Can I Use A Free VPN With An Asus Router
Most free VPNs support the major operating systems, if youre lucky, but are unlikely to have support for router configuration. Even if you do manage to get one set up, youre opening yourself up to a host of other issues.
Free VPNs have very few servers to choose from, and lots of users trying to access them. This means youll have to endure slow, unreliable connections which clearly isnt ideal when youre trying to cover all the devices in your home. You may even have to wait to connect to a server, which means youll be unprotected for an indefinite amount of time.
Whats more, free VPNs are known for their shady business practices. If theyre not constantly bombarding you with ads, theyre likely tracking your activity and selling the data to advertisers who will target you with ads themselves. Some free VPNs fail from a security standpoint too by using weak or non-existent encryption. There have even been reports of free VPNs infecting devices with malware.
When protecting every device in your home, its essential that you go with a reputable provider that prioritizes security, privacy, and user experience.
We Show You How To Work Some VPN Magic With An Asus Router
One way of setting up a VPN is to install the client software on a single PC. This is the most common method, particularly for novice users, as it has the major advantage that its a nice and simple way to set everything up.
However, more advanced users might want to install a VPN not on a single computer, but rather on their router. Remember that the router oversees the entire network, so having the VPN installed at this level means that all data is encrypted as it leaves the LAN. This way, every device on the network is using the VPN by default, and you dont have to worry about hardware not being supported by the VPN provider.
Configuring the VPN in this manner is described as using a VPN router. However, youll still have to do some tinkering each time you wish to change VPN server locations.
If youd like a more an even more user-friendly approach to the VPN router, check out the ExpressVPN app for routers, a custom VPN router firmware. We reviewed the Linksys version two years ago, but its now also available on select Asus and Netgear models.
While some folks may be willing to pay the price for the convenience of a VPN router, this is hardly necessary, as some standard routers can be configured to work with a VPN by the end user.

Why Use A VPN On Your Router
When it comes to using a VPN in general, the main reason many people can identify with is for privacy and security. A VPN connection is sent through a secure tunnel to the VPN server of your choosing before being passed on to its ultimate destination the website or server youre trying to access.;
Before your data leaves your computer to head to the VPN server, it is encrypted to ensure that even if its intercepted while in transit, the person who grabbed the information cannot tell what the information actually is.
Then, once youre connected to the VPN servers, you are passed off to your destination, which makes it appear to the website or server as though you are not connecting from your computer, but rather from the VPN server itself. This can make it appear as though you are in a different location and will help protect your identity and other online information.

Basic VPN Skills For Newbies And Experts
It is highly reckless to neglect the use of a VPN on routers and devices. With governments tightening their surveillance and marketers building behavioral profiles, such a service should be the preference for all. Here are some tricks to help you use it to the fullest extent:
Choose a VPN that matches your preferences. There are plenty of factors that might influence your decision. Do not be shy to put different services up to the challenge by starting free trials. A 7-day or a month trial will reveal the basic use cases, principles, user-friendliness of the interface, and other convenient features.
Pick servers closer to you. If speed is your top priority, you should select servers that are near you. As a result, the internet connection will be smoother.
Avoid using VPN on routers and devices. You might assume that such double-sided security helps you build a stronger protective wall against hackers and surveillance. However, in the majority of cases, it infringes the speed of your internet connection.
Get a dedicated VPN router. If you have the resources, a convenient way is to set up two routers in your home or office. Designate the first device as the one transmitting the VPN for all gadgets without the native VPN support. For devices that have VPN apps installed, use the second router with the traditional setup.

Ease Of Use & Unlimited Devices
When it comes to using a VPN on your router specifically, the main benefit is ease of use. Once set up, a VPN on a home router will be able to protect all of your devices as long as they are connected to the router. You will no longer have to connect each device individually or worry about disconnecting, since your home network will always be tunneled through a VPN.
Another reason some people turn to setting up their VPN on their home router is to get around the limit some VPN services put on how many devices can be connected to the VPN at once.
For example, NordVPN limits users to six simultaneous device connections; however, a wireless router only counts as one device. With this semi-loophole, you can get many more devices connected to a single account by connecting them to the router, but it still only counts as one of your accounts connections.
- Easier to use across many devices
- Can be faster than running a VPN on your device, depending on the router model
- Can allow for more connections per account;
- Potential loss of some speed compare to no VPN at all
- Can be more work to change servers or protocol settings compared to VPN clients

How To Setup And Configure An Asus Router As A VPN
Setting up an Asus router as a VPN with OpenVPN protocol is easy to do with a few steps.
Some Asus router hardware is better at running a VPN compared to others.
For example, an ASUS RT-AX58U runs a VPN very well while an older RT-AC58U may struggle a bit. This has to do with the CPU the router has to process the VPN data.
If you have an older Asus router it wont hurt to try and use it as a VPN but it may run slower compared t newer units.
Things Needed to Configure an Asus Router as a VPN
- VPN Provider
- VPN Provider Configuration File
- Router User Name Password
- A Computer Connected to the Router and Internet
A VPN provider will be needed with many good VPN services available.

If your Asus router doesnt belong to the list of routers I mentioned above, youll have to follow a more technical process to install your VPN on the router. This method involves 2 distinct steps: flashing your router with DD-WRT and installing the VPN client.

Flashing your Asus Router with DD-WRT
The first thing you need to do is to check this list and see if your router supports DD-WRT. If your Asus router isnt on the list, then I suggest upgrading your router to a VPN ready model.
As I mentioned above, the complicated part of this process is downloading the correct firmware for your router. The reason why its important to download the correct firmware is that the firmware will be your routers new operating system.
