TorGuard VPN not only includes working instructions on how to use L2TP on a Chromebook, but also offers thorough instructions on how to get your Chrome OS machine online using OpenVPN and even AnyConnect. All three worked in my testing, and it’s the most comprehensive and successful experience I had during my time working on this project. Be sure to browse all of TorGuard’s articles on the subject. The company also provides an Android app.
Sign Up For A VPN Service
Almost all VPN services offer an Android app that will work in Chrome OS, but for a list of recommended ones, please see 5 Best VPNs for Chromebook for a list of the best services.
Your chosen service will provide a link to its Android app in the Google Play Store, or you can search the Store yourself for it. To do this, simply launch the Play Store from your Apps Launcher.
Search for your VPN of choice and hit Install.
Use Your VPN Providers One
If your favorite VPN provider offers a Chrome extension , you can use that too. Simply install it, click the toggle, and bam, youre done.
Thats literally all there is to it.
However, not all VPNs are going to support Chrome OS directly , so if yours doesnt have an Android App or a Chrome extension, youll need a VPN that also allows for manual setupin my case, I use StrongVPN.

How We Rate Our VPNs
- User Score
To figure out which VPNs are worth your money, we looked at what each VPN offers, starting with features.
When using a VPN, your priority should be security. That’s why we chose VPNs that have military-grade encryption, a range of protocols , DNS leak protection, and a kill-switch. We also looked at the number of servers and locations, and we tested each VPN for speed.
We then tested each VPN’s ease-of-use, from downloading and installing the software to connecting to the right server. Customer support is also a crucial aspect, so we examined each VPN’s availability, what forms of contact are available, and how efficient their support team is. We compared all of that to the price to see if it was worthwhile or not. Last but not least, we analyzed our users’ reviews, both the positive and the negative.
Using A Custom Linux App
Mullvad and Private Internet Access are only the VPN services we know of to offer full Linux GUI clients that work on a Chromebook .
Several VPN services, however, offer command-line clients for Linux that work on a Chromebook.
These are often not much more than simple custom setup scripts for the Linux OpenVPN app , but it is handy to have all the server locations pre-imported and setup with a single script. And sometimes they include additional features.
Chrome OS uses a Debian Linux container, so there is a very good chance that any VPN app designed for Debian, Ubuntu, or Mint will work just fine on a Chromebook .
Setup instructions for custom Linux apps vary depending on the provider, so there is no point trying to outline a general setup guide here. Fortunately, each provider should offer detailed instructions on its website.
One thing to note is that if you download files using the Chrome browser, then you will need to drag them into the Linux > in Files to make them accessible from the Linux Terminal.
Files downloaded using a Linux browser will automatically be stored in the Linux Downloads folder.

Why Do You Need A VPN For Chromebook
VPN plays a very important role in protecting your Chromebook from various threats to which you are exposed while you are online. While Google is renowned for collecting browsing data, you wont be having any kind of privacy.
So when you install VPN in the chromebook device, it assigns a new IP address to the Chromebook device which hides your personal identities and private details such as location, passwords, hardware & software details. So no one can monitor what you do online.
For example, If you use your Chromebook on public WiFi networks, youre susceptible to phishing attempts, hackers and other attacks that can intercept your traffic and steal your data.
Even at home, youre still at risk of data and privacy leaks. Your bank details and passwords can easily be stolen if your traffic isnt encrypted.
Using Openvpn For Linux
If your provider doesn’t have a dedicated Linux app, then never fear! The official OpenVPN app for Linux will work with any valid .ovpn files you care to throw at it.
1. Sign up for a VPN service
Almost all reputable VPN services allow manual OpenVPN setup using .ovpn files. It’s always worth checking before buying, though.
2. Download its .ovpn files
If doing this in the regular Chrome browser, then dont forget to drag the .ovpn fines to your Linux Downloads folder. This is unnecessary if you downloaded them using a Linux browser: sudo apt install firefox-esr.
Either way, it will make launching the VPN easier if you rename the files to something snappy and quick to type in.
3. Install OpenVPN
Launch Terminal from the Apps Launcher and enter:
sudo apt-get update
4. CD into your Downloads folder and enter:
And that should do it. You should be connected to your chosen VPNserver.
To disconnect, simply close the Terminal window that OpenVPN is running in. You can remove OpenVPN with the following command:
sudo apt-get remove openvpn

