What About Free VPNs
Worthwhile free VPNs are rare, but they do exist. Many VPN services offer a free trial, but it’s usually for a limited time. Others, like TunnelBear and Hotspot Shield, have totally free versions but reserve some features for paid users. ProtonVPN is our top choice for free VPNs, because it places no data limitation on free users.
Unfortunately, most VPNs are a far cry from free, but you don’t need to break the bank to get protected. After trying out a service for a month or two, you can save more by purchasing longer-term contracts. Our list of cheap VPNs is a great place to start if money is tight.
Protecting The Whole Network With VPN For Wifi Routers
So, how does VPN Unlimited work with WiFi routers? A VPN creates a secure, encrypted connection tunnel between the internet and your device. It gathers the devices internet requests and traffic, routing them through a VPN server via the VPN tunnel. This protects your data from getting read, redirected, or intercepted by third parties.
Most WiFi routers lack any of the VPN capabilities However, WiFi routers do allow VPN traffic to pass through. But for the ultimate effect, its actually possible to install a VPN into the router itself, allowing you to establish a secure connection for all devices connected to the Wi-Fi network.
When you set up a VPN at the router level, you protect all smart devices on your home network and all business web traffic on your corporate network. An important distinction is that you don’t actually install VPN Unlimited on your device, only to the WiFi router. For this, you download new firmware for the WiFi router to enable VPN and then configure the settings of the WiFi router manually.
Setting Up The VPN Client
First get your router talking to the Internet on one side and your local area network on the other. Then set up any more advanced network settings you need, such as Quality of Service or access controls. Only once the router is fully humming should you consider installing your VPN client.
To do that, you will need to navigate to the VPN tab under Services. From there, check the Enable Bubble next to “Start Open VPN Client.” At this point, there is no single set of instructions to make this work. The settings will be completely unique to the VPN provider. However, there are ready-made instructions for setting up your VPN client on DD-WRT for several of PCMag’s top VPN players. For example, NordVPN has DD-WRT setup instructions here, and Private Internet Access VPN has the same thing for its VPN here. Some VPN brands will want to install their own software, some will want to use OpenVPN. Just follow the instructions for your VPN brand, and you’ll be right on track.

Can I Use VPN On My Router
If you do this, you will find that youll need to install a VPN client on your wireless device. When you use a VPN client on your router, any user who uses your local network for web browsing or accessing cloud services will automatically use the VPN since they cannot afford to miss a step through the always-on hoops.
Why Get A VPN

VPNs are internet security must-haves for a number of reasons. First, they make your computer appear as if it’s in a geographic location other than where you actually are. That’s because you’re logging into a server operated by the VPN provider and then running your web sessions from there. That means when cookies or Big Bad Government Agencies try and trace you from your web activities, they’ll find the VPN provider’s server, not you. Even better, just like you, hundreds or thousands of people will be doing the same thing off the same server.
But VPNs do more than anonymize your session. They also encrypt your traffic. VPNs can use a variety of different encryption methods, but the most popular is the AES 128-bit or 256-bit standard. Combine that with anonymization, and you’ve got a scenario where your location is hidden and your individual encrypted traffic stream is ridiculously difficult to pick out because your stream of encrypted gobbledygook is one of hundreds or thousands of other streams of encrypted gobbledygook pouring into and out of that same server farm.
That’s the draw of a VPN: You get all those benefits just by installing a simple web client on your device and making sure it’s active before starting any other web or cloud session.

C Flash Router With New VPN Firmware
The last option, and the most complicated, is to flash your router with new firmware. To clarify, the term flashing means to install new firmware firmware is the Operating System within your router that determines what its capabilities and/or limitations are.
To enable your router to function as a VPN client, you need to flash it with new firmware. The two most common and established types of firmware out there are DD-WRT and Tomato.
DD-WRT and Tomato are open source, third-party firmware that are available online for free, and each has its own pros and cons. But first, lets see what they have in common. Both DD-WRT and Tomato can:
- Extend your wireless range
- Disable manufacturer backdoors, among others
Here is where they differ:
DD-WRT is more accessible and available on more devices than Tomato. As far as exclusive features, DD-WRT allows users to adjust the strength of their Wi-Fi signal, manage quality-of-service settings to prioritize specific types of traffic, access your home network from afar, and more.
Tomato offers better bandwidth monitoring options, permits up to two VPN servers to run at the same time, and offers a more user-friendly interface. It also connects better to various VPN service providers, but is not supported on as many routers. To see an in-depth comparison of the two types of firmware, you can view Flashrouters article here.
How To Configure Your Router For Nordvpn
The exact method of configuring your router to work with NordVPN will differ depending on the manufacturer and potentially even the model.
So while we can’t provide a definitive step-by-step guide for your specific router, here are the general steps you need to follow. Also, note that you can find instructions for various routers on NordVPN’s website.
First, log into your router. This involves typing its IP address into your web browser. Then, to change settings you will need to enter the admin password. That’s usually on a sticker somewhere on the router itself. For more help, read our guide which explains exactly how to connect to your router.
Next, look for the VPN settings. This will usually be under advanced settings, but do remember not every router has these: you must be using a compatible model.
Be sure to find the VPN client settings, not the server settings. Here’s how it looks on an Asus router:
Now add a profile, which will include your NordVPN username and password. You can find these in your NordVPN dashboard.
If there’s an option, select ‘auto reconnection’, which will re-establish the VPN connection if it drops for any reason.
Enter a name for the connection. You can call it NordVPN , where country is the location of the server you’ve chosen.
When you see the option to import an .ovpn file, click the button to import it and navigate to where you downloaded the file from NordVPN’s website.
Once that’s done, you should be able to save the configuration.

Installing Nordvpn On Your Router Means Every Device Gets A Protected Private Internet Connection
| 31 Jan 2022
NordVPN allows you to connect up to six devices simultaneously to its service. But if you set up a compatible router to use a VPN connection, then any device that connects to the internet through your router will be using the encrypted connection – no matter how many you have.
It also means devices that don’t support VPNs can get the benefits of unblocking, and all devices – such as smart speakers, security cameras and other smart home gadgets – get that extra layer of security and privacy.
Not all routers support VPN connections, so you’ll need to check first if your does. You can either check with the manufacturer – often your internet service provider – or simply log into the router itself and have a look through the menus for VPN settings.
However, even if it does support VPN connections, NordVPN no longer supports L2TP/IPsec and PPTP connections, so if your router only supports those protocols, you’re out of luck. Instead, you’re looking for OpenVPN support.
Specifically, it needs to support OpenVPN as a client . The best way to find out if it does is to search online for the make and model of your router. If you discover your router has ‘pass-through’ support for OpenVPN, that’s no good: this merely allows connections from devices and won’t block them.

Why Use A VPN On Your Router
When it comes to using a VPN in general, the main reason many people can identify with is for privacy and security. A VPN connection is sent through a secure tunnel to the VPN server of your choosing before being passed on to its ultimate destination the website or server youre trying to access.
Before your data leaves your computer to head to the VPN server, it is encrypted to ensure that even if its intercepted while in transit, the person who grabbed the information cannot tell what the information actually is.
Then, once youre connected to the VPN servers, you are passed off to your destination, which makes it appear to the website or server as though you are not connecting from your computer, but rather from the VPN server itself. This can make it appear as though you are in a different location and will help protect your identity and other online information.
