Can You Trust Your VPN Service

How to Setup an Android VPN connection

If you’re using a service to route all your internet traffic through its servers, you have to be able to trust that service. It’s easier to trust companies that have been around longer, simply because their reputation is likely to be known. The trouble is that the VPN industry is very young, and some VPN companies have been playing dirty. In this environment, figuring out who to trust is very difficult.

At PCMag, we give special attention to the privacy practices of VPN companies and not just the technology they provide. In our testing, we read through the privacy policies and discuss company practices with VPN company representatives. We look for a commitment to protecting user information, and practices that gather and retain as little user information as possible.

As part of our research, we also make sure to find out where the company is based and under what legal framework it operates. Some countries don’t have data-retention laws, making it easier to keep a promise of “We don’t keep any logs.” It’s also useful to know under what circumstances a VPN company will hand over information to law enforcement and what information it would have to provide if that should happen.

Input VPN Server Information

Provide all the server details the current page needs. Normally, you will have to input some text in the Description field, Server field, Local ID field, User Authentication field, Remote ID field, and Secret Field along with the Account field.

For the Description field, use your VPN services official name. Use a domain name or IP address for the Server field. For Remote ID, use the appropriate hostname. You can leave Local ID empty.

What you do online is your business, and using a VPN can help you keep it that way by hiding an important number called your IP address. ISPs and search engines like Google use your phones IP address to collect data about your online search habits. Ever notice those creepy online ads showing you products you recently searched for? Yeah, thats essentially Google spying on you. And with the recent repeal of net neutrality rules in the United States, keeping your online data safe from your ISPs prying eyes could become even more important in the near future.

Why Use A VPN On Your Phone

Should I run a VPN on my Android phone?

Weâre increasingly relying on our mobile phones for everyday tasks like messaging friends and family, watching videos and listening to music, going on social media, playing games, banking, taking photos, and navigating with maps. Plenty of your personal and sensitive data can be logged by your internet service provider, monitored by spies, and even soldâunless you have privacy and security safeguards in place. ExpressVPN protects your data with just one click.

If youâre traveling abroad with your phone, a VPN can help you overcome local censorship by making you appear to be in a different country, so you can unblock your favorite web services and apps. And if you want to stream a show or movie thatâs unavailable in your country, a VPN can help you with that, too.

How Does VPN Work

VPNs use a few methods to make this anonymous data security work:

Encryption scrambles your data in a format that only the destination will be able to read. Tunnelingprotocols are then used to create encryption tunnels within your Wi-Fi or cellular network. These provide protection by isolating and concealing your data from the rest of the users on the network. This is valuable when on any internet network, whether secured or unsecured.

Remote servers act as the destination for your encrypted data tunnel. Your data gets shipped out to VPN servers in other countries to help anonymize your identity. When the data exits and moves to its final target, all the location data is from the remote server and not your own. Essentially, these VPN servers are your protective middleman that disguises your data from interference.

Together, these main methods keep your private information from being sifted and snatched. The result is a level of cybersecurity and privacy that will give you more peace-of-mind.

What Is A VPN And How Does It Work

When you switch it on, a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between you and a remote server operated by a VPN service. All your internet traffic is routed through this tunnel, so your data is secure from prying eyes along the way. Because your traffic is exiting the VPN server, your true IP address is hidden, masking your identity and location.

To understand the value of a VPN, it helps to think of some specific scenarios in which a VPN might be used. Consider the public Wi-Fi network, perhaps at a coffee shop or airport. Normally, you might connect without a second thought. But do you know who might be watching the traffic on that network? Can you even be sure the Wi-Fi network is legit, or might it be operated by some nefarious individual?

If you connect to that same public Wi-Fi network using a VPN, you can rest assured that no one on that network will be able to see what you’re up tonot other users snooping around for would-be victims, nor even the operators of the network itself. This last point is particularly important, and everyone should keep in mind that it’s difficult to tell whether a Wi-Fi network is what it appears to be. Just because it’s Starbucks_WiFi doesn’t mean it’s really owned by a well-known coffee purveyor.

In a nutshell, a VPN establishes a secure, encrypted connection between your device and a private server, hiding your traffic from being seen by others. Of course, the VPN itself can still see your traffic, which is why you should choose a VPN from a company you trust. In addition, law enforcement can get its hands on your information through the VPN company. However, for the most part, a VPN offers you a way to hide your online activity from others.

Unfortunately, not all devices can run VPN apps. Your smart fridge, for example, isn’t a likely candidate for convenient app use. If this is a concern for you, you can configure your router to use a VPN connection, or purchase a pre-configured router from some VPN companies. This encrypts data as it leaves your safe home network for the wild web. Information sent within your network will be available, and any smart devices connected to your network will enjoy a secured connection. We haven’t tested this kind of setup, but we’ve come to believe it’s impractical for most people.

Another way to get your iPhone or iPad connected to a VPN is to access the Internet via a router that has an active connection to a VPN server.

The main advantage of this approach is that you dont need to install or set up anything on your device.

The drawback is that you need to set up the VPN on your router and that may involve some advanced settings.

The most common routers are VPN-ready and are able to establish various types of VPN connections. Here are several tutorials that we recommend:

    The Complications Of Privacy

VPNs do have have practical drawbacks. Some sites and services look at VPN traffic as suspicious and won’t let you connect. That’s a real problem, especially when it’s your bank that blocks you. In situations like that, you can try a different VPN server, but you may have to wait until you can use a trusted network without a VPN.

Chromecast and other streaming systems send data over your local network, but that’s a problem when you’re using a VPN. The same for printers, drives, or any other devices on your network. Those machines are looking for data from phones and computers on the same network, not from a distant VPN server. Some VPNs have options to allow local network traffic, or you could try using a VPN on your router, but the simplest solution might be to switch off your VPN.

Do you like Netflix? That’s too bad because Netflix does not like VPNs. The problem is that Netflix has a complex global web of regional licensing arrangements, and they don’t want you using a VPN to access Netflix content that’s not available in your home country. Some VPN services, however, work hard to ensure their customers can still stream movies and TV shows. It’s something of a cat-and-mouse game, and a VPN that works with Netflix today might not work tomorrow.
