Pptp VPN For Ios With At&t Uverse And Dd
Posted onJune 17, 2011 6 minute read
Wandering into public or semi-public wireless networks makes me nervous because I know how my network traffic can be easily watched, and because I’m a geek with control issues I’m even more nervous when using devices that I can’t get to the insides of . One way to tamp down my concerns is to use a Virtual Private Network to tunnel the device’s network connection through the public wireless network to a trusted end-point, but most of those options require a subscription to a VPN service or a VPN installed in a corporate network. I thought about using one of the open source VPN implementations with an Amazon EC2 instance, but it isn’t possible with the EC2 network configuration judging from the comments on the Amazon Web Services support forums. Just before I lost hope, though, I saw a reference to using the open source DD-WRT consumer router firmware to do this. After plugging away at it for an hour or so, I made it work with my home router, a AT&T U-verse internet connection, and iOS devices. It wasn’t easy, so I’m documenting the steps here in case I need to set this up again.
Configuring Your At&t Gateway For Your Own Router
The gateway that AT&T provides doesnt have a bridge mode, but it has another feature thats an effective substitute.
But first, we have to take care of its networking.
It defaults to a 192.168.1.0/24 network and an address of 192.168.1.254. If your router doesnt live on 192.168.1, youre golden. But it seems like at least 50% of consumer routers also live on that network. If yours does, youll have to reconfigure the AT&T router so you dont get a conflict.
Log in to the AT&T gateway. The password is on the underside of your router. Its probably just a long number. Navigate to Settings > LAN > DHCP. Change the range to 172.16.0.0. Then scroll down to the end and click;Save.
On some models of AT&T gateway, the setting may be in Home Network > Subnets & DHCP.
Ive been told that on some newer AT&T gateways, you have to enter a full network range rather than choosing a network from a menu. If thats the case with yours, enter 172.16.0.1 as the start address and 172.31.255.255 as the end.
Youll lose your connection at this point. This is a pretty good time to plug in your third-party router. Then either unplug your laptops network cable and plug it back in, or renew your DHCP lease with the command sequence;ipconfig /release followed by;ipconfig /renew . Now youre ready to reconnect. Point your browser at 172.16.0.1 and log back in.
Best Router For At&t Uverse
Our pick for the best router for AT&T Uverse is the Netgear Nighthawk R7000-100PAS. This is a great all-around router, including security features, great speeds, and functionality.
Design
The R7000 supplies you with parental controls, which can give you another layer of protection if you need to monitor what kind of internet activity your network is experiencing. You can lock down the security of your device based on which device is connected.
Another advantage this router has is the OpenVPN Connect App. This allows you to have access to the network remotely, allowing you to see what is going on within the network and alter any settings that might need it. You might need to see who is on what device and what the device is up to. You can also adjust the settings when you are not at home, which could be a big advantage.
The Nighthawk R7000-100PAS is a horizontal router with three antennas that can be turned toward the devices that need them the most. This design can be harder to conceal than vertical designs. The design also includes a USB 3.0 port to allow you to plug in any external storage device directly to the router.
Performance
The R7000 provides you with a dynamic QoS that will allow you to prioritize which devices should get the best bandwidth, ensuring that the devices that cannot afford to have buffering or signal loss will have a reliable connection. This is especially important if you do any kind of heavy streaming within your network.

You need speed to support fast video streams, but you also need encryption, a good zero-logging policy, along with strong device support and security. Those features cant always be found in abundant quantities, which is why we collected the most important features below, followed by recommended VPN products for any AT&T device.

Cisco : : Serialization Delay From The Wire / Interface Onto Router / Switch Backplane / Fabric
So the delay is introduced getting data onto the wire. However say there are two hops to the destination server, each hop is via equal connectivity speeds say 1G interlinks. Question:Is there serialization delay FROM the wire/interface onto router/switch backplane/fabric?Is the serialization delay from backplace/nic back onto the wire to the next hop? – Or if using a switch with equal in/output speed transmitted without serialization? What happens with a routed interface vs switched? Most articles discuss the latency induced between the much higher OS/NIC interface out to the wire, but not the switch/router serialization that does or doesn’t occur.

Router Stopped Detecting Wire Connected From Poe Adapter
I have a router setup that worked for me for months, suddenly, it stopped detecting the wire connected from the POE adapter. When the wire is directly connected to my pc, the connection works and i have internet. But when thru the router, the WAN Light is not even lit.Btw, just for checking purposes, I tried connecting a wire from my pc to the router wan port, and the WAN light lits up.
Setting Up The At&t U
Since the D-Link router is behind the U-verse residential gateway, we need to punch a couple holes through its firewall to allow downstream connections from the iOS devices to reach the D-Link router. Specifically, one needs to forward ports 1723/TCP and 1723/UDP through the residential gateway firewall to the internal D-Link router. To do this:
The U-verse residential gateway will now pass everything inbound on ports 1723/TCP and 1723/UDP to the D-Link router. You’re done with the residential gateway setup now.

