VPN apps or VPN client applications are the way to go for most VPN users. They are simple to install, and you may connect to the VPN in a matter of minutes.

VPN apps are available for download on the VPN providers website, or you may find official app stores corresponding to your device. You may proceed as follows:

  • Create a free trial or subscribe to the VPN service.
  • After installing the VPN app on your device, open the app, select a location or server, and click on the Connect button.
  • Once the VPN tunnel has been created, open Firefox to browse anonymously and safely.
  • All the Internet traffic that comes and goes to/from Firefox will be encrypted and passed through VPN servers. Your real IP address will be protected, and region-locked content would be accessible.

The manual setup consists of creating a VPN tunnel from the OS level directly, without the use of a VPN client app. The following tutorials help you get started with the manual VPN setup:

Whats The Difference Between A VPN Add

VPN add-ons are lightweight and allow you to browse the internet safely. They are very easy to use and protect you from IP and DNS leaks while also unblocking your favorite streaming platforms. However, they lack some of the features from the apps, such as the kill switch and split tunneling.

A VPN add-on will only tunnel your browser traffic, whereas a standalone app allows you to choose which apps and websites to route through the VPN. The VPNs on this list are compatible with the most popular operating systems, so you can choose one and test it yourself.

Firefox Relay Wants To Use Email Aliases To Keep Your Details Safe Online

ByAnthony Spadaforalast updated 16 November 2021

Sign up for new online accounts without giving away your real email address to third parties

When you use your real email address while shopping for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals online, hundreds if not thousands of third parties will then have access to it which is why Mozilla has launched a new free service to provide users with email aliases instead.

Firefox Relay is a privacy-first and free product that hides your real email address to help further protect your identity online. By pointing your browser to relay.firefox.com and configuring the service, you’ll get five email aliases that you can use whenever you sign-up for an online account.

Mozilla has designed Firefox Relay to send and forward incoming emails from your alias email addresses to your primary email address and the company doesn’t’ read or keep any of the content in your messages. All email messages are also deleted from its servers after they’ve been sent and delivered to users.

In addition to providing users with five free email aliases and up to 150kb attachments, Mozilla has even added labels to Firefox Relay that can be used to add information like an account name or a description so users know which sites they are using a particular alias for. These labels can also be synced across devices so you can keep track of your alias email address on your smartphone as well as on your computer.

Make Sure You Understand What A VPN Doesnt Do

Set-up Surfshark VPN on your Firefox browser | Tutorial

A VPN provides an important security link by protecting your private data before it travels over the internet, and it also conceals your IP address, helping to protect your identity and location. It wont, however, prevent you from things like clicking on suspicious links, downloading malware or being victimized by email fraud. You still need to practice good habits to stay safe online.

Test Run Your VPN For Firefox

After installing a VPN it is uber important to test the VPN solution throughly, especially if you have chosen to use a VPN app.

For VPN add-ons, the first test is to check your public IP address with an IP locator website . If the IP checker website still shows your real IP address, there is something wrong with the VPN browser add-on. Try to refresh the locator website. When your real IP is no longer shown, then you know the add-on does its job.

Additionally, you should test the Firefox VPN add-on for WebRTC leaks.

    Try Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access is the go-to VPN when you want to remain anonymous on the web. If your current Firefox VPN client has issues, maybe its time to switch to one that supports most major browsers and platforms. Additionally, PIA has a team of friendly support staff always there to help with any issues.

That being said, youll probably not need their assistance, as PIA has been thoroughly tested and there are no compatibility issues between it and with Mozilla Firefox.

By using PIA, you can encrypt your data to make sure it is unreadable in case its ever intercepted. Also, you can privately browse the web by installing the Firefox extension, or if you are on mobile, their dedicated private browser.

Moreover, you can set up your PIA client to always have certain apps work only in VPN mode. This can be easily done from the settings and it offers you per-app control over when you want to VPN to be active. This feature is something that most other VPN clients lack and it means that you set it up once and forget it.

What Do You Get For Your Money With Mozilla

    VPN for Firefox

A Mozilla VPN subscription lets you use up to five devices simultaneously. That’s the average across the services we’ve reviewed, but a growing number of services are doing away with this limitation entirely. Avira Phantom VPN, Encrypt.me VPN, Ghostery Midnight, IPVanish VPN, Editors’ Choice winner Surfshark VPN, and Windscribe VPN place no limit on the number of simultaneous connections.

Editors’ Note: Encrypt.me and IPVanish VPN are owned by J2 Global, which also owns PCMag’s publisher Ziff Davis.

Given Mozilla VPN’s association with Mullvad VPN, it’s surprising to find that it has few additional features. For example, Mozilla VPN does not provide push-button access to the Tor Anonymization network. A VPN isn’t required to access Tor, which is a free service, but it is convenient. Mozilla VPN also does not support multi-hop VPN connections, which route your web traffic through a second VPN server to ensure that your data is secure.

Mozilla VPN supports split tunneling in its Windows and Android apps. This lets you define which apps send their traffic through the VPN connection and which do not. It’s useful for high-bandwidth, but low-security activities like streaming media or gaming. Notably, Editors’ Choice winners NordVPN and ProtonVPN are the only VPNs we’ve reviewed that offer multi-hop, split tunneling, and access to Tor.

Use Official Extensions And Avoid Free Apps

We only recommend that you download an official Firefox browser extension, one published by the VPN company itself. You can find lots of so-called free VPNs and proxies in the app store. Theyll promise you all the benefits of a real VPN, but theyll mostly be concerned with gathering and selling your personal data at best, or installing who knows what malware on your computer, or both.

We discuss this more in our proxy vs VPN guide, where we point out the risks of free apps and services that rely on user data to pay the bills. It just goes to show that when something is free, you are usually the product.

Setting Up And Using The VPN

So, its time to use your VPN. To connect to another country, simply open the application, browse through the list of the countries available, and click on the one that you need. Once you dont need to be connected to a VPN anymore, click the Disconnect button and your connection will be back to normal.

In case you want to tweak a feature or two , youll need to open the Settings menu. There, youll be able to see all the extra features offered by your VPN.

It’s always a good idea to enable a kill switch. That way, your Internet will be shut down each time the connection to a VPN server drops. This can protect your online safety from accidental IP address leaks.

Hands On With Mozilla VPN On Android

To test Mozilla’s Android VPN, we used a Samsung A71 running Android 11. The apps interface is very simple, with a lot of whitespace surrounding a hot pink globe above a connection toggle centered at the top of the screen. After choosing a VPN city location from a list below the connection toggle, the top half of the app screen turns purple and teal, signifying a successful connection. When you tap the icon in the top left corner of the colorful connection box, you see your current IP address, and a line graph and numbers showing your current upload and download speeds.

Mozilla VPNs Android app is light on features. When you tap the gear on the top right side of the connection interface, and then tap App Permissions, you can choose to enable split tunneling for specific apps on the device. Unlike Bitdefender VPN, the app does not have an Auto-Connect feature or an internet Kill Switch.

We tested the split tunneling feature on Android by first noting our IP address, indicating that the Chrome browser should skip the VPN, and then activating Mozilla VPN. When we checked our IP address in Chrome again, the location didn’t change, signaling that the split tunneling was successful.

To test the reliability of the VPN, we navigated to YouTube.com and watched a few videos while still connected to the server in Madrid. The videos all loaded quickly and played at a high resolution without any issues.
