Avast Secureline VPN: How to secure your data from cybercrooks

Avast Secureline VPN is owned by Avast Software As well as developing the Avast VPN, the company also creates other products aimed at improving cybersecurity. Avast has developed a cloud-based artificial intelligence engine that gathers data from users and employs this to develop advanced security features.

The companys headquarters is in Prague, Czech Republic, and was founded in 1988 by Pavel Baudis Eduard Kucera. The two computer scientists met when at university in Czechoslovakia. They went on to develop anti-viral software that proved to be successful in removing viruses from systems.

The company is most famous for its anti-virus software, but the Avast Secureline VPN is becoming more and more popular. Avast Software now employs over 1,700 employees and has over 475 million global users around the world. The company is well-established in the world of cybersecurity, and its reliable reputation means that the Avast SecureLine VPN, which is available in 24 languages, has been popular with consumers all over the globe.

The internet is a fast-paced environment, with constant changes occurring. However, since Avast is constantly developing its security software thanks to its AI technology, its clear that the company will continue to adapt its VPN in order to provide a better quality service to users.

A Small Server Network

The global spread and coverage of the VPN server network is the most important factor here.

We also consider the number of city-level servers, plus how many IP addresses are maintained.

This rating does not directly contribute to the Overall Rating, but instead makes up a portion of the Security & Features rating.

Avast SecureLine has 700 servers across 35 countries. Its not a huge selection, and it focuses mostly on Europe and North America. But casual VPN users will be satisfied.

Avast SecureLine has 700 servers across 35 countries. Its not a huge selection.

Compared to VPNs like Private Internet Access or NordVPN , Avast is not close to competing.

But it should do the job for most, especially if youre based in Europe or the US. There arent many servers to cover Asia, Africa, or the Middle East.

Wed like to see more city-level servers made available. You can currently select city servers in the following countries:

  • Australia
  • UK
  • US

Thats not a lot, but at least it covers the largest countries like the US, Canada, and Russia.

A good way to avoid potential congestion would be for Avast to include server load information beside each server. This way the user can avoid servers with an unusually high usage at any given time.

Avast VPN Review: Faqs

Is Avast VPN safe in 2020?

Avast SecureLine VPN uses the industry-standard, 256-bit AES encryption on the OpenVPN protocol. When you connect to the VPN, all data is secured via OpenSSL libraries through UDP ports. Therefore, Avast VPN offers a good balance of speed and security. However, they do still store connection logs!

How much does Avast SecureLine VPN cost?

Avast SecureLine VPN offers three subscription plans to users. The 1-year plan costs $47.88, the 2-year plan costs $71.76, and the 3-year plan will set you behind by $107.64. The pricing is reasonable to say the least, but you could get better value for your money with other options!

Should I trust Avast VPN?

The antivirus product of Avast is famous worldwide for getting rid of potentially dangerous files, viruses, and malware. However, their SecureLine VPN product does not keep up with the reputation. Although it does offer good security and enable p2p torrenting, Avast VPN fails to unblock Netflix and stores connection logs!

How do I get rid of Avast SecureLine VPN?

If you want to remove Avast SecureLine VPN from your PC, simply right click on the Windows button, search for Add or remove programs, select the first option, scroll down, click on Avast SecureLine VPN, and hit the uninstall button. This will remove the VPN permanently from your system.

Avast Secureline VPN Review Conclusion

The Avast SecureLine VPN is a decent product that is hampered by a lot of externals. The VPN itself is user-friendly and provides strong security without any data leaks that we could find. But there is nothing here that makes it stand out from the crowd. The performance is mediocre, access to Netflix is marginal, and the server network is on the small side.

Now add in that the price is on the high side after the initial discount wears off, the 30-day refund would be a headache, the company keeps fairly extensive connection logs, and Avast was caught selling user data gathered by their antivirus apps.

While VPN itself works just fine, and Avast is a well-known name in the Internet security world, we cant really recommend this product.

Avast SecureLine VPN 2018 for Windows Review & Test

VPNs create a secure tunnel around your internet connection.

