How We Can Still Route Google Wifi Through A VPN

How to Setup VPN on Your Router (easy, step-by-step tutorial!)

You dont need to trade in your mesh router, and you can still protect your entire network with a popular VPN like Private Internet Access, NordVPN or ExpressVPN.

But unfortunately it requires 1 extra router .

The solution: LAN-To-WAN behind a VPN router

Its possible to chain two routers together in a parent-child relationship, like we did in our dual-router setup tutorial. All traffic from the secondary router flows through the first router.

In this case, we want to put a VPN-enabled router in front of your Google wifi network.

What youll be able to do:

  • Route all Nest wifi traffic to the VPN
  • Choose specific devices to route outside the VPN

What Do You Need

To make this happen, you’ll need a second broadband router, one with an Ethernet WAN port . We’ll be installing special firmware on this router that lets you set it up as a VPN client. The router needs to be supported by DD-WRT, which is the name of the firmware we’ll be using.

To check if a given router is supported by DD-WRT, head to the website and click on the Router Database. Perform a search for a router model name here, and a list will come up revealing whether the router is supported or not. If it is, you’re good to go.

How To Install A VPN On Your Router

If you need VPN security but you’re tired of installing one on every device in your home or small office, maybe it’s time to add one to your router. Router VPNs protect any device connecting through them. Here’s how to do it.

These days, you need as much internet security as you can get. From telecommuting to simply watching your favorite show on a smart TV, the average consumer’s attack surface is three to four times the size as when most of us had only one PC. That’s not just a worry, it’s also a chore since you’ll need to install protective software on all those devices. But while you can’t get around installing separate antivirus software on every device, you can at least make your virtual private network concerns less aggravating by skipping the per-device procedure and simply installing a blanket VPN on your router.

What About Custom Firmware

Most major router brands have some for of 3rd-party router firmware that can be flashed if you have a little technical know-how. Popular firmwares like DD-WRT and ASUSWRT-Merlin allow you to unlock extra features, including VPN connectivity.

Unfortunately there is no 3rd-party firmware for Google wifi at this time.

The best alternative: ASUSWRT routers like the AC-68u have built-in VPN connectivity. You can use their AiMesh technology to create an even faster mesh network than Google wifi.

Some Benefits Of A VPN On A Router

  • You arent restricted to platforms that support VPN services. That means that you can unblock Hulu, DAZN, American Netflix, or whatever you want to unblock on our blog) on devices that normally do not support that such as the Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, or just your average smart TV.
  • You can protect your entire home/office by securing your entire network with an IP change and with encryption.
  • Protection of all devices.PrivateVPN does offer support for up to 6 devices at the same time which is enough for just about everyone, but if you connect a VPN to a router, and have 7 devices, all these devices will work as a router counts as just one connection.

Setup The Primary Router

Theres only minimal setup required on the main router, because its not actually doing anything besides passing on the already-encrypted traffic from the VPN router. You can use virtually any router in the world as long as it supports vpn-passthrough .

Frequently people will use the router provided by their ISP/Internet Provider as the primary router. In fact, some cable TV/internet providers require you to use their router .

The Steps:

  • Check the routers subnet/gateway
  • Check/Enable VPN-Passthrough
  • Get Your VPN’s Server Information

Before you dig into the new firmware of your router, you’ll need to get some specific information on your VPN.

Your best bet here is to run a search for “set up .” So you might search for something like “set up IPVanish DD-WRT.”

Most big-name VPNs will have tutorials for getting their VPN installed on several different types of routers. For example, OUR #1 RANKED VPN ExpressVPN has a whole section on manual router configurations:

You’ll find that the configuration is a bunch of numbers and URLs. This, for example, is the information provided by NordVPN for installing their VPN on DD-WRT:

    • Server IP/Name = us936.nordvpn.com
    • LZO Compression = Yes
    • NAT = Enable

At the very least, you’ll need the server URL or IP address and your user credentials. Most of the time, you’ll be able to get all the information you need from your VPN provider’s website.

You might also be able to download a VPN configuration file that contains the settings you’ll need. This will make the process a bit easier.

    1. Using Windows Start Menu, navigate to Control Panel.

    2. Pick Network & Internet. Then, select Network and Sharing Center.

    3. Use the link that reads Set Up a New Connection or Network.

    4. At this moment, a Setup Wizard should appear, letting you pick a connection option.

    5. Go ahead with Connect to a Workplace, and then select Next.

    6. Pick Use My Internet Connection .

    7. You now need to configure your VPN connection. Check below for more info.

At this moment, you will need to fill out two fields Internet Address and Destination Name. Those can be somewhat confusing, so heres what kind of information those who fields require:

    • Internet Address: This should be your D-Link routers public IP address . To find your routers public IP, access its admin panel and check its configuration information.
    • Destination Name: This is actually your future VPN connections name. You can input anything here but make sure to create a connection with a memorable name, to simplify the following steps of setting up a VPN on your D-Link router.

    8. Check the box next to Dont connect now, just set it up so I can connect later.

    9. Then, press Next, and you will be asked for your username and password.

    10. Input your username and password, and finish by using the Create button.

Drawbacks Of Setting Up A VPN On Your Router

There are potential pitfalls to installing VPN on your router on your own. The biggest? If you do this incorrectly, you could damage your router, rendering it inoperable. Then youd be responsible for spending the money to purchase a replacement router.

Another problem is speed. The more devices you have connected to a router enabled with VPN, the slower your router will be. In fact, with each device that you connect to a VPN-enabled router, you will have to sacrifice at least a bit of speed. Keep this in mind before you install VPN on your router.

    Access Your Routers Control Panel

Enter your network IP address on your browsers URL bar and open it.

