VPN Services: What Can I Use Them For
There are a number of things you can use a VPN for, including:
Whether its accessing your offices private network while working from a local coffee shop or watching HBO GO on your trip to China, VPNs can come in handy for more than just general privacy or security online, although theyll give you that, as well.
Expressvpn Vs Ipvanish Speed Tests
In this ExpressVPN vs IPVanish speed comparison, I tested both VPNs with different server locations around the world. I conducted all tests on a 500 Mbps baseline connection.
Note: ExpressVPN has launched a big performance upgrade with the Lightway protocol. In our tests, this protocol delivers much faster speeds than OpenVPN. Lightway is similar to WireGuard and we used it for the tests below. IPVanish does not support these faster protocols and still relies mainly on OpenVPN.
Test #1: Seattle, USA
This ExpressVPN server in Seattle gave me about 136 Mbps:
This isnt great, but its also not horrible. Lets see if IPVanish is faster than ExpressVPN for this location.
Here was the IPVanish server in Seattle, giving me about 79 Mbps:
ExpressVPN was the clear winner in this location, coming in around 57 Mbps faster than IPVanish.
Next, I tested servers in Los Angeles.
Test #2: Los Angeles, USA
Here was the ExpressVPN server in Los Angeles with speeds around 209 Mbps:
At over 200 Mbps, this is a good speed test result from ExpressVPN.
Here was the IPVanish server in Los Angeles, coming in around 68 Mbps:
ExpressVPN was faster than IPVanish for this location as well, beating it by about 141 Mbps.
Test #3: New York, USA
Next up was New York. Here was the ExpressVPN server in New York at about 214 Mbps:
Now lets compare this to IPVanish. Here was the IPVanish server in New York at around 5 Mbps:
Lastly, I tested a few servers in the United Kingdom.
Test #4: United Kingdom
What Is Rdp Or Remote Desktop
RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol and is sometimes just referred to as Remote Desktop. Its the commonly used name for a group of applications that allow you to access computers or devices from a remote location.
Remote desktop solutions are becoming more and more common with the increased prevalence of distributed workforces and more employees regularly working from home. Its perfect for people who are frequently on the go, work out of a home office, or are often out in the field and need access to their local desktop computer.
Sometimes referred to as screen sharing, remote desktop can give you full access to your desktop computer from anywhere with an internet connection. When thinking about VPN vs remote desktop, this can come in handy if you dont foresee needing access to certain files stored locally.
RDP or remote desktop even allows you to launch applications, change administrator settings, and perform other tasks as if you were using your computer from your desk. Remote desktop gives you access to shared network resources in addition to the resources on the computer or device that is being controlled.

What Do Net Neutrality Changes Mean For My VPN Usage
Net neutrality has been severely under fire in the US. The;Federal Communications Commission has eliminated many of the consumer protections;against internet service providers harvesting traffic data and selling that data to advertisers, or worse.;
This could be bad. I’m not terribly concerned if Comcast discovers my secret passion for muscle cars and I get more ads for car customizing kits. It might be annoying, but I’m not doing anything I want to hide. The problem could occur if ISPs start inserting their own ads in place of ads by, say, ZDNet. That could cut off the revenue that keeps websites alive, and that;could have very serious repercussions.
As for personal use and whether you should use a VPN at home because of net neutrality, I don’t think we’re there… yet. Certainly, if you’re working on confidential information and connecting to work, you should use a VPN. But we haven’t yet seen any evidence of ISPs being so intrusive that always-on VPNs are required at home.
Stay tuned to this guide because if that changes, we’ll let you know.
Security Issues And Controversies
On October 21, 2019, a security researcher disclosed on a server breach of NordVPN involving a leaked private key. The cyberattack granted the attackers root access, which was used to generate an HTTPScertificate that enabled the attackers to perform man-in-the-middle attacks to intercept the communications of NordVPN users. In response, NordVPN confirmed that one of its servers based in Finland was breached in March 2018. The exploit was the result of a vulnerability in a contracted data center‘s remote administration system that affected the Finland server between January 31 and March 20, 2018. According to NordVPN, the data center disclosed the breach to NordVPN on April 13, 2019, and NordVPN ended its relationship with the data center. Security researchers and media outlets criticized NordVPN for failing to promptly disclose the breach after the company became aware of it. NordVPN stated that the company initially planned to disclose the breach after it completed its internal audits.
In October 2020, NordVPN started rolling out its first colocated servers in Finland to secure the hardware perimeter. The RAM-based servers are fully owned and operated by NordVPN in an attempt to keep full control.
On October 29, 2019, NordVPN announced additional audits and a bug bounty program. The bug bounty was launched in December 2019, offering researchers monetary rewards for reporting critical flaws in the service.

