Configuring VPN + RDM
There are two simple ways to configure a VPN in RDM: 1) you can link an active session to a VPN entry or 2) you can change the configuration of an active session. While both options work, as a best practice we recommend #1.
#1. Linking an Active Session to a VPN
If you already have a VPN entry in RDM, you can quickly link it to multiple sessions. This also makes managing your VPN much easier, since you only need to keep one entry updated. Here is what to do:
Edit the session you want to link your VPN entry to. Start by clicking on the VPN/SSH/Gatewayside menu, then click on the Typedropdown menu, and select Session.
In the Settingstab, click on the Sessiondropdown menu and select your VPN entry.
And thatâs it! Your session is now linked to your VPN entry. The next time you launch your session, it will automatically use your defined VPN.

Enable Port Forwarding On Your Router
Port forwarding simply maps the port on your router’s IP address to the port and IP address of the PC you want to access.

Before you map the port you’ll need the following:
PC internal IP address: Look in Settings > Network & Internet > Status > View your network properties. Find the network configuration with an “Operational” status and then get the IPv4 address.
Your public IP address . There are many ways to find this – you can search for “my IP” or view the Wi-Fi network properties .
Port number being mapped. In most cases this is 3389 – that’s the default port used by Remote Desktop connections.
Admin access to your router.
You’re opening your PC up to the internet, which is not recommended. If you must, make sure you have a strong password set for your PC. It is preferable to use a VPN.
After you map the port, you’ll be able to connect to your host PC from outside the local network by connecting to the public IP address of your router .
You might also consider setting up a static IP address on your PC so the internal IP address doesn’t change. If you do that, then the router’s port forwarding will always point to the correct IP address.

Is VPN Same As Remote Access
Even though VPN and remote desktop have some similarities, they are both totally different in terms of their use. In a remote desktop , you control an entire computer from your desk whereas, in a VPN, you will see a network connection. It is not possible to have full control over a local computer from a remote location with VPN.
What Tool Is Best For You
So we have shown that VPNs and remote desktop sharing solutions offer different advantages and disadvantages for remote support and remote access functions. Depending on your applications and the type of support needed, you may want to use one or the other. If you need additional security or compliance features, you may want to augment or replace these technologies with even more purpose-built tools such as privileged access management or vendor privileged access management to fully secure the remote support connection.
While VPN and remote desktop sharing tools work great for their intended purposesthey are not secure or efficient tools for third-party remote access. Configure VPN Connection On A Client Pc

- Type VPN settings then press Enter on your keyboard

Connection name to any display name.