Wire Router Randomly Disconnects
i am a gamer and i rely on the internet to do some buisiness as well, a few months ago my router started randomly dropping me from my connection and then 10 seconds later the connection is back up. now i know alot about computers and cant figure out why this is happening. it seems that the problem starts with skype. when i play some games while in skype i will get dropped from skype and from my game, then skype reconects and i can reconect to the game but 5 minutes later it happens again. i have at&t and am using a 2701HG-B, my donwload speed is a max of 3mbps and usualy is around 2.7mbps. i have contacted at&t multiple times, i have reset my router multiple times but it hasnt fixed the problem. at&t stated that i am demanding too much bandwith from my connection. i feel that this info totally crap. when im on with just 1 of my many devices at 3am and all i am doing is playing a game and talking on skype and it disconnects, there is no way i am demanding too much.

At&t Blocking Websites And Streaming Services
AT&T does block websites, but apart from blocks stemming from users not abiding the rules of the company, they are done in an odd manner. For no apparent reason, websites are blocked based on the IP addresses they are associated with. Our best guess is that a conservation of resources and reducing congestion is again the aim here. But then again, AT&Ts or any ISPs throttling and blocking activity happens because they attract a great number of customers with promises of internet quality they cannot even support in the first place. In our opinion, this is an effective way of thinking about blocks: the ISP does not have a beef with you, in fact it has a beef with itself, in that it bit more beef than it can chew, in return for easy extra profit. Therefore, AT&T does block websites; from the viewpoint of VPN though, this too is irrelevant, since such a network is explicitly designed to bypass restrictions.
Enjoy a 75% discount on your VPN account with NordVPN by opting for the three-year plan. The total price of $107.55 may seem quite a lot, but its the same as paying only $2.99 per month, which is almost ten dollars less than the regular monthly cost.
Number Of Connected Devices

So many of our home networks need to be able to support several devices. This is a feature that you will want to take a look at when shopping for your new router.
Think about your smartphone, tablets, and computers that you will be using. You should also think about whether your home uses IOTs like refrigerators and doorbells. Count up the types of devices so that you will know what you are looking for.

Linksys Wireless Router : : Ea2700 Ping To Access Point Through Wire Varies From 1 To 8 Ms
I purchased Linksys EA2700. For the moment it is being used as an access point for a wireless network and an Ethernet switch. 4 laptops are being connected to it through the wireless network, the wire connects one computer and a separate ADSL modem . As a result minimal ping to any of the devices in wireless network is 8 ms â the best result and sometimes rises to 20 ms. Consequently when working with local network resources one suffers from speed decrease. Ping to the access point through the wire varies from 1 to 8 ms. These delays are quite strange as even on cheaper routers ping does not rise above 2 ms . Is it normal for the device?
Configuring The Ios Device
The iOS device was pretty straight forward :
Now when you connect to a public network, before starting any applications that will access the internet, go into the Settings app and near the top will be a choice to turn on the VPN. Give it about five or six seconds to make the connection, and you’ll then see a blue VPN icon in the status bar at the top next to the WiFi icon.

Setting Up Rvs4000 Behind A Uverse Motorola Router
Need some help please.
Trying to set up the Cisco VPN router for remote acces to our network.
We have ATT Uverse DSL and it is a Motorola Router, i think NGT 510.
the Uverse router has very limited setup options.
I cannot set it up as a bridge.
The only thing I can figure out is to set the ip passthrough option to the VPN router.
We have a static ip address for our internet service.
I have tried several setup and connection options, but cannot get it to work.
So 2 questions:
1.; How to physically connect the routers and network devices?
2.; How to setup both routers to play nice.
Thank!
Frank,
First you will need to change the default LAN IP address of the RVS4000 to something other than 192.168.1.x since usually all other routers have this common LAN address so lets say your U-verse is 192.168.1.x we can change the RVS4000 to 192.168.5.x router will reboot. Now since the U-verse is your gateway router its best to change the RVS4000 in router mode but you need to be able to add a static router in your U-Verse modem/router.
Static route should look like this
Destination IP 192.168.5.0
Destination sub 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.25
Now since your U-verse is your gateway router vpn isnt going to work. RVS4000 needs to be the gateway router for IPSec vpn. I will give you the four ports needed to forward to RVS4000 for IPSec and most likely tunnel might connect but traffic wont correctly cross. IPSec ports are 443-500-4500-60443.

Enable Dmzplus Or Ip Passthrough On The At&t Gateway
Depending on whether you have a PACE modem or an Arris modem, you will have either of the two options in your gateway settings.
To enable this, simply navigate to Firewall in the gateway settings.
For Pace gateways, simply choose your Netgear Nighthawk from the list of devices connected to your internet under Applications, pinholes, and DMZ.
It should be the only wired connection on the list. After selecting the Nighthawk, click on allow all applications to enable DMZplus mode.
For Arris BGW gateways, you need to enable the option of IP Passthrough.
It is also located under Firewall. You will now be prompted to enter the access code of your device.
This must be printed on your modem. Once you enter the access code, select DHCP Fixed and click on your Netgear Nighthawk router.
Save your settings to enable IP Passthrough.
The point of this step is to bridge your gateway to make it function solely as a modem and not as a WiFi router.
Keep in mind that IP Passthrough and DMZplus while being similar to a bridge mode is not exactly the same.
