What Does Norton VPN Do

Don't Miss

Unblocked: Netflix And Uktv

Getting Started | Norton Secure VPN

Norton Secure VPN could only unblock UKTV and Netflix, which is a little disappointing. The good part is that my connection was fast enough to stream shows on these platforms without lag or buffering. I tested Norton Secure VPN with Criminal Minds which is only available on Netflix US. However, my speeds experienced a significant decrease while I was connected to the VPN if I didnt have a fast connection in the first place, I would have experienced a lot of buffering.

Even though Netflix has strong geo-restrictions, Norton Secure VPN managed to get around them. I was impressed by this because this VPN is only intended to protect you from hackers and data leaks, not streaming content.

UKTV was very easy to unblock too. I connected to a UK server, and I had full, unlimited access to the platform. On top of that, the connection was great. I didnt experience slowdowns or changes in quality.

VPNs Are Part Of The New Digital Normal

Masks, social distancing, and vaccines are part of our new normal, and they help protect us from biological danger. Likewise, VPNs help protect our digital lives from cyber threats. It bears repeating that the more interconnected our lives become, the more we should develop safe online habits.

Youve probably heard for years that you shouldnt open untrusted email attachments or click on links. You may not have heard before, though, that you should be using a VPN to increase your online privacy.

Virtual Private Networks have enjoyed a somewhat niche popularitysomething that technology enthusiasts and privacy advocates used. Yet, with nearly the entire world needing to adapt online solutions due to the pandemic, VPNs have become more mainstream.

Since new strains of the virus are being discovered, our new normal shows no signs of stopping. Therefore, our online lifestyle is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Its vital that we take steps to stay safe, not only physically but virtually as well.

Norton Secure VPN allows you to configure various options from your Norton product.

VPN Ad And Tracker Blocker

Norton Secure VPN Complete Review with Pros and Cons

One nice bonus feature of the Norton Secure VPN is its built-in ad and tracker blocker. I spoke to Support about this and it appears to be basic ad and tracker blocking, without any customization or options besides the ability to turn it on or off.

Using a good ad blocker with your VPN is not a bad idea, since ads can be very invasive. We have tested a handful of VPN ad blockers. Some do well, but others are not very effective, as we noted in the Cyberghost VPN review.

Now that weve covered the pros, lets examine the cons of Norton Secure VPN.

Why Do You Need A VPN Service

Surfing the web or transacting on an unsecured Wi-Fi network means you could be exposing your private information and browsing habits. Thats why a VPN should be a must for anyone concerned about their online security and privacy.

Ever log into your online bank account in your hotel’s lobby? Or maybe you’ve paid your credit card bill online while sipping a mocha at your favorite coffee shop. If you’ve done this without first logging onto a VPN, you could have exposed your private information and browsing habits to hackers and cybercriminals.

Unless you are logged into a private Wi-Fi network that requires a password, any data transmitted during your online sessions could be vulnerable to eavesdropping by strangers using the same network.

That’s where a VPN comes in: VPNs encrypt your data while online, scrambling it so that strangers can’t read it. The encryption that a VPN provides keep your online activities private, everything from sending emails and shopping online to paying bills or chatting with your doctor.

A VPN can also hide your IP address so that snoops don’t know that it’s you who is surfing the net, downloading files, and commenting on Reddit groups. How does this work? A VPN encrypts the data you send and receive on whatever device youre using, including your phone, laptop, or tablet. It sends your data through a secure tunnel to the VPN service providers servers. Your data is encrypted and rerouted to whatever site youre trying to reach.

Why Do I Need A VPN

A VPN helps transform your connection to the internet into a safer and more secure experience. It can enhance the security of your personal information and your online privacy. These are the main benefits of a VPN.

For instance, consider the dangers of using public Wi-Fi. Cybercriminals may be able to access personal data you send and receive, even if the network youre on is password-protected. In some cases, the data can be used to steal your personal information to access your online accounts. A VPN can help protect your data in two ways. For one, it can help prevent data from being stolen through a phony public Wi-Fi set up by a cybercriminal. It can also help protect data being passed on a legitimate public Wi-Fi thats been hacked by a cybercriminal.

Whats more, your internet searches on a VPN remain private. And while third parties may only be using this information to target you for advertising, there are other risks

For example, your information could be accessed in a data breach. Criminals might use the exposed information to create spear-phishing emails. If you click on one of these bogus emails, you could become a victim of a ransomware attack.

Spear-phishing emails are often specifically tailored to your interests. They attempt to lure you into clicking on links containing a variety of malware. That includes keystroke logging malware, or ransomware that can lock and encrypt your computers data, making it inaccessible to you unless you pay a ransom.

Norton is pushing hard on mobile with the launch of a new mobile VPN, but forget about torrents and accessing overseas Netflix catalogues: The company says it just wants you to stay safe on public Wi-Fi.

The company on Tuesday announced the global launch of Norton Wi-Fi Privacy — a subscription-based app that encrypts all the data you send over a public Wi-Fi network, from social media logins to internet banking details and shared photos and videos. It’s available now on both Apple and Android devices.

