Set up a VPN connection
To use Remote Desktop Connection off-campus, you must use a VPN connection that you create on your home computer to establish a link to the Amherst network.;
VERY IMPORTANT: If your work computer is in a building that has been moved to the new network, you cannot use the VPN connectoids supplied by Amherst IT. The connectoids only work with computers on the old network. If the IP address you noted above begins with 10.49 then your building is on the new network.
From your off-campus Windows computer, connect to your work computer
- Establish a link to the Amherst network using the VPN connection you created above.
- Search for;Remote Desktop Connection. In the search results, right click on Remote Desktop Connection and select Pin to Taskbar. It will be easier to find there.
- Click on the Remote Desktop Connection icon on your taskbar. In the window your asked for the name of the computer your are connecting to. Enter the computer name you recorded above and press Connect. If you get a message that the computer can’t be found, enter its IP address and try again. If;you get a message that the IP address doesn’t work, then you’ll need to use the physical or MAC address that you recorded above:
- If your physical address is BC-5F-F4-6B-97-3B, then you’ll enter the following into the Computer line of Remote Desktop Connection:

How To Set Up Remote Desktop Connection
The Remote Access feature in Windows operating systems is designed to allow a PCs desktop, along with other files & folders, settings and programs to be accessible from a distant location.

How To Create A VPN Server With Your Router
- Log in to your router admin panel through a web browser

- Activate the VPN server
- Find out your public IP address from Google and note it down
If you are using a dynamic IP address, register for a dynamic DNS server and use it for remote desktop and VPN connections. You may also need to acquire a static IP address from your internet service provider.
Still, you can configure a secondary IP address and convert it to static. Without a static IP address, your devices will not connect remotely to the PC when the IP address changes.

Remote Desktop Connection Over Internet Through VPN
I have a desktop computer in my lab at my university, and I have a laptop that I take with myself. Both systems run Ubuntu GNOME 16.04. The lab desktop has an internal static IP address provided by my university, while the laptop connects over WiFi and has a dynamic IP address. My main use case would be to connect to my desktop PC from my laptop, from anywhere.

I had been using Teamviewer for remote access, but, it often got stuck, and had many other issues . I am looking for an opensource software built to handle my use case. Having built in VPN support would be perfect.
From reading countless forum posts, it appears that TigerVNC is the best VNC program. However, all user guides for TigerVNC, Remmina, Vinagre, and other VNC programs seem to require a server configuration, with a static public IP address. It is not possible to get a static public IP for my desktop. Neither can I configure custom port forwarding.
Got A VPN Server Already
If you already bought access to a VPN server from one of the VPN providers, simply go ahead and setup a VPN on Windows using the information provided. The same applies to connecting to a Windows PC in your school, university, or workplace. Ask the IT department for VPN information and the VPN protocol they use. Both the client PC and the target PC must be connected to the same VPN server. Create A VPN Server On The Host Pc
In the last wizard step, Windows asks you to write down the computers name, but it wont be necessary for our guide. Once finished, your host PC will be ready to access incoming connections through VPN.

Make sure you have recorded the details of your fully qualified domain name for VPN before you leave your office.

Change The Port Number Or Set Up Multiple Pcs For Remote Access
If you have multiple PCs on your local network that you want to be able to access remotely over the internetor if you have one PC but want to change the default port used for Remote Desktopyou have a little more work cut out for you. Setting up a VPN is still your better option here in terms of ease of setup and security, but there is a way to do it through port forwarding if you want. The trick is that youll need to dive into the Registry on each PC to change the TCP port number it uses to listen for Remote Desktop traffic. You then forward ports on the router to each of the PCs individually using the port numbers you set up for them. You can also use this trick even if you have just one PC and want to change away from the default, commonly-used port number. This is arguably a bit more secure than than leaving the default port open.
Before you dive into the Registry, you should also note that some routers allow you to listen for traffic on one external port number, but then forward traffic to a different port number and PC internally. For example, you could have your router listen for traffic coming from the internet on a port number like 55,000 and then forward that traffic to a specific PC on your local network. Using this method, you wouldnt have to change the ports each PC uses in the Registry. You could do it all on your router. So, check whether your router supports this first. If it does, skip the Registry part of these instructions.
