How To Choose A VPN For Mac
First, you need to ensure that the software you choose is has a macOS version. Some VPNs offer dedicated Mac software, though it is not always as supported as Windows is when it comes to custom VPN clients.
You also want to ensure that the VPN service can do what you need it to do. While most providers offer similar features in encryption, performance, and server locations, they can differ in other areas.
If you choose to use a VPN service that has its own app, you want to research it before downloading it.
Some VPN apps flaunt themself as being free. However, they have to make money somehow! Usually, they sell user data to third parties, still putting your privacy at risk.
Some third-party VPN apps may also install adware on your system, completely undetected! So, be sure you know what you are getting into before you download a third-party VPN app.

How Does A VPN Work
A VPN hides your IP address by letting the network redirect it through a specially configured remote server run by a VPN host. This means that if you surf online with a VPN, the VPN server becomes the source of your data. This means your Internet Service Provider and other third parties cannot see which websites you visit or what data you send and receive online. A VPN works like a filter that turns all your data into “gibberish”. Even if someone were to get their hands on your data, it would be useless.

Why Is It Important To Hide Your Ip Address
Your IP address is a unique set of numbers that identifies your device when you connect to the internet. Just as the postal service uses street addresses to deliver mail to the right people, IP addresses ensure that internet traffic gets sent to the right computers.
Your IP address links your device to your ISP as well as to your general geographical location. This is how content streaming platforms do geoblocking restricting content by region. Based on your IP address, you can see only the content thats available to viewers in your part of the world.
A VPN masks your actual IP address by showing the public internet the IP address of the VPN server youre using instead of your own. This prevents anyone from finding your IP address. Some VPNs cluster multiple users under one shared IP address, which further anonymizes your internet activity.
Pair that IP masking with encryption, and your online activities are kept fully private from ISPs, hackers, and government surveillance. A VPN protects you in many ways.
AVG Secure VPN enhances your privacy by masking you and other VPN users behind a single shared IP address. This makes it extremely difficult for anyone to link your web activity back to you, since multiple users are sharing a single IP address at any given time. Its just one of the many ways AVG Secure VPN keeps you safe online.
Prevent ISP tracking.
Prevent price discrimination.
So whats a VPN used for? Lets find out.
A VPN Doesnt Make You Anonymous
What the hell is a VPN? I already wrote an article explaining VPNs using simple concepts, even comparing VPNs to movie car chases.
But if you want a brief recap, when you connect your computer or phone to a VPN server, you establish an encrypted tunnel between your device and that server. Nobody can see whats happening in the middle of this tunnel, not even your ISP.
And yet, it doesnt make you magically anonymous. Youre just moving the risk down the VPN tunnel as the VPN company can see all your internet traffic. In fact, many of them sell your data to scammers and advertisers already.
Thats why I dont recommend signing up to a VPN service. You cant trust them.
As a side note, many sites now rely on HTTPS to establish a secure connection between your browser and the website youre using, even TechCrunch. You should install the HTTPS everywhere extension to make sure that you use HTTPS as much as possible.
But VPNs can be useful from time to time. Sometimes you cant access a website from a public network because its blocked. Or you could be traveling to China and you want to be able to access your Gmail account. In those cases, its all about minimizing the risk while you use a VPN.

Creating A VPN Server
To create a VPN server in Windows, youll first need to open the Network Connections window. The quickest way to do this is to hit Start, type ncpa.cpl, and then click the result .
In the Network Connections window, press the Alt key to show the full menus, open the File menu, and then select the New Incoming Connection option.
Next, select the user accounts that can connect remotely. To increase security, you may want to create a new, limited user account rather than allow VPN logins from your primary user account. You can do that by clicking the Add someone button. Whatever user account you choose, ensure that it has a very strong password, since a weak password could be cracked by a simple dictionary attack.
When youve got your user selected, click the Next button.
On the next page, select the Through the Internet option to allow VPN connections over the Internet. Thats likely the only option youll see here, but you could also allow incoming connections over a dial-up modem if you have the dial-up hardware.
Next, you can select the networking protocols that should be enabled for incoming connections. For example, if you dont want people connected to the VPN to have access to shared files and printers on your local network, you can disable the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks option.
When youve got things set up, click the Allow Access button.
Will A VPN Drain My Battery
The more apps you have open at any given time, the more battery power they demand, whether youre on your mobile device or your laptop. While your VPN app shouldnt use a large amount of power, it will still consume a bit more of your battery life than if you werent using it.
Some VPNs offer a battery-saver mode in the settings. If not, you can disconnect your VPN when youre not actively using your device.

Should I Host My Own VPN
There are advantages and disadvantages to making your own VPN server. Here are the main points to keep in mind when deciding what to do.
- You’re in control of your data.
- It’s usually cheaper or on-par with paying for a VPN subscription.
- You can use the VPN server for other things, like hosting a website or Nextcloud installation.
- Websites and services that ban VPNs probably won’t detect yours, because it won’t be on an IP block list. This doesn’t apply to Android apps, since they can detect when any kind of VPN/proxy is being used.
- Anonymity isn’t possible, since the VPS host will have your name and payment information.
- Your total bandwidth will be limited. Linode gives you 1TB/month, but you effectively get 500GB, because the data has to go from the origin to the VPN and then from the VPN to you.
- You won’t get special features that some VPN services provide, like malware/tracker blocking, unless you have the technical knowledge to set them up yourself.
- You can’t easily switch between different countries/locations.
