Setting Up A VPN Server On Mac
How Does VPN Work
The VPN extends a private network across public networks like the Internet. It allows a host computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it is an integral part of the private network with all the functionality, security, as well as management policies of the private network.
How To Configure A VPN Manually On Windows
These details are specific to your VPN, which means that you will need to contact your VPN to ensure that you have everything you need – before you start setting up your VPN manually in Windows. Once you have this information, you are ready to set up the VPN:
Navigate to Settings > Network & Internet
Click VPN on the left to open the setup menu
Click Add a VPN connection
In the VPN provider box, select Windows
In the Connection name box, give your VPN connection a name.
Please note: If your VPN provider requires you to connect using a particular name, you will need to use that to continue. Ask your VPN to find out.
In the Server name or address box, type in the address that your VPN has given you.
In Windows 10, it is impossible to set up a VPN connection without the URL or IP address of your VPNs server.
Under VPN type, select the protocol that you are currently setting up.
This is your choice but depends on what options are available to you with your VPN provider. If possible, we recommend that you opt for L2TP/IPsec, IKEv2, or OpenVPN.
Please note: Selecting the wrong encryption type can cause issues. If the VPN does not work after you set up, try again and opt for Automatic at this stage instead.
In the Type of sign-in info box select Username and password.
Enter your username and password you used when signing up to your VPN.
With everything now filed correctly, ensure that the Remember my sign-in info box is ticked and click Save in the bottom right.

How To Modify The Number Of Simultaneous Connections

The number of dial-up modem connections is dependent on the number of modems that are installed on the server. For example, if you have only one modem installed on the server, you can have only one modem connection at a time.
The number of dial-up VPN connections is dependent on the number of simultaneous users whom you want to permit. By default, when you run the procedure described in this article, you permit 128 connections. To change the number of simultaneous connections, follow these steps:

How To Set Up A VPN Connection Manually In Windows 10
Should you prefer, you can configure a VPN connection manually. Just know that this method means you won’t have a kill switch, so if the VPN connection stops for any reason, data will be routed via your ISP as normal and you’ll lose the protection .
The other disadvantage is that there’s a bigger risk of DNS leaks, which can mean your ISP can still see what you’re up to even if the VPN connection is running. Put simply, you really need to know what you’re doing if you’re going to configure a VPN manually.
To do it, type VPN in the Windows 10 search box. Click on VPN Settings when it appears in the results.
However, for the top-most setting, there is only one option: Windows . Select that, and then type a name for the connection, which is usually the name of the VPN service. However, as the connection is specific to one server, you may want to append UK or whichever country you choose a server from.
If you need to change country, you’ll need to set up a new VPN connection, so it’s much less convenient than having an app.
You’ll also miss out on any extra features offered by the app, such as a kill switch which stops all internet traffic should the VPN connection stop for any reason. Plus, you will have to use the VPN protocols listed under VPN type, which don’t even include OpenVPN let alone new ones such as WireGuard.
How To Set Up A VPN Server On Windows 10
Once you have set up DDNS to use a domain name instead of a complicated IP address and forwarded port 1723, you are now ready to set up a VPN server on your device.
To create a VPN server on Windows 10, use these steps:
Open Control Panel on Windows 10.
Click on Network and Sharing Center.
Using the left pane, click the Change adapter settings link.
Network and Sharing Center
On Network Connections, open the File menu pressing the Alt key, and select the New Incoming Connection option.
Check the users that you want to have VPN access to your computer, and click the Next button.
Alternatively, you can click the Add someone button to create a new VPN user:
Check the Through the Internet option.
Click the Next button.
On the networking software page, select the Internet Protocol Version 4 option.
Click the Properties button.
Check the Allow callers to access my local area network option.
Under the IP address assignment section, click the Specify IP addresses option and configure the number of clients allowed to access using a VPN connection.
Quick tip: In this setting, you will be telling the number of users that can access the network by specifying an IP address range. It is recommended that you use a high-order range of IP addresses to help avoid conflicts in the network with the IPs distributed by your router. To find out the range of IP addresses you can use, navigate your routers settings page and look for the DHCP settings.
Click the OK button.

What You Need To Get Started
First, you need to choose and sign up for a VPN service. No, you’re not going to be using its apps, but you still need to access its servers. Ideally, you already have a VPN service that you are signed up for and using on all your other devices, be they PCs, phones, or tablets. But the truth is, PCMag’s research shows that many of you aren’t using a VPN. That’s bad, but there’s no judgment here, because you’re reading this piece because you’re about to start, right? If you do need to choose a VPN service, click the link in the first paragraph of this piece, read a few reviews, and pick the one that sounds right for you. Once that’s done, come back here and continue.
The second thing you have to do is decide which VPN protocol you want to use. This is the setup that creates the encrypted tunnel. There are four main protocols supported by VPN companies: IKEv2/IPsec, L2TP/IPSec, OpenVPN, and PPTP.
Our preferred protocol is OpenVPN, which is newer and has a reputation for reliability and speed. IKEv2/IPSec is a solid second option and uses new, secure technology. Many VPN companies warn against L2TP/IPSec, which is not as secure as newer protocols. Generally, it’s supported only for use on older, legacy systems. The same is true for PPTP, which you should avoid using if at all possible.

Configuring L2tp/ipsec Or Pptp

OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec are newer technologies that create secure VPN connections. L2TP/IPSec and PPTP are older and widely considered less secure. In fact, many VPN companies include notes on their tutorials for these protocols indicating that users should not, if they can help it, use them.
That said, because of their age these protocols are widely supported. If nothing else works, you could give them a try, but we’re not going to detail their workings here, because we don’t recommend them.

How To Set Up And Use A VPN
A VPN is one of the simplest ways to protect your privacy online. Best of all, installing and using a VPN app is easy. Whether you’re working from home because of COVID-19 or you’re using unsecured Wi-Fi in a coffee shop, this is how to do so safely!
It might sound paranoid to say you should use a virtual private network as often as possible, but there are real threats to your privacy. Whenever you connect to the internet, your internet service provider has access to everything you send and has been given the green light from Congress to sell your anonymized information to advertisers. If Coronavirus has forced you to start using public Wi-Fi, unscrupulous individuals can attempt to intercept your web traffic. Out on the wide-open internet, advertisers can track your movements between websites and discern your location by peeking at your IP address. And don’t forget what three-letter government agencies may be up toit’s scary out there!
The fact is that the internet was created for easy information exchange, not user privacy, anonymization, or encrypted communication. While HTTPS goes a long way toward protecting your information, it doesn’t guard against all ills. Unless and until a new, more private internet comes togetherdon’t hold your breathusing a VPN is the easiest way to make sure that you’re sharing as little information as possible.

How To Understand VPN Protocols
Traditionally, there are five VPN protocols. Here’s more about each protocol:
- OpenVPN is an open-source protocol. This makes it easier to adapt to a wide range of configurations and purposes. It is not the fastest connection, but it is one of the most versatile, especially when incorporating third-party resources.
- L2TP/IPSec is the most common VPN protocol of all. It is an older protocol but still plenty secure and is ideal for creating specific secure tunnels. It is fairly fast, universally applicable and has no documented vulnerabilities.
- PPTP is another widely used protocol. It was designed for dial-up networks. There are, unfortunately, a number of known security flaws with PPTP.
- SSTP is also known as secure socket tunneling. It was designed for Windows and is not widely used because of its restricted design. Despite that, it ranks competitively in terms of security and speed.
- IKEv2 is designed for mobile devices. Technically speaking, it is not a VPN, but it serves a similar role in mobile spaces.