Norton is so concerned about your security that it commissioned a dedicated Wi-Fi Risk Report to tie in with the launch, surveying internet users in nine countries to show just how little we care about our own privacy.

It seems that Norton is trying to save us from ourselves.

At its heart, this security app is a VPN for mobile:

Norton Secure VPN Servers & Ip Addresses

Norton Secure VPN has 2,000+ servers in 30+ countries.

It doesnt publicly publish the number of servers it has, but a Norton Secure VPN support rep confirmed the server count is over 2,000, which is pretty good. Top competitors have larger server networks, including ExpressVPN and CyberGhost VPN , but Norton Secure VPN still has servers spread out all over the world to help you find a nearby server thats not overcrowded. The majority of Norton Secure VPNs servers are located in Europe, but theyre also present in North, Central, and South America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia.

Norton Secure VPN only lets you connect to a country, and not a city . This prevents you from connecting to a specific city that is closer to your location to get faster speeds. For example, I get faster speeds in Romania when Im connected to a server in New York than in Los Angeles. Norton Secure VPN also doesnt display the server load percentage, which shows you how many active users are connected to a server.

One of my biggest complaints with Norton Secure VPN is it doesnt support P2P traffic on any VPN server. If youre looking for a good torrenting VPN, my favorites are ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access.

Norton Secure VPN doesnt have dedicated IP addresses. Dedicated IP addresses are IP addresses that are only assigned to you. If you need a dedicated IP, PrivateVPN offers free dedicated IPs, and Private Internet Access charges a small fee for one.

Not A Good Choice For Torrenting

Torrenting

Port Forwarding No

Other VPN review websites claim that Norton Secure VPN doesnt support torrenting. But we found that it allows you to download P2P files on its server in the Netherlands.

If you try torrenting while connected to a different server location, the VPN app will block the download and show an error message. To connect to the Netherlands, choose the Torrent-Optimized Region option at the top of the server list.

Norton Secure VPN blocks torrenting outside of the Netherlands.

Theres no good reason for Norton to restrict P2P downloads to the Netherlands. Although it was previously legal to download copyrighted material there, this was stopped in 2014.

Wed like to see Norton expand its P2P server network to at least include an option for North American users.

All VPNs Are Not Created Equal

While there are many VPN solutions and services available these days, not all of them are secure. Some VPN services are entirely fraudulent and install malware1, while others lock you into never-ending contracts or payment plans.

You need to do your homework and carefully research the VPN you plan on using, as all of your traffic will pass through the VPN. With the malicious VPNs, they will often steal your sensitive data, along with the malware install, leading to complete compromise of your identity.

Is Norton Secure VPN Worth Trying Out In 2022

Norton Wifi Privacy VPN Reviews and Pricing

Norton Secure VPN is secure, fast, easy to use, and an overall good choice for browsing, streaming Netflix, and gaming.

Norton Secure VPN has industry-standard security features like 256-bit AES encryption, a no-logs policy, a kill switch, and secure protocols. It also has extra features like split-tunneling, an ad blocker, and Tor support. In my speed tests, Norton Secure VPN maintained very good speeds on local servers , but I experienced slower speeds for streaming, gaming, and browsing on distant servers in the US and Japan.

That said, Norton Secure VPN has a lot of room for improvement. Norton Secure VPN keeps logs of IP addresses, it doesnt have DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leak protection, its unable to access top streaming sites like Disney+, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer, it doesnt allow P2P traffic, and it doesnt work in restrictive countries like China.

Norton Secure VPN has monthly and yearly plans for 1, 5, and 10 devices. It has a generous 60-day money-back guarantee for the annual plans and a 14-day money-back guarantee for the monthly plans. You can also get Norton Secure VPN for free when you purchase Norton 360, our #1 choice for best antivirus in 2022.

Norton Secure VPN Vs Other VPNs

Fix problem accessing specific websites when connected to Norton Secure VPN

Outside of user-friendliness and having a no-log policy, which is great for peace of mind on software designed to protect privacy, Norton Secure VPN falls short in key comparisons to our current top pick of VPNs. The most noticeable one is the device limit. Norton Secure gives you either one, five, or ten devices, depending on which service you pay for, but ExpressVPN and Hotspot Shield offer the lowest count of our current top five.

Even then, its five simultaneous connections, which means you can install the software on more devices or configure these VPNs at a router level to protect all devices in your home. On the other end of the scale, CyberGhost allows for seven simultaneous connections, while PureVPN lets you have 10.

Norton Secure has, by far, the lowest country count at 31, with the next closest being NordVPNs 59 and the best of our current top five being the 140+ on offer from PureVPN. At 3,000 servers, the server count is also the lowest, which pales in comparison to the 6,500+ from PureVPN and the 7,000+ from CyberGhost.

As for speed, all of the VPNs in our current top five have Norton Secure beat, most notably Hotspot Shield, which is the VPN you want if you care more about speed than anything else.
