Connect To The Client
Every client is different, so there isnt a universal solution. If youre on Windows, youll need the Windows OpenVPN client.
On Android, you can open up your tarball, and transfer the keys onto your phone. Then, install the OpenVPN app. Open up the app, and plug in the information from your configuration file. Then select your keys.
On Linux, you need to install OpenVPN a lot like you did for the server.
$ sudo apt install openvpn
Then, change into /etc/openvpn, and unpack the tarball that you sent over.
$ cd /etc/openvpn$ sudo tar xJf /path/to/client.tar.xz
Rename the client file.
$ sudo mv client.ovpn client.conf
Do not start the client yet. It will fail. You need to enable port forwarding on your router first.
What VPNs Should I Use On My Router
If youre going to install a VPN on your router, youre first going to need to get yourself a VPN. These are our favorite choices that actually support being installed on a router:
- ExpressVPN This VPN server has the best combination of ease-of-use, really fast servers, and supports streaming media and torrenting, all for a cheap price. You can even buy a pre-configured router from them.
- StrongVPN not quite as easy to use as the others, but you can definitely use them for torrenting and streaming media.
Once youve got yourself a VPN, you can proceed to actually setting it up.
How Does A VPN Work On A Home Network
VPN: What is it y work? Whenever you access the Internet via a VPN, your IP address is hidden by the remote server that is configured to act as a proxy for the VPN. Therefore, if you surf online with a VPN, the server that handles your traffic becomes your data source. Your data is turned into gibberish by a VPN.

Whats A VPN And Why Would I Want To Do This
There are a myriad of reasons you might want to use a VPN to route your Internet traffic to a location other than the one youre actually using the Internet at. Before we dive into how to configure your router to use a VPN network lets run through a crash course on what a VPN is and why people use them .
Option Three: Make Your Own Dedicated VPN Server
You could also just use VPN server software on one of your own computers. Youll want to use a computer or device thats on all the time, thoughnot a desktop PC you turn off when you leave home.
Windows offers a built-in way to host VPNs, and Apples Server app also allows you to set up a VPN server. These arent the most powerful options around, though, and they can be a bit finicky to set up and get working right.
You can also install a third-party VPN serverlike OpenVPN. VPN servers are available for every operating system, from Windows to Mac to Linux. Youll just need to forward the appropriate ports from your router to the computer running the server software.
Theres also the option of rolling your own dedicated VPN device. You could take a Raspberry Pi and install OpenVPN server software, turning it into a lightweight, low-power VPN server. You could even install other server software on it and use it as a multi-purpose server.

How To Setup A VPN To Access Your Office Files Remotely
The reality of most small and medium sized non-profits is that many people work from home creating, editing, and updating data. As such, they need to connect to their work network from home in order to access files remotely, so they can maintain data accuracy and ensure the continuity of the organization.
The best solution that will allow organizations to access files remotely is to set-up a virtual private network .A VPN provides a cable-like connection via the Internet between a remote PC and your offices server. Its like taking a network cable at your office and walking home with it, pulling it through the streets, and plugging it into your laptop when you get home.
If you use a nonprofit CRM like Sumac, then you have access to your database from anywhere, but what if you want to connect to your work network from home?VPN software on your computer establishes a secure point-to-point tunnel through the Internet with your office to access files remotely. In order to have a virtual private network, you must have a router that is VPN enabled.
Why Do You Need Your Own VPN Server
We usually subscribe to a commercial VPN service and connect to one of their remote VPN servers closer to our location. Sometimes you may use a free VPN that may not be as secure as you expect and opt to subscribe to a paid VPN service for better privacy.
But, you do not necessarily need to pay for a VPN because you can also create your VPN server at your home. Then you can securely connect to your home network when you are away from home.
Setting up your VPN server is cheaper than paying for a premium VPN service, as most methods like hosting charge for the compute services you use. Moreover, such VPNs are disposable, meaning you can terminate your server after using it.
In addition, it will be more secure than commercial VPNs because you are not providing your data to an external service that could be keeping your access logs and sharing them with third parties for many purposes.
There are several ways you can achieve this. But, you need some technical knowledge on setting up a home VPN on your own, as it can be tricky.
In this guide, we will explain different ways you can create one. We will start with the most cost-effective method: turning your computer into a VPN server.

