Is A Free VPN A Good Option For Use With A Chromebook
Ill be upfront with you: While there are free VPN services that will work with your Chromebook, I would never recommend a free VPN for any type of use. They are simply not worth the risk they entail.
Many free VPN providers pay their rent and utilities by monitoring their customers online usage habits and then selling that information to advertisers and other interested parties. Some freebie VPNs are known to inject unwanted tracking cookies and advertisements into their users browsing sessions.
Besides being a privacy hazard, free VPNs can cost you in terms of time and convenience. You may be forced to wait in a queue before being allowed to connect to a VPN server. Then, once youre let out of the holding pen, your server selection will likely be limited, if you have a choice of server at all.
Once youre connected, its also possible that your free provider will put a monthly data cap on your VPN usage, and maybe even throttle your connection speeds. UGH!
Remember, a month of service from a reputable VPN provider will cost you less than a digital album on iTunes. Using a free VPN can cost you a lot more.
Using Nordvpn On Chromebook
Note: these connection methods may NOT work on some older Chromebook models.
There are two main connection methods you can use to secure your Chromebook with NordVPN:
Tip: Your VPN connection safety depends on your account password too. Don’t forget to use a strong password on your account, as it will help you to avoid credential stuffing attacks and will keep your connections safe and uninterrupted. As generating and remembering strong and secure passwords is not an easy task, we recommend downloading our free password manager NordPass. It generates secure passwords for you and stores them safely, letting you avoid time-wasting password resets in the future.

Will Your VPN Work On A Chromebook
If you decide not to use an Android VPN app on your Chromebook, you might be wondering if you can manually configure your Chromebook to work with the VPN of your choice. Fear not, gentle reader, as I have already trod the ground ahead of you and am here to share the fruits of my labor.
There are many VPNs that may work on Chrome OS; I researched the Chrome compatibility of 10 of my favorites. For each, I sought out documentation on how the company recommends Chromebook owners get online. I then tried to get online using that information.
NordVPN provides instructions, as well as warnings, on using L2TP. I was able to use these to successfully get online. Notably, NordVPN has an excellent tool on its website for finding a server that will meet your needs. NordVPN also offers a Chrome extension and an Android app.
Private Internet Access places a special emphasis on security, and using L2TP on a Chromebook requires you to generate a special username and password. Thankfully, the company provides a guide on this process, which I was able to use to get online. Private Internet Access also offers an Android app and a Chrome extension.
Unsurprisingly, the privacy-focused CyberGhost provides extensive documentation on how to use L2TP to get your Chromebook online. However, I wasn’t able to get it to work. A CyberGhost representative told me the issue is under investigation, and recommends users look to its Android app or its Chrome browser extension.
Benefits Of Using A VPN On A Chromebook
There are many different benefits to using a VPN to browse the internet on a Chromebook. Below is a list of some of the benefits of connecting to the internet via a VPN on ChromeOS.
- You can unblock social media websites like facebook, twitter, or instagram at school, the library, or your office. You can also bypass firewall filters that might prevent you from accessing certain sites.

- Hide your IP address You get a new US IP address to mask your actual IP address and surf the Internet anonymously.
- Private & secure browsing Whenever you connect to the Internet through VPN on your Chromebook, your data, including passwords, financial transactions and instant messages, is secured and encrypted.

Does Your Chromebook Need A VPN
A VPN, or virtual private network, creates an encrypted tunnel between your Chromebook and a server operated by a VPN company. By passing your internet traffic through that tunnel, you ensure it cannot be spied on in transit. You need a VPN because when it’s active, anyone on the same network as you, anyone that can access that network’s router, your ISP, and sneaky intelligence agents will all be kept in the dark. This is most critical on public Wi-Fi networks, but it’s important in every context.
Once your data reaches the VPN server, it’s no longer encrypted. But because it appears to be coming from the VPN server and not your computer , your IP address is hidden. It’s also much harder to correlate online activities directly to you. Plus, if you’re connecting to HTTPS sites, your data will be encrypted at every step of your web browsing.
You can also use a VPN to spoof your location. Just connect to a VPN server in a far-flung locale and all of a sudden your web traffic appears to be coming from the other side of the globe. This is useful for tunneling past repressive online censorship or just tricking a streaming service into letting you watch movies from a different part of the world. That said, using Netflix with a VPN can be difficult, because the company works hard to block VPNs. Note that using a VPN in these ways may break terms of services you’ve agreed to, and even local laws.
Zenmat VPN Chrome Extension
When you connect to the Internet using unsecured or public wifi, anyone on the same network can sneak in and steal your information. ZenMate is your suit of armor which protects you while traveling through unfamiliar Internet. Plans start around $10 USD per month and is another great VPN for Chromebook users who want something simple and reliable.

Is There A Free VPN For Chromebook
There are many free VPNs available, but a money-saving bargain they certainly are not.
With a completely free VPN, it’s vital to remember that the supplier will still need to generate an income. This is often done via apps riddled with ads and selling user data to third parties. As we’ve highlighted in the above section, many also hide malware that can infect your Chromebook and cause all sorts of problems. Not only do they pose a security risk, but theyll also offer poor service. Barely any reliable servers, limited features, slow connections – these are things you can look forward to if you pick a free VPN.
Another option is to find a reputable VPN that also offers a free version, AKA a freemium VPN. These will be secure, but unfortunately, they will probably have limits on your usage and scaled-back features. For example, Windscribe offers a decent free version. You get a good range of features, and your monthly data cap is set at 10GB. Its not perfect, but its worth a try.
Use Chrome Browser VPN Extensions
The simplest way to secure web traffic is to use a Chrome browser extension. Several VPN services have Chrome browser extensions. Simply select one from the Chrome Extensions Webstore and install it.
It should be noted that a Chrome VPN extension will only secure traffic from your web browser and not network traffic from other apps. Make sure you understand the differences between VPN apps and VPN extensions.
Did you know that you may use Chrome VPN extensions on Microsoft Edge as well? Thus, if you have the Edge browser installed on your Chromebook you may install and use your preferred Chrome VPN browser extension with the Microsoft browser.
