If you don’t want to use a VPN anymore, or if you just want to remove a server from the list, you can disconnect or altogether remove it. There is a VPN button for quick on and off located in the Windows 10 action center , but we’ll go through the entire process, which includes completely removing a VPN from your system.

  • Right-click the Start button.
  • Click Remove again to confirm.

  • That’s it! The VPN you configured should now be removed. You can always add a server again using the first set of instructions.

How To Set Up A VPN In Windows 10

A VPN is an enormously powerful addition to your security arsenal. Sure, it’s easier to use a dedicated VPN app, but if you want to configure a VPN manually in Windows 10, this guide has you covered.

When you use a virtual private network, or VPN, you can rest assured that spies and advertisers aren’t sniffing around your traffic, and it won’t be intercepted by ne’er-do-wells, even if they’re on the same network as you. While VPN companies provide apps to make setting up their products a breeze, that’s not the only approach you can take. In fact, you can manually configure Windows 10 to use a VPN, as we’ll explainalthough you’ll still need a subscription to a VPN service.

How To Set Up A VPN In Windows

VPN technology lets a computer using a public internet connection join a private network by way of a secure tunnel between that machine and the network. This protects the data from being seen or tampered with by bad actors. The two most common use cases are consumer VPN services that allow individuals to surf privately from home or a public setting, and business-oriented solutions that allow employees to securely connect to a corporate network remotely.

Now that so many people are thrust into working from home due to the coronoavirus pandemic, weve confirmed that this procedure is up-to-date and working as described. You may want to check out our guide on working from home as well, with tech tips and general setup considerations from our extensive personal experience in home offices.

For the most part, VPN connections are handled by custom software such as the many consumer VPN services weve reviewed, or by third-party generic software such as the OpenVPN client or Cisco AnyConnect.

    Our Recommendation: Use A Third

This process might not seem too complicated, but remember youll have to do it for every new server you want to connect to. The VPN client doesnt offer a kill switch, split tunneling or any of the premium features weve come to associate with third-party services. Theres also no easy way to replicate this experience on other devices, aside from downloading the providers regular app.

With that in mind, theres no good reason for most people to persist with Windows 10s clunky built-in VPN client. The key exception here is if youre running Windows 10 in S mode, which limits downloadable apps to those available from the Microsoft Store. No third-party VPN services can be installed, so this is a decent workaround.

Create A Profile In The Windows 10 VPN Client

Here’s how to set up and connect to a VPN through the Windows 10 VPN client:

    1. On your Windows 10 desktop, right-click the Start button and select Settings from the menu that appears.

    2. In the new window that pops up, click Network & Internet then select VPN from the list of connection options on the right side of the screen.

    3. Click Add a VPN connection.

    4. This will take you to a configuration screen. Under VPN provider, click the dropdown menu and select the option that says Windows .

    5. In the Connection name field, type out the name you’d like to give this particular connection. Try to create one that you’ll easily recognize as a VPN connection. If, for example, you’re using ExpressVPN and want this connection to be the one you use to connect to a New York server, name the connection something like “ExpressVPN, New York server.”

    6. In the Server name or address field, type the actual address of the server you’re connecting to. Your VPN service will be able to provide this information. Generally it will look like a website URL, with an alphanumeric string of five or six characters followed by the name of the VPN service you’re using.

    7. In the VPN type dropdown, you’ll be asked to choose a protocol like I mentioned above. Select whichever one your VPN service uses.

Can’t Setup VPN On Windows 10 Pro

We’re having a problem setting up one of our computers with a PPTP client. I have set it up on my laptop and it is working fine, so please don’t send me a link on how to set up a VPN.

OK, so “settings”, “Network & Internet”, from the left panel “VPN”, “add a VPN” and one gets the VPN setup menu. When I do it on my laptop, I select the VPN Provider “Window built-in” which is the only option. In the next place I enter a name for the connection ie “VPN to work”, although we have tried several others. Now in the next place I enter the IP address of the VPN server. At this point the remaining data entry locations are open and the VPN type allows me to select PPTP, enter a username and then password. All is fine!!

On the other computer I proceeded as above but the VPN Provider selection area does not seem to hold the “Windows built-in” selection and then after entering the name and IP address, the rest of the entry areas are greyed out/locked, ie no data can be entered.

Both computers are Windows 10 Pro, fully updated.

What is the issue and how do we get it fixed?