Most routers use or or a custom URL, but in either case it will be displayed on the back or bottom of the WiFi box. This will take you to the login page. Consult the manual to determine the default username and password if needed.

How To Choose A Router Compatible With VPNs

Not all routers can run VPN client software.

If you have a modem and router combo device that came with your internet package, it most likely wont work with VPN software and youll need to buy a separate router.

So, which routers do work with VPNs and which one is the best?

There are loads of different router models that support VPN client software, and the best router for VPNs is simply the one that best suits your needs.

VPN-supported routers vary in price they start at around $150 and can go up to $500, so a lot depends on your budget.

Different router models also cater for different users some are geared towards gamers, while others are for more casual users who just want to protect their router traffic with a VPN.

Some router brands that provide routers that support VPN client software are:

    • ASUS
    • Netgear
    • Synology

You should also consider which VPN protocols the router supports and whether it can be flashed with new firmware.

As weve mentioned before, OpenVPN is the best VPN protocol to use on your router.

While its generally much easier to use PPTP and L2TP/IPSec as many routers natively support those two VPN protocols, they pose security risks.

PPTP can be hacked in minutes and L2TP/IPSec is not safe to use when used with a pre-shared key.

Sound confusing? Thats ok its simple once you learn how to navigate the jargon. Weve written a simple explainer to VPN protocols and their levels of security in our guide to VPN encryption.

If youre still new to VPNs, or are still using a free VPN browser service, then it may seem like a leap to invest in a new router setup for your computer. And thats understandable: its a big investment, and there is a lot to learn if you arent familiar with the technology.

To ease your mind, its worth noting that once youve purchased a router, the cost to maintain a monthly subscription is very affordable , which is a small price to pay for your privacy and security.

Exchange Your Router Firmware With Expressvpns

Heres a 5-step guide add ExpressVPN to an ASUS router:

    1. Downloading firmware

This step is the same as step 1 in the instructions for a Netgear router.

    2. Using the router for the first time?

Once more, this step is the same as step 2 in Netgear router instructions.

    3. Flashing ExpressVPN firmware

Be aware that router configuration, especially Wi-Fi password and SSID, will be deleted. Now, heres what to do after launching your browser:

  • Enter in the address bar.
  • Sign in with username/password. Its admin/admin by default.
  • In the left sidebar, click on Administration, then go to the Firmware Upgrade tab.
  • Click on the Upload link, then select the .trx firmware file.
  • When you get the success message, youll be asked to reboot your router manually. Do so using the physical Reset button.
  • 4. Connecting to the Internet for the first time

This step is indistinguishable from step 4 in the instructions for Netgear routers, except that the Wi-Fi name is ASUS___ or Broadcom_Northstar.

    5. Configuring ExpressVPN

Again, there are no differences between this and step 5 in the Netgear router instructions.

ExpressVPN seems to have it all not content with delivering the best service for regular devices, the British Virgin Islands-based firm also offers the easiest and most effective way of installing a router VPN.

Unlike a number of other options further down this list, ExpressVPN offers its own custom router firmware you can use on a wide range of compatible routers. One big benefit of using a compatible router, though, is the fact you can set up split tunnelling that means you can choose which devices use the VPN connections and which dont.

If things dont go to plan and if its your first time installing a VPN on a router, something may well go wrong ExpressVPN has class-leading 24/7 live-chat support which is pretty much indispensable when undergoing an in-depth process like this.

How To Build A VPN Router

    06 April 2018

We show you how to build your very own dedicated VPN router

VPNs are great for both privacy and dodging geo-blocks, but they do have limitations. For a start, not every device has a VPN client your game console, smart TV set and media player probably don’t have a VPN client app available. What’s more, your VPN service provider might only accept a single connection at a time.

The solution to both these problems is setting up a dedicated VPN router. With a VPN router, any device connected to it will automatically be routed through the VPN. That includes consoles and smart TVs and anything else you connect to it. It only counts a single connection from the VPN provider’s point of view, no matter how many devices you have connected to it.

Note that this is actually different from installing an out-of-the-box VPN service onto a router. We have another guide for this aptly named “How to install a VPN on your router“.

There are also providers like ExpressVPN who offer their own custom router firmware, which is arguably more user friendly than configuring OpenVPN on DD-WRT.

An alternative approach is to purchase a VPN router from Flashrouters or Sabai Technology and then subscribe to a VPN service that is integrated within the router control panel.

What you need to consider when you choose a VPN for your router:

    • make sure the connection is stable
    • get a VPN that is fast enough for all your day-to-day online activities: browsing, streaming, gaming, downloading
    • choose services that operate under the no-logging policy
    • get a VPN that has in-depth setup guides for your type of router.

Setting Up A VPN In Android

Like iOS, setting up a VPN on an Android device shouldnt be too difficult. Heres the manual process if youre not letting an app automatically configure things for you.

    • Head into Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced > VPN . If you dont see Network & Internet in the Settings menu , then do a search within Settings for VPN. Press the Add button.
    • If you happen to be setting this up on a new phone, or if you havent yet set a screen lock or password, Google will prompt you to first set one for your phone. Do so.
    • Now create your VPN profile. Add the VPN name, type, and Server address. Click on Save.
    • Youll be taken back to the VPN screen, where you should now see the name of your VPN. Tap on it, and put in your name and password. You can also choose to save your account information, and you can make the VPN always on. Click on Connect.
    • Enter the VPN name, type, server address, username, and password.
    • Then, save. Youre done!

Once youve got your VPN up and running, you might notice web browsing isnt as fast as it used to be, especially if youve configured traffic to go through another country. Stronger encryption, or more users connected to one VPN, can also slow down your internet speeds. Downloads might slow to snail speed and your League of Legends screen lag might be absurd. But thats not a big problem compared to the security that youve added.
