Select your VPN service in the list at the left.
If theres a Configuration pop-up menu, click it, then choose a configuration.
There may be only one configuration available.
Why Mac Owners Should Use VPNs
macOS is generally considered a fairly secure operating system, but there are still many reasons for Mac owners to employ VPNs. Macs may be less susceptible to malware than PCs, but theyre just as much at risk when it comes to online threats and obstacles:
- Spying on your online activity by governments, corporations, and hackers
- Attacks that intercept, modify, or divert your internet connection
- Geo-locked content such as videos and content that can only be watched from certain countries
- Websites and apps that track your location and device address
- Web censorship by governments and corporations
The number one reason to use a VPN on Mac is to improve privacy. Your Macs security and privacy only extend to the data that is stored on your Macbook. Once data is passed over the internet, it may no longer be secure or private. Your internet service provider or a hacker on a public wi-fi network could snoop on your online activity. This information could be used against you in many ways, such as your ISP throttling your bandwidth as punishment for using P2P applications, or the hacker conducting a man-in-the-middle attack to dump a malware payload onto your computer.
Authenticate Your Account And Connect
Once youve entered your connection details, youll need to enter your login details in order to access your VPN service. By clicking on the button Authentication Settings, youll be sent to the following screen:
Choose the option Username from the dropdown menu, then fill in the login information you received when you set up your VPN account.
After filling in your username and password, you can select the option Show VPN status in menu bar at the bottom of the screen. This will make the VPN status icon pop up at the top of your screen, so you can more easily adjust your settings. This can be very useful if you wish to quickly connect to your VPN network or switch between VPN services at a later point.
Finally, to create the VPN connection, click Connect. You have now successfully configured your VPN on MacOS!

Why Do I Need Strongvpn
Safely Connect to Public Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi hotspots are as dangerous as they are popular. Theyre almost always free, making them a common hangout for hackers, snoopers, and cybercriminals. And unfortunately, due to the open nature of hotspots, any user with a bit of tech-savviness can monitor all the trafc that passes over the network. This means your sensitive information, including logins, browser history, and personal records, is vulnerable when youre connected.
Not to fear, though, as StrongVPN eliminates this public Wi-Fi problem. When you enable StrongVPN during your hotspot connections, all of your online activity is shielded through encryption. This allows you to enjoy all the convenience of public Wi-Fi without the risk.
Protect Your IP Address
While there are several ways to identify you online, one of the most popular is the IP address. Your IP address is a unique code assigned to you by your ISP. This code can be traced across websites and apps, then back to your physical location. Unfortunately, some of that tracking can be malicious.
With IP address protection from StrongVPN, however, you can surf the web securely. When you establish a secure connection with a StrongVPN server, it masks your IP address. Your new IP address will match your selected VPN server location. This alters your visible online presence and allows you to appear as though youre accessing the web from another region entirely.

How Much Will A Free VPN Impact My Macs Speed
It will lower your speeds quite a bit more than a low-cost premium VPN will. Free VPNs offer a limited number of servers that are often overcrowded. The more users on a server, the slower the speeds tend to be. Some free VPNs throttle your bandwidth, which slows your connection down even more. This is done to encourage you to upgrade to a paid plan.
The fastest free VPN on our list was still around 63% slower than ExpressVPN on average. If youre concerned about speed, then its best to try a low-cost premium VPN that comes with a money-back guarantee. Either that or look for a paid VPN service that offers a free trial without limiting its service, like CyberGhosts.

Do Macs Have Built In VPN
Kind of. Macs do indeed have the L2TP/IPSec and IKEv2 VPN protocols built-in that you can turn on any time for extra protection on your Mac. To turn it on, you need to head to your Network settings and choose to add a VPN using one of those protocols.
Of course, that won’t help with the other VPN uses we’ve outlined on this page , but is handy to know if you’re particularly conscious of your Mac’s privacy.
Install A VPN Manually On Mac Os
You can manually install a VPN using the built-in VPN client on macOS. The Mac OS VPN client supports the PPTP, IKEv2, and L2TIP/IPsec VPN protocols. But first, you need access to a VPN server that youve either created, bought, or have access to.
Heres how to manually install a VPN on Mac:
On your Mac, click the Apple menu and select System Preferences…. In the menu, click Network.
On the lower-left of the screen, click the Add button, then click the Interface pop-up and choose VPN. Click the VPN Type pop-up and choose what kind of VPN type you are setting up. Your VPN type depends on what kind of network youre connecting to. Name the VPN service and click Create.
Enter the Server Address and Account name. Click Authentication settings….
Now you need to enter the User Authentication information that you received from the network administrator to access the network server. After entering it, click OK.
If your network admin asks you to enter more information, nows the time to go back to the Network window, click Advanced and enter any additional information, like TCP/IP settings, DNS servers, and proxies. Then click OK.
On the Network window, click Apply, and then click OK.
If youve entered all information correctly, your Mac should now be connected to your network VPN.

Manually Configure VPN For Mac Pptp L2tp/ipsec Or Ikev2
macOS comes with a built-in VPN client that supports the PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, and IKEv2 VPN protocols. For reasons discussed in detail in VPN Encryption: The Complete Guide, I always recommend using an OpenVPN app instead. But IKEv2 is also a good option.
The big advantage of PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, and IKEv2 VPN connection is that they can be set up without the need to download a third party VPN app.
Go to System Preferences -> Network. Click the + button and select Interface: VPN in the pop-up dialog box.
Choose a VPN protocol and pick a name for the VPN connection .
Fill in server details with the settings provided by your chosen VPN service.
The built-in macOS VPN client does not feature any form of WebRTC leak protection, so if using a vulnerable browser you should disable WebRTC manually. Note that Safari does not use WebRTC and is therefore not vulnerable to WebRTC leaks. It is, however, closed source proprietary software.
