Getting Started With A VPN
Once you’ve settled on a service, the first thing to do is to download the company’s app. There’s usually a Downloads page for this on the VPN service’s website. Go ahead and download the apps for your mobile devices as well: You’ll want to protect as many of your devices as you can. If the VPN service you’re considering doesn’t offer an app for the devices you use, consider finding a different service.
We have found that when releasing VPNs for Mac, companies occasionally have different versions available in the Mac App Store and on the company website. This appears to be for compliance with restrictions imposed by Apple. Figuring out which will work for you can be tricky, so be sure to read the company’s documentation carefully.
Once you’ve installed the apps, you’re usually prompted to enter your login information. In most cases, this is the username and password you created when you signed up for the service. Some companies, such as IVPN, Mullvad, and ExpressVPN have unusual login systems that provide customers with more privacy but can be confusing at first. Be sure to read the instructions carefully.
Once you’re logged in, your VPN app usually connects to the VPN server closest to your current location. That’s done to provide better speeds when using the VPN, as performance degrades the farther the VPN server is from your actual location. That’s it: Your information is now being securely tunneled to the VPN server.
Configure The VPN Client By Using Intune
To use Intune to deploy Windows 10 Remote Access Always On VPN profiles, you can configure the ProfileXML CSP node by using the VPN profile you created in the section Create the ProfileXML configuration files, or you can use the base EAP XML sample provided below.

Intune now uses Azure AD groups. If Azure AD Connect synced the VPN Users group from on-premises to Azure AD, and users are assigned to the VPN Users group, you are ready to proceed.
Create the VPN device configuration policy to configure the Windows 10 client computers for all users added to the group. Since the Intune template provides VPN parameters, only copy the < EapHostConfig> < /EapHostConfig> portion of the VPN_ProfileXML file.
Configure The VPN Client By Using Configuration Manager
In Configuration Manager, you can deploy VPN profiles by using the ProfileXML CSP node, just like you did in Windows PowerShell. Here, you use the VPN_Profile.ps1 Windows PowerShell script that you created in the section Create the ProfileXML configuration files.
To use Configuration Manager to deploy a Remote Access Always On VPN profile to Windows 10 client computers, you must start by creating a group of machines or users to whom you deploy the profile. In this scenario, create a user group to deploy the configuration script.

Anyconnect VPN Connectivity Options
The AnyConnect client provides many options for automatically connecting, reconnecting, or disconnecting VPN sessions. These options provide a convenient way for your users to connect to your VPN, and they also support your network security requirements.
Starting and Restarting AnyConnect Connections
Configure VPN Connection Servers to provide the names and addresses of the secure gateways your users will manually connect to.

Renegotiating and Maintaining the AnyConnect Connection
You can limit how long the ASA keeps an AnyConnect VPN connection available to the user even with no activity. If a VPN session goes idle, you can terminate the connection or re-negotiate the connection.
Best Practices:
Set Client DPD to 30 seconds .
Set Server DPD to 300 seconds .
Set Rekey, for both SSL and IPsec to 1 hour .
Terminating an AnyConnect Connection
Terminating an AnyConnect connection requires the user to re-authenticate their endpoint to the secure gateway and create a new VPN connection.
The following connection parameters terminate the VPN session based on timeouts:

What A VPN Does And Does Not Do
As with any security tool, it’s important to understand the limitations of a VPN. After all, you wouldn’t expect a Kevlar vest to save you from falling out of an airplane or a parachute to stop a bullet.
When you switch on a VPN, your traffic is routed through an encrypted tunnel to a server operated by the VPN company. That means that your ISP and anything connected to your router won’t be able to see your web traffic. From the VPN’s server, your traffic exits onto the public internet.
Because your traffic appears to come from the VPN’s server, your actual IP address is effectively hidden. That’s important, because IP addresses are distributed geographically and can be used to find your rough location. This can come in handy if you want to spoof your location. By connecting to a VPN server in London, you can make it appear as if you were accessing the internet from the UK.

Create A Package Containing The Profilexml Configuration Script
Host the script VPN_Profile.ps1 on a network share that the site server computer account can access.
In the Configuration Manager console, open Software Library\Application Management\Packages.
On the Home ribbon, in the Create group, click Create Package to start the Create Package and Program Wizard.
On the Package page, complete the following steps:
a. In Name, type Windows 10 Always On VPN Profile.
b. Select the This package contains source files check box, and click Browse.
c. In the Set Source Folder dialog box, click Browse, select the file share containing VPN_Profile.ps1, and click OK.Make sure you select a network path, not a local path. In other words, the path should be something like \fileserver\vpnscript, not c:\vpnscript.
Click Next.
On the Program Type page, click Next.
On the Standard Program page, complete the following steps:
a. In Name, type VPN Profile Script.
b. In Command line, type PowerShell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File “VPN_Profile.ps1”.
c. In Run mode, click Run with administrative rights.
d. Click Next.
On the Requirements page, complete the following steps:
a. Select This program can run only on specified platforms.
b. Select the All Windows 10 and All Windows 10 check boxes.
c. In Estimated disk space, type 1.
d. In Maximum allowed run time , type 15.
e. Click Next.
On the Summary page, click Next.
On the Completion page, click Close.
With the package and program created, you need to deploy it to the VPN Users group.

