How Does A VPN Work
Connecting to a VPN is generally quite simple. After subscribing to a VPN provider, you download and install the VPN software. You then select a server you want to connect to and the VPN will do the rest.
When the connection has been established, the following will happen to your data:
The VPN application runs in the background of your computer, tablet, or smartphone. You can access the internet as you normally would and wont notice anything different save for the fact that youll be able to get around online restrictions.
What Are The Downsides Of Setting Up Your VPN Server
Like in every method, creating and using your VPN server has several disadvantages.
- If you lack the necessary technical and networking knowledge, this can be a difficult task.
- If you miss out on any essential security setting, your devices can be vulnerable to cyber threats.
- If you do not upgrade your system with the latest security patches, ideally, your VPN connection is not as secure as most commercial VPNs that automatically update.
- Your home network can have slower upload and download speeds. Therefore, the VPN connection can become slower.
- You cannot guarantee that your ISP is not spying on you since there is only encrypted traffic between the VPN server and the client.

Securely Using Public Wi
Public places are jungles filled with Wi-Fi, and some of them are poisonous. Anybody can set up a fake public Wi-Fi and hack your device.
Using a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi is a must. It doesn’t matter if you just check your Facebook, buy a new sweater online, or use Google Search in any of these cases your traffic can be intercepted. Turn on a VPN on your device and NordVPN will provide you with encryption to stay invisible from digital predators.

Can VPN See My Traffic
No, they cannot. The traffic you route to them appears just like regular traffic as it traverses their VPN server, all encryption that the VPN provides is stripped away. That means that everything that you send to an SSL protected site is still protected by the SSL encryption that the actual site provides.
Manually Flashing The Current Router

As in the second method, buying a VPN router can be expensive. But if you still need a VPN router without buying a new one, you can upgrade your current router by manually flashing it.
As flashing a router can be a tricky task, buy a pre-configured or pre-flashed router already flashed. But this option can be expensive.
First and foremost, toTo flash the router by yourself, you need to check if your router supports flash firmware like DD-WRT, OpenWRT, and Tomato. Then find out the instructions to follow on the firmware providers website.

How To Remotely Access Your Work Computer From Home Using VPN
The Covid-19 situation has unfortunately left many people unemployed. Others were lucky enough to be able to continue working from home. However, working remotely has brought with it many cybersecurity vulnerabilities, since employees were no longer in a relatively secure office environment.
Now, some say that this is business as usual for larger companies. After all, they can afford to provide the necessary tools for their employees to work remotely. Small businesses may have a harder time adjusting, however.
Fortunately, you dont need to break the bank to access your work computer from home without exposing company assets to cyber criminals. Virtual Private Networks are affordable cybersecurity options and are easy to operate. That means you dont need to worry about training costs, either.
Are you part of a small team? Or just self-employed and need to access some work files from your downtown office? Whatever your situation, heres what you need to know to get back on track.
What Is A VPN Server
VPN servers are a necessary part of the whole VPN thing. They do two things:
- Encrypt and decrypt the correspondence between you and the website/service.
- Hide your IP, making it look like youre connecting from the servers location.
Dont worry, everything has already been set up by your VPN provider you just have to choose the server when connecting.
An important part of VPN services is access to a variety of VPN servers around the world. For example, Surfshark has 3200+ servers in 65 countries.
This means that, for example, a German user can easily connect to a VPN server in Germany or one in Australia .

What is a VPN?
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and is basically a private connection between your computer and any website or application. By setting up a VPN, you can change your IP location, encrypt your data, and access apps that are otherwise unavailable.
It protects all of your internet traffic, including emails, voice calls, videos, and music.
When Do You Use It?
There are many reasons to use a VPNboth overseas and at home. A VPN adds an extra layer of security on your computer.
While youre traveling, you often connect to public or semi-public Wi-Fi networks in places like airports, cafés, hotels, and train stations. Anyone on this same network can potentially grab your unencrypted datagoodbye usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers.
A VPN is essentially a private network that only you can access, so theres no risk of theft or a data breach.
A VPN also gets around service restrictions and censorship. Many governments block popular sites like Netflix, Facebook, or BBC to restrict access to services that are considered contrary to national interest. For example, if you want to update your status in China but discover Facebook is banned, your private network can bypass many of the government restrictions.

VPNs Aren’t Rocket Science

Too many of you aren’t using a VPN, and maybe that’s because they seem like arcane security tools. Fortunately, many providers have worked hard to make them friendly and easy to use. Most are now set-and-forget security tools, as they should be. A VPN is one of the best and easiest ways to guard your web traffic from, well, just about everyone.

If You Have Servers And Systems That Demand A Connection Back To The Office
Yours might be one of many organisations that have systems which require a remote connection back to the office. If this is the case, here are some options for you, as well as the pros and cons of each
Option 1: VPN ConnectionVirtual Private Networking connections have been around for years but have evolved significantly. Your VPN connection should terminate at the firewall/ router and use SSL encryption.Pros: – Relatively quick and easy to set up- Secure – Work from your desktop as usual Cons: – Many applications wont work very well over a VPN
How does it work?Firstly, its crucial that you dont allow VPN connections from any old machine as it could quite easily bring your entire company network down if its not properly checked and managed. Providing you are setting up the VPN on a company computer, then the steps in principle are as follows…1. Download your firewalls VPN client software – usually available for free from the vendors website .2. Install the software3. Enter your organisation’s public IP address
4. Enter your username and password and connect Once youre connected, shared network drives and other systems you might use should become available.

The Dangers Of Using A VPN On Home Computers For Work And What To Do Instead

As a security professional, I have the privilege of seeing a variety of decisions for security architectures, policies, implementations and technology over the last three decades. Some of the decisions by IT and security professionals are innovative, secure and even cutting-edge, while others are downright cringe-worthy and laden with potential risk. One security decision I’ve seen is allowing the installation of your organizations virtual private network software on an employees home computer for remote access.
While some security professionals may think of this as an acceptable practice, this policy is high risk with an undesirable attack vector when permitting access into your environment. For example, consider the following:
Lower Malware Defense
Home users are typically local administrators for their personal computers. They rarely create secondary standard user accounts for daily usage. This makes them more susceptible to malware that can take advantage of them. To that end, the vast majority of malware needs administrative rights to infect a system, and home users typically do not place any restrictions on their access for the simple fact of convenience. The older the home computer operating system, the worse the operating system is at defending against malware requiring administrative rights for exploiting the system.
Multiple Users
Lack Of Authority
Inability To Secure Host
Lack Of Protective Resources
Requirements For Setting Up An Office VPN
While there are dozens of VPN connection service providers out there, you will need a suitable VPN-enabled router installed in your office before you can create a virtual private network and connect to it.
VPN-enabled routers must have both wired and wireless connectivity, support up to 10 connections, and have built-in VPN features.
