How to Set Up and Use a VPN with Remote Desktop Manager
  • Log in to your router admin panel through a web browser
  • Search the VPN area and analyze the available protocols
  • For the OpenVPN Option
  • Create the Username and Password you need to connect to the server PC
  • Activate the VPN server
  • Find out your public IP address from Google and note it down

If you are using a dynamic IP address, register for a dynamic DNS server and use it for remote desktop and VPN connections. You may also need to acquire a static IP address from your internet service provider.

Still, you can configure a secondary IP address and convert it to static. Without a static IP address, your devices will not connect remotely to the PC when the IP address changes.

Change The Port Number Or Set Up Multiple Pcs For Remote Access

If you have multiple PCs on your local network that you want to be able to access remotely over the internetor if you have one PC but want to change the default port used for Remote Desktopyou have a little more work cut out for you. Setting up a VPN is still your better option here in terms of ease of setup and security, but there is a way to do it through port forwarding if you want. The trick is that youll need to dive into the Registry on each PC to change the TCP port number it uses to listen for Remote Desktop traffic. You then forward ports on the router to each of the PCs individually using the port numbers you set up for them. You can also use this trick even if you have just one PC and want to change away from the default, commonly-used port number. This is arguably a bit more secure than than leaving the default port open.

Before you dive into the Registry, you should also note that some routers allow you to listen for traffic on one external port number, but then forward traffic to a different port number and PC internally. For example, you could have your router listen for traffic coming from the internet on a port number like 55,000 and then forward that traffic to a specific PC on your local network. Using this method, you wouldnt have to change the ports each PC uses in the Registry. You could do it all on your router. So, check whether your router supports this first. If it does, skip the Registry part of these instructions.

A Virtual Private Network is a connection you can set up between 2 computers that establishes a secure path between a computer with public Internet access and a computer that is connected to a private network such as the network at your place of business. To set up a VPN, you will need to gather specific criteria for each computer such as each computer’s Internet Protocol address or domain name, a username and password, and any other applicable authentication settings. You will then enter this information into the VPN configuration settings menu of your computer. This guide provides you with instructions for setting up a VPN in Windows 7 computers and Macintosh computers with Operating System X 10.6.

What Are The Downsides Of Setting Up Your VPN Server

Like in every method, creating and using your VPN server has several disadvantages.

    • If you lack the necessary technical and networking knowledge, this can be a difficult task.
    • If you miss out on any essential security setting, your devices can be vulnerable to cyber threats.
    • If you do not upgrade your system with the latest security patches, ideally, your VPN connection is not as secure as most commercial VPNs that automatically update.
    • Your home network can have slower upload and download speeds. Therefore, the VPN connection can become slower.
    • You cannot guarantee that your ISP is not spying on you since there is only encrypted traffic between the VPN server and the client.

Use A VPN Router With The Built

As described above, although it is cheaper, turning your own computer into a VPN server can be pretty cumbersome. In that case, another alternative solution is to use a VPN router with an integrated VPN server setup capability. It is good if the router you buy supports a more secure VPN protocol other than PPTP, like the OpenVPN protocol.

However, this can be expensive because if your current router does not have that capability, you may have to buy a new one.

Setting up your VPN router is relatively easy. In summary, the following are the essential steps you need to follow to set up your VPN router as a VPN server.

    VPN Router Setup

  • Launch a browser window from your PC connected to the routers network
  • Enter the router IP address in the search to login into your router
  • Enter the username and password of your router and login into it.
  • Go to the Settings page and select VPN Service or setup page.
  • Enable the VPN service by selecting the checkbox and apply
  • VPN Client Setup

Once you have enabled VPN in the router, download and unzip the VPN configuration files for the clients from the router control panel, then copy the files to the client devices. Finally, you can connect to the VPN from client devices.

Use Remote Desktop Software For Windows

    PacketiX Desktop VPN

Although using a Dedicated VPN IP address and port forwarding to connect to RDP is an option for some people, this method is not suitable for Windows Home Edition users. The solution is to use a third party remote desktop program instead.

The good news is that using third party software to connect to your computer remotely is actually considered more secure than using Windows RDP. This is because RDP was not intended for accessing a computer desktop via the internet and was not developed with security in mind. As a result, there is no real protection against brute force attacks, and hackers are known to use bots to search the net for RDP servers to exploit.

If you want to connect to your home computers desktop remotely we recommend the following programs:

  • GoToMyPC – A superb remote desktop tool that is fantastic for both home and business users. The only drawback is that it is a touch pricey.
  • Zoho Assist – An excellent remote desktop tool that has a free tier and premium plans depending on your needs.
  • RemotePC – A secure cloud based remote access tool with robust AES 256 encryption.
  • AnyDesk – Free for personal non-commercial use.
  • TeamViewer – Free for personal non-commercial use.
  • Chrome Remote Desktop – Free to use.
  • You can download any of these easy to use remote desktop clients by following the links above. To use them, simply install the software on both of your machines and follow the instructions provided by the services.

As with most things within IT, each answer is different depending on how you are doing each action. In this case, the answer will vary depending on how you are working remotely and what method you are using to remote in.

When working remotely, there are multiple options to choose from, however, we will focus on the most used. These tend to be the traditional RDP with a remote connection through a secure VPN or more utilising a 3rd party software application such as TeamViewer or Logmein. How To Setup VPN For Rdp And Why

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) using an SSL VPN

Get answers from your peersJoin Now

This is a noob question for server management I needed to ask because I’m confused in here. We have a Server 2016 setup which we need to logon via RDP from time to time.

This is a DB server which serves for ERP but sometimes we need RDP to install or configure softwares so I need to have RDP open. I changed the default RDP port as a security measure but of course as many people pointed out in here it doesn’t do much for port scanners. As another resort, poeple tend to advice using a VPN to access RDP or at least using an RD Gateway.

Here’s my question coming to mind then how does an RDG provide extra security over RDP itself? Because as far as I can see both require a user name and a password to login. So how does it make a difference as long as your IP address is comprimised? I mean a hijaker could brute force the RDG too, couldn’t he? Or the only crux in using RDG is using SSL certificates? If that’s the case, why wouldn’t self-signed certificates be useful?

Secondly the same question for VPN if I setup VPN server on this server so how does it make a difference than leaving RDP open? I mean brute force is brute force whether for VPN or for RDP. What am I missing in here?

    • ROM

VPN adds another layer of security and prevents someone from using a port scanner to find the port of your RDP server.

If you have 2FA on your VPN your RDP server is much more secure behind a VPN.