Provides Security From Malicious Attacks
VPN also protects you from potential threats such as DDoS , prying eyes and hackers. The VPN routes your traffic through an encrypted, invisible tunnel.
Even if a hacker happens to intercept your private data, they cant use it because the encryption makes your data completely unreadable. This also means that the government, your ISP, and other trackers cant see what youre doing online.

Why You Need To Use A VPN With Kodi
Remember that if you use a Kodi add-on it makes sense to always have a VPN installed. This is because a lot of Kodi users are choosing to play system add-ons in order to access the latest entertainment content for free. Legal Kodi add-ons tend to have less content on them, so the attraction of seeing the latest films, shows, music, and sports is obvious!
However, if you use an illegal add-on to watch pirated or copyrighted content, then you might get in trouble for copyright infringement. Thats why we recommend using a VPN. If you view Kodi content using a VPN, your identity will be kept secret and you will be anonymous. This is because the VPN will change your IP address, masking your location and identity. Additionally, a VPN service will also encrypt the data that passes between your device and the server where the content you are accessing is located.
You will also find a VPN useful for accessing geographically restricted streaming platforms through Kodi. It will let you access Netflix, Hulu, and many other resources.

What Is A Chromebook VPN
VPN stands for virtual private network. You can say a VPN serves as the middle-man in your connection to the internet. It allows you to connect your device to a computer/server in the country of your choice and have all web traffic go through the said distant machine before reaching your device. Its as if you were controlling a computer remotely. This masks your identity, location, and other private details you might not want to share.

How To Set Up A VPN For Chromebook
There are a few ways in which you can set up a VPN for Chromebook, and we have a dedicated guide on how to set up a VPN on Chromebook to help you. The easiest and best way to install a VPN on your Chromebook and ensure you have the best protection is by installing ExpressVPNs own Chromebook app.
Start Using A VPN On A Chromebook
Once you have a functioning VPN configuration, you can easily access it again. Just click your user icon in the lower right, and then click the VPN Disconnected option. All of the connections you’ve manually configured will appear under the OpenVPN/L2TP section. If you have VPN Android apps or Chrome OS apps, they’ll appear in their respective sections. To create a new configuration, just click the blue plus sign in the section you want.
To switch on the VPN, just select it from the list. That goes for Android VPN apps and Chrome OS apps, too. You can click on it a second time to configure that specific connection. Or you can open the Settings menu, navigate to the Network section, and click the caret next to the connection you want to configure.
Each connection has its own host of options. Toggles let you prefer a particular network, or always connect to the network when your Chromebook is in use. These are great options, and I recommend you use them.
You can also update the server information for a given connection, simply by overwriting the server hostname. That’s handy, in case the server you were using is deactivated by your VPN company. You can change the username and password for the connection by clicking the Configure button. Note that you can’t change the provider type . To do that, you’ll have to create a new connection.
If one of your configurations doesn’t work or simply doesn’t suit you anymore, just click the Forget button.

In the box that opens, select the certificate file and click Open. When prompted, enter the password for your certificate. If you don’t know the password, contact your network administrator. The certificate will open and install itself on your Chrome device.
Test Your Chromebook VPN
Once you have installed a VPN on your Chromebook, it’s important that you make sure that it is working correctly. You dont need to do it all the time, but when you first start using a new VPN service, it’s always a good idea to check that it’s working correctly and that you are not suffering any IP leaks.
This can be easily done using our handy new IP leak testing tool. Just remember that if you are testing a Linux VPN connection, then you will need to do it using a Linux browser.