Find Out Your Openvpn Login Credentials
Your OpenVPN username and password are different to your ProtonVPN account username or password. To find them, log in to account.protonvpn.com and go to Account Username OpenVPN / IKEv2 username.

Sync The Always On VPN Configuration Policy With Intune
To test the configuration policy, sign in to a Windows 10 client computer as the user you added to the Always On VPN Users group, and then sync with Intune.
On the Start menu, click Settings.
In Settings, click Accounts, and click Access work or school.
Click the MDM profile, and click Info.
Click Sync to force an Intune policy evaluation and retrieval.
Close Settings. After synchronization, you see the VPN profile available on the computer.

Adding A VPN Connection
Its time to add a VPN connection. First click on the button at the top that says Add a VPN connection.
A blue screen will appear. Here you can enter the details of your VPN provider. In some countries you can choose a VPN provider from a number of standard providers, but this step-by-step guide focuses only on the Windows option.
Give the VPN connection a recognizable name under Connection name. You could, for example, opt for VPN connection work if you only need it for work-related activities.
Under Server name or address, enter the IP address or server URL of the VPN server. This information is provided by the provider of the connection, e.g. your boss.
Under VPN type, choose the VPN protocol you wish to use. In most cases, youll be able to select the Automatic option here. For more information about VPN protocols, please read our article on this topic.
Under Type of sign-in info you can specify the way you wish to log in. In most cases, this involves using a user name and password. Alternatives include logging in with a smartcard or certificate.
Under User name and Password, fill in the necessary login details.
Note: it is safest not to make the computer remember your sign-in info if youre using a public computer. Only choose to save the data if your computer cant be used by strangers and is well protected!
Once youve finished entering all the necessary data, click Save.
Configure Advanced Settings For Mobile VPN With Ssl
You can configure these settings on the Advanced tab:
- Authentication and encryption
- Timers
- DNS and WINS
The authentication and encryption settings changed to stronger defaults in Fireware v12.0. Settings for Blowfish, MD5, and DES were removed.
Authentication
Select an authentication method for the connection: SHA-1, SHA-256, or SHA-512. We recommend the SHA-2 variants, SHA-256 and SHA-512, which are stronger than SHA-1.
Encryption
Select an algorithm to encrypt the traffic: 3DES, AES , AES , or AES . In Fireware v12.2 or higher, you can also select AES-GCM , AES-GCM , or AES-GCM . We recommend AES encryption. For the best performance, choose a 128-bit AES variant. For the strongest encryption, choose a 256-bit AES variant.

Data channel
Select the protocol and port that Mobile VPN with SSL uses to send data after a VPN connection is established. You can use the TCP or UDP protocol. The default protocol and port for Mobile VPN with SSL is TCP port 443. This is also the standard protocol and port for HTTPS traffic. You can use port 443 for Mobile VPN with SSL as long as you do not use the same external IP address in an incoming HTTPS policy.

How To Set Up A VPN Connection On Windows 11
To set up a Windows 11 VPN connection, use these steps:
Click the VPN page from the right side.
In the “VPN connections” setting, click the Add VPN button.
In the “Server name or address” setting, enter the address of the VPN server for example, vpnserver.com or 122.122.122.122.
Use the “Type of sign-in info” drop-down menu and select the authentication method.
Quick note: This option will depend on the VPN provider settings.
Once you complete the steps, you can connect to the VPN service from the Settings app or Taskbar.
How To Set Up Openvpn On Your Mobile Device
Were devoting a special section to configuring OpenVPN because walks the line between using your VPN providers client app and doing a manual VPN setup based on the protocols your phone supports. As we mentioned above, OpenVPN is not natively supported on any mobile platform, so you do need to install a third-party software application on your mobile device.
Before you do, make sure that your VPN provider supports the OpenVPN protocol . From your providers website, you will need to download the needed OpenVPN configuration files for the servers you want to your mobile device. Make sure you know where the files are saved. You may be able to download all of your providers configuration files in one ZIP file or just download the specific ones you want.
The next step is to download the official OpenVPN Connect application to your mobile device either OpenVPN Connect for Android or OpenVPN Connect for iOS. During setup, you will need to import the configuration files and enter the login credentials for your VPN service. The OpenVPN website provides setup instructions for both iOS and Android, and your VPN provider probably offers these instructions as well.

Connect To The Openvpn Server
You can now click Connect to start the OpenVPN connection.
If your configureation file is an archive file, like .zip, you can switch server at the cog icon.
Once connected, you should find your IP address, data received/sent.
Note that you can’t running VPN Client and Server at the same time, and also can’t running OpenVPN Client and WireGuard Client at the same time.
