How To Setup VPN On Home Router

Don't Miss

Check What Subnet Your Router Is On

How to Setup VPN on Your Router (easy, step-by-step tutorial!)

Each device on your home network has a local IP address that identifies its location on your home network. Usually, IP addresses will start with 192.168.x.y and your router is the gateway, which is usually located at 192.168.x.1.

X is the subnet that your router is located on.

Were going to need to put each router on a separate subnet so they dont hand out the same IP address to different devices. To do that, we first have to check what the IP and subnet of your primary router is. The easiest way to do that is:

  • Connect to your routers wireless network
  • Run cmd.exe from the start menu
  • Type ipconfig on the command line and hit enter
  • Look for the line that says Default Gateway.. Thats your routers IP
  • The second to last set of numbers is the subnet
  • The Default Gateway is the routers local IP address

Most consumer routers use as the default gateway if that IP is available on your network. Dont worry if yours isnt, you dont need to change it. Just remember the IP address for later.

    Manually Flashed VPN Routers

When: Upgrading your current router and looking for the cheapest way to improve it.

Why: You want a VPN router, you arent interested in buying a new device, and youre confident in your abilities to perform the setup.

What to look for: Helpful guides, information on your router and whether it supports advanced firmware.

Flashing your router is a challenging task that requires some research, but its not as hard or risky as it seems. If youd rather make your router VPN-ready by yourself without having to spend a small fortune on a new one, this is the way to go.

As mentioned, flashing is short for installing advanced firmware on your router. The two most popular kinds are DD-WRT and Tomato both have their strong sides.

Heres a summary of what you need to know about these two pieces of firmware. DD-WRT is the more versatile option, offering support for 80+ router brands including entry-level models of vendors like TP-Link, Tenda, and D-Link.

Tomato is compatible with a much more limited selection of routers, but usually works better with OpenVPN, has unique features and is widely considered to have a cleaner interface than DD-WRT.

Ultimately, your choice of firmware will depend on the router you have. Whatever the case, our advice is to make sure your router is suitable for the task by checking the DD-WRT database and/or lists of routers that support Tomato BEFORE you start the flashing process. Otherwise, theres a big risk of messing up your router beyond repair.

How To Get A VPN Router

Typically, you have two choices when it comes to VPN routers either getting a device with built-in VPN support, or upgrading your own if it allows that . This results in three main VPN router types VPN-compatible routers, pre-configured routers, and manually flashed routers.

Heres an overview of each type, as well as some useful pointers:

How to setup VPN on home router. Tutorial

    1. Choosing a VPN provider

First of all, youll have to choose your VPN provider, preferably NordVPN. If youre planning to set it up on a router, you can ignore info like the maximum number of available connections and focus on support. Some of them have router apps, some of them support many router models and have easy to understand setup guides. Dont skimp on your providers reputation and additional features. You want to make sure that your provider will actually make you safe.

    2. Choosing a router

More likely than not, you already have a router. If you feel like making a fresh setup, you can potentially look into the best VPN routers, which are optimized for VPNs. In some cases, DD-WRT or Tomato routers should be enough. In other cases, its entirely possible to buy pre-configured routers with your VPN providers settings. This neglects the art of setting it up but dramatically saves your time.

    3. Connecting the VPN router

First of all, youre going to need to log in to your router. If it was set up by your ISP and you just plugged it in, chances are that it doesnt even have a password. If it does, it might be written on a sticker on your router.

    4. Configure your router

    5. Optional: Flashing your VPN router

There are different protocols available when using a VPN. However, the fastest and most trusted of them all is the OpenVPN protocol. The OpenVPN protocol is open source, meaning that its always being improved on and tested by a large community, and any flaws can be more easily detected and resolved. Private Internet Access Great VPN For A Router

Which VPN Is The Best For Your Router

If you invest top dollar in a state-of-the-art router, you should do the same with your VPN. Dont be surprised that your connection doesnt live up to your expectations if youre using a VPN service that has slow servers on the other side of the globe, cannot unblock Netflix, and doesnt allow torrenting.

Speed and security are the top two criteria to consider when deciding on a VPN for your router. While speed often correlates with the number of servers and locations, its also the quality of the infrastructure that makes the difference.

Speaking of security, the country where a VPN resides is essential because some of those are members of the Five, Nine, or Fourteen Eyes Alliance, sharing intelligence data between themselves. Having a clean reputation is also essential some VPNs have already been caught cooperating with governmental institutions. Others clearly state that they do not offer a no-logs policy and are willing to disclose your personal data to third parties.

The quality of Customer Support shouldnt be your last consideration, either. We suggest choosing those VPN providers that offer 24/7 live support. There might be times when your connection drops for no apparent reason and works only without a VPN. Submitting a ticket and waiting for the response from another time zone can often mean youre done for the day while calling a helpline or starting a live chat can solve your issue within minutes.

C Flash Router With New VPN Firmware

Making A Dedicated VPN Home Router Using A Regular Netgear Router Private Internet Access PIA

The last option, and the most complicated, is to flash your router with new firmware. To clarify, the term flashing means to install new firmware firmware is the Operating System within your router that determines what its capabilities and/or limitations are.

To enable your router to function as a VPN client, you need to flash it with new firmware. The two most common and established types of firmware out there are DD-WRT and Tomato.

DD-WRT and Tomato are open source, third-party firmware that are available online for free, and each has its own pros and cons. But first, lets see what they have in common. Both DD-WRT and Tomato can:

    • Extend your wireless range
    • Disable manufacturer backdoors, among others

    Here is where they differ:

DD-WRT is more accessible and available on more devices than Tomato. As far as exclusive features, DD-WRT allows users to adjust the strength of their Wi-Fi signal, manage quality-of-service settings to prioritize specific types of traffic, access your home network from afar, and more.

Tomato offers better bandwidth monitoring options, permits up to two VPN servers to run at the same time, and offers a more user-friendly interface. It also connects better to various VPN service providers, but is not supported on as many routers. To see an in-depth comparison of the two types of firmware, you can view Flashrouters article here.

Install A VPN Firmware On Your Router

If you already have a router and it is not VPN-enabled, you may flash it with VPN firmware, meaning that you may install an operating system that can deal with VPN connections. This is a DIY option, and it is slightly more difficult.

There most well-known and versatile types of VPN firmware available on the market are DD-WRT and Tomato.

DD-WRT is third-party firmware that has been around for years and it will work with numerous different types of routers.

The DD-WRT option is very appealing as it is free, robust, and adds a large amount of versatility to all types and sizes of routers, including a VPN client mode. DD-WRT has been installed and tested without a problem on routers ranging from newer flagship routers like the Netgear R8000 to the venerable old Linksys WRT54GL.

Tomato offers a more user-friendly interface and better bandwidth monitoring options. However, it is not supported on as many routers.

    Accessing Your Favorite Content

When it comes to streaming, using a VPN can be beneficial in many ways: watching sports games that arent available in your home country, looking for your favorite shows, or accessing websites that geoblock users. A VPN masks your IP address so you can pretend to be from another country and access geo-blocked content while sitting on your couch with a blanket. And NordVPN is definitely the best VPN for streaming.