This encrypts your traffic so no one can bust inside. But more importantly, it creates a seal around your IP address and hides your true location.

That way, no government agency can get you in trouble for looking at what youre looking at while sitting where youre sitting.

Unfortunately, these connections arent always as secure as they seem to be.

For example, a DNS or WebRTC leak can cause your IP to be revealed without you even realizing it.

The good news is that we found the Avast Secureline connection to be leak-free.

IP leak test:

Thats the good news, though.

Which means theres also a little bad news we found when running these security tests.

But well tell you about those down below in the next section.

Is Avast Secureline VPN Good For Torrenting

Its nice that Avast SecureLine VPN is torrenting-friendly. The service even has dedicated P2P servers in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US. Keep in mind that the other servers dont support torrenting at all.

When testing how the VPN handles torrenting, I noticed that the servers had some stability issues. Even though the connection speeds could get pretty fast , the speed fluctuated a lot. On the other hand, its good to see that there doesnt seem to be any throttling in place.

Keep in mind that there are no extra features for torrenting, like Surfsharks Tor over VPN servers or NordVPNs integrated SOCKS5 proxy.

What Should I Do If Avast Secureline VPN Is Unable To Establish A Connection

If Avast SecureLine VPN is unable to establish a connection, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Check that your internet connection works when Avast SecureLine VPN is disconnected. If your internet connection isn’t working, check your network configuration.
  • Select a different Avast server location.
  • Disconnect other VPN services that may be running on your PC. If you are connected to another VPN, it is likely that Avast SecureLine VPN won’t work properly.
  • Restart your PC and try connecting to Avast SecureLine VPN again.
  • Check the configuration of your firewall. Firewall configurations vary according to the vendor/manufacturer. Consult the related documentation for information about running a VPN.
  • Confirm that your subscription is active. Open Avast SecureLine VPN, and go to â°Menu ⸠My subscriptions ⸠Subscriptions on this PC. Ensure Active appears next to Avast SecureLine VPN.

Customer Service For Avast Secureline VPN

Avast SecureLines customer service is only available in English and not open to its free users. The customer service and support do not have an excellent response, however.

If youre a free user trying to contact the customer support, youll be directed right back to the database and the Avast Forum, where other users will possibly be able to help you.

Avast Secureline VPN Speeds

Protect yourself online by using Avast SecureLine VPN

Avast SecureLine VPN advertises lightning-fast speeds on servers around the world. The VPN has no bandwidth limits and says that it supports speeds of up to 2 Gbits/s.

I tested the VPN to find out if the connection speeds are as fast as the company claims.

Before connecting to Avast SecureLine VPN, my average download speed was 67.38 Mbps.

I started by connecting to the server that the app identified for me as my Optimal Location. In my case, this was a server in Atlanta, USA.

My download speed was 66.78 Mbps:

Next, I connected to a server in the UK. My download speed was 66.99 Mbps:

A server in Germany gave me a download speed of 43.19 Mbps:

Across the world from my physical location, a server in Australia gave me a download speed of 2.32 Mbps:

Even with the slow Australian server, these are very impressive connection speeds.

Its common for your connection speed to decrease when you connect to a server far away from your physical location, so thats not necessarily an issue by itself.

The important thing is that I was able to stream and browse while connected to Avast SecureLine VPN without being slowed down.

Avast Secureline VPN Vs Cyberghost Which Is Better

In a surprising landslide, CyberGhost managed to beat Avast SecureLine VPN on almost all fronts.

The WireGuard tunneling protocol helped CyberGhost to emerge victorious in the speed competition. Plus, its server fleet is substantially larger. When it comes to pricing, both are almost identical, yet CyberGhost has two longer and cheaper plans.

Avast SecureLineVPN offers practically nothing substantial in terms of security, losing a point once again. And the fact that its logging more data than necessary certainly did not help. It was also behind CyberGhost in device compatibility and streaming.

CyberGhost is also the superior choice for torrenting and P2P. However, both VPNs did find common ground eventually, but only in their lack of success against Chinese censorship. Finally, Avast SecureLine VPN did manage to secure a point with their superior customer service.

