts as a first-time user, while others make a basic plan free.

We compared apples to apples by looking at VPN deals for one month instead of annual plans. Free versions were not included. Not every cheap VPN service, however, is the same youll need to decide whats most important to you: VPN connection speed, server locations, limited or unlimited simultaneous devices, countries supported or the cheapest VPN service cost.

During our month-long testing and review of more than a dozen top VPN providers, we took all of these factors and more into consideration, so you can determine the best value for you.

    Cyberghost Now Supports Wireguard

CyberGhost also now supports the WireGuard VPN protocol. This protocol usually offers faster speeds and better reliability over legacy VPN protocols. For example, in our OpenVPN vs WireGuard tests, we found WireGuard to significantly outperform OpenVPN with all locations. With CyberGhost, you can use WireGuard with the desktop and mobile apps. You can change VPN protocols in the settings area of the CyberGhost VPN apps:

As you will see below, however, speeds with CyberGhost were not very good, even when using the WireGuard protocol.