Sdp Vs VPN: What Reddit Has To Say
We decided to dip into the sea of Reddit and see what Reddit users have to say about SDP and VPN.
Reddit user __GCHQ__, who worked for a cybersecurity vendor, was found praising the SDP approach as it allows to login to everything with just the browser and a simple set of login details, hence increasing the visibility.
Reddit user red_babun was found preferring VPNs over SDP because not everyone can rearchitect all network infrastructures.
Upon a little bit of more surfing through Reddit, we found an almost equal number of votes against the two. In the end, it seems, it all comes down to your network infrastructure and requirement.
Can I Stream Netflix With A VPN
Truth be told, its kind of a gamble. There are a lot of services out there that claim to unlock Netflixs international libraries, but a few years ago Netflix really began cracking down on users accessing their services with a VPN. What works today might not work tomorrow.
That said, most VPNs dont exist in a vacuum, nor are they static. Theyre constantly updating and tweaking their configurations and offering new protocols that can bypass restrictive networks. By selecting a VPN that offers streaming optimizations, youre more than likely going to be able to access everything Netflix has to offer.

Another benefit of a VPN is that your true IP address is hidden behind the IP address of the VPN server. This makes it harder for advertisers and others to track your movements across the web. Even a dedicated observer would have a hard time telling whose traffic is whose, because your data is mixed in with everyone else using the same VPN server.
What Is A VPN And Why Do You Need One Everything You Need To Know

Https Vs VPN: Why You Need Both
HTTPS and VPNs do similar things in different ways, so its understandable why some people confuse the two. Both are tools used to protect internet users and their privacy, but luckily, when it comes to HTTPS vs. VPN, you can easily use both. Learn what HTTPS and VPNs do, what they have in common, and how they differ.
Proxy And VPN Defined
Both VPNs and proxies enable a higher degree of privacy than you might otherwise have, allowing you to access the internet anonymously by hiding your IP in various ways. But how they do that is quite different.
A proxy acts as a gateway its ideal for basic functions like anonymous web browsing and managing content restrictions. Proxy servers excel at IP masking and misdirection, making them good for viewing geographically limited content. They allow users to bypass content restrictions and monitoring, or enforce website content restrictions so that you cant log into certain web pages on company time.
A VPN client on your computer establishes a secure tunnel with the VPN server, replacing your local ISP routing. VPN connections encrypt and secure all of your network traffic, not just the HTTP or SOCKS calls from your browser like a proxy server.
VPNs are great when you need to use the WIFI at a local coffee shop: using a VPN instead of the potentially completely unencrypted local WIFI adds another layer of privacy who knows who is lurking on that network, just sitting in the corner sipping coffee and waiting to steal your credit card digits?

What Is A Virtual Private Network
A virtual private network, or VPN, is a private network that encrypts any data sent to or received from the internet. It helps you securely and privately access websites and use your programs and apps, regardless of the network youre using.
Think of it as a secure courier, taking websites data from the website and delivering it securely to your computer. Just like an armored car would transport cash to and from an ATM.
It also hides your IP , and allows you to change your location so you can get access to geo-restricted content. Like if your favorite show isnt available on Netflix in the country youre visiting.
You can also access your companys file system remotely with an office IP address.
A VPN works at the operating system level and encrypts all incoming and outgoing internet traffic.
Wireguard Vs Openvpn: Mobility
Devices today frequently move between mobile and WiFi networks. A good VPN protocol needs to be able to make that switch efficiently and effectively.
WireGuard is far better than OpenVPN for mobility. It handles network changes seamlessly, whereas OpenVPN has historically struggled when users regularly switch between networks. Many VPN services have actually opted to use a different protocol, IKEv2, for mobile devices.
IKEv2 is a reasonably good VPN protocol, but it is closed source and some people have concerns that it may have been compromised by the NSA. Instead, then, WireGuard presents a new, open-source solution to the problem of which VPN protocol to use on mobile.
If youre using a VPN while on the move, we strongly recommend using WireGuard rather than OpenVPN.
Unlike OpenVPN, WireGuard copes impressively with regular network changes. Its also faster and more privacy-friendly than IKEv2, which is many VPN services current default protocol for mobile users.