Many of us are shocked that a huge company like Avast made a VPN that is so subpar. Youd think that their experience making antivirus software would give them an advantage. But for now, its hard to recommend Avast SecureLine VPN when CyberGhost does so many things better.

Perhaps you disagree with such a verdict? We can discuss it in the comments section below!

Streaming: Does Avast VPN Work With Netflix

Trying to unblock streaming platforms with Avast SecureLine VPN can be a hit or miss.

In my experience, the service can unblock Netflix, but it works only on certain libraries. When testing Avast VPN for this review, I got lucky and was able to unblock the US library of Netflix. However, it was a bit slow when it came to loading the site and its content . Interestingly, this didnt affect the picture quality and I had no buffering issues.

The VPN also unblocked the Canadian region of Netflix, even though it doesnt offer any Canadian servers that are optimized for streaming.

Now, the sad part: Avast failed to unblock DAZN, Hulu, BBC iPlayer and the UK region of Netflix. I also experienced slow loading with all of the servers I tried, even the ones that are relatively close to my location.

Its worth mentioning that Avast SecureLine VPN offers dedicated streaming servers in the US, the UK, and Germany. Unfortunately, only the US servers were able to do anything useful.

What Is Kill Switch

When Kill Switch is enabled, your internet connection is automatically blocked if Avast SecureLine VPN unexpectedly disconnects. This ensures that your real location is not exposed.

You can activate Kill Switch via â°Menu ⸠Settings ⸠VPN mode. Ensure Manual VPN Mode is selected, and tick the box next to Activate Kill Switch.

Google Android 8.0 and later

To activate Kill Switch, go to Settings ⸠Kill Switch. Follow the steps under How to turn on Kill Switch to enable this feature via your device settings.

Using Kill Switch alongside other Avast SecureLine VPN features can disrupt your internet access. After enabling Kill Switch, you may experience the following:

  • Trusted networks: When you connect to a trusted network, the VPN will disconnect and you will lose access to the internet.
  • Split Tunneling: Apps excluded from VPN connection via Split Tunneling will be unable to access the internet.
  • Auto Connect: If you have configured the VPN to disconnect each time you connect to cellular data, you will be unable to access the internet via cellular data.

To resolve the issues above, you need to either turn on the VPN or disable Kill Switch.

Does Avast VPN Keep Logs

Avast VPN secures claims to be a Zero logs provider. This claim is actually plausible, as the provider doesnt store personally identifiable information like your real IP address, the IP you connect to, your browsing activity or any other similar logs.

However, one of Avast VPN problems is that it stores connection and bandwidth logs, so it does know when you connect, how long you use the VPN and how much data do you use during that duration. Does this make the VPN unsafe? No, not at all.

While a true VPN shouldnt keep any kind of logs, not even connection or bandwidth logs, these types of logs are usually harmless and even if a VPN collects them it wont compromise your privacy in any major way.

Does Avast Secureline VPN Work In China

Sadly, Avast SecureLine VPN doesnt work in China at the time of writing this review. It simply doesnt support any of the advanced obfuscation techniques that are required to bypass the Great Firewall.

On the other hand, its Mimic protocol uses some unusual and seemingly random ports, so it has the potential of bypassing some simple port blocks. However, it doesnt seem to be designed with restricted networks and countries in mind.

If you truly need a VPN that works in China and other countries with internet censorship, you might want to get your hands on NordVPN or VyprVPNinstead.

Safe Practices But Too Basic

Avast SecureLine uses the best encryption cipher, AES-256, and it has a kill switch across all of its applications . This shows that it has a solid grasp of VPN security.

However, the VPN would benefit from advanced and customizable protection measures like a malware and ad blocker, DNS leak protection, double VPN , and Onion over VPN.

Avast is basic compared to many leading VPNs, which are moving to RAM-only servers, open source apps, and invisibility on LAN.

One neat feature is that Avast VPN allows you to use a free password leak detector, to check whether passwords associated with your email have been exposed by data leaks or hacks. All you have to do is insert an email.

Avast SecureLine has a free password leak detector.
