How to Setup a Free VPN on Windows 10 PC Correctly in 2021

While you do need to set up any VPN you care to use on your Windows 10 computer, going through a manual set up process is entirely optional. All the VPN services we have tested thus far offer Windows applications that will handle the configuration for you. The apps also act as gateways to all of the VPN’s features, such as switching between VPN servers, choosing different VPN protocols, and so on.

But although VPN apps have made setup a snap, some of you may prefer to do things the old-fashioned way and have Windows handle it for you. Or maybe you just like to tinker with your system. Or you might simply prefer not to have another app on your computer. Just know that if you get frustrated with the steps outlined below, there are apps out there that can take care of this for you.

Why Use A VPN With Windows 11

The reasons you’d use a VPN with Windows 11 are the same as why you’d use a VPN at any time: to boost your security and privacy. Once connected to a VPN service, the internet traffic from your machine transmits through an encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN provider’s servers.

It stops people prying on your data, allows you to access geo-restricted content, and access private networks outside your own with relative ease.

There are a lot of VPN myths floating about, like VPNs are only for pro users or that you only need a VPN to hide “questionable” online activity. However, that’s not the case, and you can use a VPN as and when you want.

Moreover, it’s easier than ever to use a VPN service, with almost all VPN providers offering a desktop or mobile solution to make connecting simple.

But, you don’t have to use their software. Instead, you can configure your VPN within Windows 11 directly, cutting out the VPN software in the process. There are pros and cons to this, which we’ll arrive at in a moment, but first, read on to learn how to set up a VPN service in Windows 11.

How To Set Up Openvpn On Windows 10

OpenVPN is widely regarded as the most secure VPN encryption protocol. This is because it has been audited regularly and is known to be secure against eavesdroppers.

The easiest way to connect to your VPN using OpenVPN is to use the VPNs custom client for Windows. Most VPNs provide OpenVPN from inside their custom Windows clients. To make sure OpenVPN is the selected encryption protocol:

  • Run your VPNs software.

  • Select encryption protocols.

  • Now select either OpenVPN TCP or OpenVPN UDP .

    Set Up A VPN Manually

You dont have to go with a VPN service if youd rather DIY. First, youll need to create, purchase, or otherwise have access to a VPN server. For example, you may already have a VPN to connect to your companys internal network, or you can set one up with a mainstream cloud computing service. Microsoft doesn’t provide a VPN within Windows by default, so one way or another, youll have to get your own.

Once you have your server details, youll be able to manually set up your VPN on your computer. While its possible to do this safely and well and many people do you risk leaking your personal data should you make a mistake. Youre also missing out on a few key VPN security features, including:

    • Worldwide server coverage: When you DIY, youve got just one server to use. You wont be able to hop around the world in search of optimal speeds. If choosing the location of your server or optimizing connection speeds is important to you, we recommend using a commercial VPN, like our own AVG Secure VPN.

    • Many VPNs allow multiple users to share the same IP address, which makes it even harder for other parties online to identify and track users. Youll be the only user of your VPN, so you wont gain this benefit.

    • OpenVPN support: Microsoft doesnt offer native support for OpenVPN in Windows, one of the most popular and secure protocols currently available. To access it, youll need to either download and install the OpenVPN client or simply use a commercial VPN providers app.

How To Set Up & Use Windows 10s Built

How To Setup a VPN in Windows 10

The built-in Windows 10 VPN service is a rather interesting feature and one that comes with a few limitations. These limitations may make the process not very ideal for what you need a VPN for. As previously stated, a bit of tech knowledge is almost essential to move forward.

To get things rolling, it will take some network and port configuring on your end. The ability to forward ports from your router will be necessary. You also run the risk of exposing Windows and the port you choose for the server to malicious entry.

To help avoid this, youll want to consider using a different port than the default one used for PPTP. A strong password is also a must and should contain a mix of numbers, letters, and special characters.

    The VPN Server

Creating a Windows 10 VPN server will take you into areas of which you may not be familiar.

    • Begin by typing ncpa.cpl into the taskbar search and opening Network Connections. It may appear as a Control Panel item.
    • With the Network Connections window opened, press the Alt key on your keyboard to reveal the menu tabs.
    • Click the File tab to pull up the menu, and then select New Incoming Connection.
    • Choose which user accounts you want to provide access to the VPN connection.
    • From a security perspective, it may be wise to create a completely new, limited user account. This way you can protect your primary user account from potential exposure. To do this, click Add someone and fill out the username and password fields.

    Start The L2tp Connection

The name of the VPN connection is the destination name you used when you configured the L2TP connection on the client computer. The user name and password refers to one of the users you added to the L2TP-Users group. For more information, see About L2TP User Authentication.

Before you begin, make sure the client computer has an active connection to the Internet.

  • In the Windows notification area , click the Network icon.A list of available networks and VPNs appears.
  • Select the VPN connection. Click Connect. The Connect page appears.
  • Configuring L2tp/ipsec Or Pptp

OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPSec are newer technologies that create secure VPN connections. L2TP/IPSec and PPTP are older and widely considered less secure. In fact, many VPN companies include notes on their tutorials for these protocols indicating that users should not, if they can help it, use them.

That said, because of their age these protocols are widely supported. If nothing else works, you could give them a try, but we’re not going to detail their workings here, because we don’t recommend them.

    | 10 Jul 2020

Getting up and running with a VPN in Windows is very easy. VPNs offer a host of benefits, especially in this day and age of online tracking and ever-increasing threats from criminals wanting to steal your identity and money.

They encrypt your connection to the internet, hiding your real location, helping to mask your identity and offering security on public Wi-Fi. Besides this, they allow you to unblock stuff on the web that is normally blocked in your region.

You may or may not know that Windows has VPN settings built in. This means you can enter the details of your VPN service directly into the operating system and use Windows’ own settings to turn the VPN connection on and off.

However, there’s an easier and better way which also gives you more features and – in some cases – better security. Simply download the app for Windows 10 from your VPN provider as this approach requires no technical knowledge.

First, though, you have to sign up to a VPN provider to access the service: Windows merely facilitates this connection.

While there are free VPN services, most people will be better off with a paid-for VPN service. This is because free services are usually very limited in their choice of servers, speed or have monthly usage caps.

We’ll be using ExpressVPN here which is our pick of the premium VPN services, but we also recommend checking out NordVPN as well which is an excellent all-round service that is more affordable.

How To Install A VPN On Windows 81 Or Windows 7

How To Set Up a VPN Connection in Windows 10

Official support for Windows 7 is now officially over, which means that using Windows 7 is insecure and could open you up to cyber-threats such as malware and hacking. Windows 8.1 has extended support until Jan 2023. However, that support is not available to most home users. This is because mainstream support for Windows 8.1 ended in 2018.

If you are using a deprecated version of Windows, it is essential that you upgrade as soon as possible. Failure to do so could open you up to exploits and vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to target your system, steal your data, and infect you with dangerous malware.

For this reason, we strongly urge you not to find ways to install a VPN on an out-of-date Windows system and instead, update your system properly to Windows 10 so that it is secure against the most recent threats. Once you have Windows 10 installed, you can use this guide to install a VPN safely.