Tor Vs VPN: Which Should I Use
Both Tor and VPNs have their uses, but which you use depends on what you want to do.
A good rule of thumb is to use a VPN all the time and use Tor when you need it. A VPN improves your privacy without interfering with day-to-day web browsing and internet usage. Launch Tor when anonymity is critical or you want to access the dark web.
Do VPN Service Providers Limit Usage And How
Some do. Some don’t.;Look at that directory I mentioned earlier;because that’s one of the factors where a service might lose some points.
Some VPN services will limit the total amount of data you can send and receive, either in one connection session or over a month. Other VPN services will limit the speed of the data, effectively sharing less of their pipe with you than might be optimal. That could slow your browsing experience to a crawl or completely prevent you from watching streaming videos through streaming services.
Usually, it’s the free services that throttle your usage in these ways. Some paid services will offer a trial, where you can transmit up to a certain data cap before being asked to sign up as a paying customer. That’s actually pretty cool because it gives you a chance to try out the performance of their service before paying, but it also gives the vendor a chance to make money necessary to operate the service.
Many VPN services claim that they’ll provide you with unlimited data transmission if you pay their fee and won’t throttle your speeds. Generally, this is true, but I’ll give you my standard “unlimited bandwidth” warning: It’s been my experience that when a vendor says something is “unlimited,” it’s almost always limited. Somewhere, there will be a note in the fine print or terms of service that allows the vendor to limit you in some way. It pays to read those agreements.

The Final Word On Selecting The Best Virtual Private Networks
While ExpressVPN gets our highest recommendation, any of the above services are great options. A VPN is a necessary security precaution in todays networked world and the bonus benefits are numerous. Spending $30 to $100 a year may seem like an unnecessary expense, but all it takes is one time that you should have had a VPN to make you wish you did. If you live a good portion of your life onlineand lets be honest, anyone reading this probably doesa VPN is a necessity, not a luxury.

Better Than A VPN Or Using Tor: What Is Onion Over VPN
This might just be the most sure-fire way to anonymize your internet connection. While a VPN is an excellent tool for security, its not necessarily the most private. Tor is ideal for privacy but falls a little short on security for the first hop. Does combining the two provide better protection? What is onion over VPN?
Onion over VPN is a combination of technologies used to protect and anonymize internet traffic. A user first connects to a trusted VPN service which then passes through The Onion Router network. Directing the users connection through 4 or more systems hides its origination.
Is using Tor;and;a personally-owned or privacy-respecting VPN service overkill?;First, you need to understand a middle-ground technique.
Netflix And Streaming With Expressvpn And Ipvanish
In terms of streaming Netflix, there is one VPN that always works, and another that almost never works .
ExpressVPN is arguably one of the;best VPNs for Netflix. It consistently works with Netflix and provides excellent speeds for HD streaming, no matter where you are located. Here Im streaming American Netflix through an ExpressVPN server in Washington, DC:
ExpressVPN also works for other Netflix regions around the world. Additionally, you can also use the , Disney Plus, Hulu, and more.
IPVanish, on the other hand, is not a good VPN for Netflix, and they openly admit this. When I chatted with an IPVanish service representative asking why I could not access Netflix on any IPVanish server, he stated:
Netflix has been very vigilant recently in trying to block our services.
On a positive note, IPVanish has been working to offer support for Netflix, but it still seems to be hit or miss based on my own tests. It is also not the best VPN for BBC iPlayer, with IPVanish connections being blocked.
In comparison to IPVanish, ExpressVPN is the best VPN for Netflix and streaming various services around the world.

Do Proxies Slow Down The Internet
Usually, speed isnt the issue with some premium proxy services. However, if you opt for a free or public proxy service, you are most likely to face continuous speed issues. The problem often arises due to servers that are overloaded with users. Apart from that low-bandwidth proxy server is another factor behind a slow connection.
What’s The Most Secure VPN For Privacy
If you’re a journalist, a lawyer or a professional in any other privacy-sensitive field, forget about speed and price when choosing a VPN. Focus, instead, entirely on security. Your VPN may be somewhat slower but, for both VPNs and presidential motorcades, speed is always the trade-off for privacy. Avoid free VPNs,;browser-based VPNs;and any VPN headquartered in;the US or other Five Eyes countries. Keep an eye on encryption: Your VPN should offer a protocol called OpenVPN TCP . You may find;our primer on VPN evaluations;useful. Although speed does play a factor in our rankings, our top three VPNs were all selected by veteran journalists, scrutinized and reviewed with complete editorial independence, with the most privacy-sensitive professions in mind.