Why Do You Need A Remote Access VPN
Because it offers data security, as most of the employees work from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to use some form of protection . When an employee is sending an encrypted data file on the network, no one can intercept it.
A Remote Access VPN connection is important for employees using public Wi-Fi or local area networks, which usually have no encryption protocols. Plus, using a Remote Access VPN does not cost much and protects your companys data.
As we have mentioned a few VPNs for remote working above, jumpstarting your employees to use it takes no time. In this way, employees can travel and work anywhere they want without the risk of losing private data to hackers.

Weve covered several solutions for accessing your desktop remotely over the Internet. However, if you have a Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition of Windows, you already have the full Windows Remote Desktop installed. Home versions of Windows only have the remote desktop client for letting you connect to machines, but you need one of the pricier editions in order to connect to your PC. If youre using Remote Desktop, getting it set up for access over the internet isnt too difficult, but you will have to jump through a couple of hoops. Before you get started, enable Remote Desktop on the PC you want to access and make sure you can reach it from other computers on your local network.
Secure Home Network: Add Remote
In the era of work-from-home, it is rare of a need to access your home network from outside of your home. In the rarest occasion when we need something from your digital home, from accessing files in your NAS to viewing security camera footage, while being away, it is very inconvenient and less secure to get access from a public internet hotspot.
There are plenty of cloud-based P2P solutions for specific use cases and products, ranging from Synologys QuickConnect that allows you to access your Synology NAS anytime, anywhere, from any device and browser, to security cameras remote access feature. However, cloud-based solutions are vendor-specific, requiring different setups and apps for different use cases and it is as secure and the vendors security posture, which is usually not very high. The P2P communication may not be encrypted end-to-end using proper algorithm, making it possible for attackers on your public WiFi hotspot, on the internet, or at the compromised vendor cloud, to eavesdrop your access. In addition, a trip to the cloud is almost not the shortest path, especially you are not far away from home.
Given that I have an EdgeRouter and I do not want to run dedicated VPN access server or applications for some rare use cases, I went for what EdgeOS supports. EdgeOS supports PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN servers. So first, we need to decide on a protocol.

Remote Access VPN: Give Your Employees The Access They Need
Lets talk about remote access and, more specifically, your remote access VPN.
Your office has a network. On this network, you can access printers, connect to IT resources, transfer data, and more. Its secure and protects your team from sketchy websites.
But then you start hiring remote employees.
- cost the company less
- Theyre often more productive.
- And theyre happier!
Thats a win for everyone so offering remote work is a no-brainer.
The problem is, everyone on your team at the office uses the office network. It provides them with resources and the company with security. Remote workers arent there to log in so you need a remote access VPN.
A remote access VPN means your remote employees can log on to your office network from anywhere home, traveling, in transit that has access to the internet. They then have access to all your company resources, and somehow your data is *still* secure, even if theyre using public Wifi.

What Is A VPN
A VPN is a Virtual Private Network. Essentially, it allows you to use your computer as if you were on a network other than your own. As a simple example, lets say that you and your friend Steve really like playing Command and Conquer, a popular PC game from the 1990s. Command and Conquer can only be played in multiplayer if youre on the same network as your friend, thoughyou cant play over the internet, like you can with more modern games. However, you and Steve could set up a virtual network between your two homes so that, no matter how geographically distant you are, the computers treat each other as if theyre on the same network.
On a more serious note, this is the same technique used by businesses so that their employees laptops can access local resources even when the employee and their laptop are hundreds of miles away. All the laptops are connected to the corporate network via VPN so they all appear they were local.

Option One: Look For A Router That Support VPN Clients
While well do our best to recommend a router for you that will save you the headache of digging through the feature lists and terminology yourself, its best to know what terminology to look for when shopping so you end up with exactly the product you need.
The most important term is VPN client or VPN client mode. With no exception, you need a router that can function as a VPN client. Any mention of VPN server is no guarantee at all that the device also has a client mode and is completely irrelevant to our goals here.
Secondary terms to be aware of that are related, but not directly relevant, to VPN functionality are terms identifying types of VPN passthrough. Typically the firewall/Network Address Translation components of routers play very poorly with VPN protocols like PPTP, L2TP, and IPsec, and many routers have PPTP Pass-Through or similar terms listed under the VPN category in their marketing materials. Thats a nice feature and all, but we dont want any sort of pass-through, we want actual native VPN client support.
