Do VPN Providers Keep Log Files
VPN companies should not be keeping log files, and all of them claim that they dont. However, many still do, which is why its important to do your research.
After going through 118 different VPNs, we found that 26 of them will collect three or more important log files that would easily reveal your personal actions.
They all say they dont log. But many of them do. The trick is to dig into their privacy policies and terms of service to see what, exactly, theyre logging.
For example, pretty much all of them will track aggregate bandwidth usage so they can monitor their own server performance.
That stuff is no problem.
It starts to get a little tricky when they track when you log in or out of their service. And youll want to run for the hills when they track the individual websites you visit.
To make matters worse, a lot of them use overly-complicated legal mumbo-jumbo to confuse the issues.
Theyll word it in such a way that makes it sound innocent. Where it doesnt seem like theyll track the files you download.

Vyprvpn A Secure And Private Swiss VPN
VyprVPN is another VPN service that has been around a long time and has an excellent reputation and track record. This virtual private network is based in Switzerland and checks all the boxes for privacy and security.
One thing that sets VyprVPN apart from many others is that it owns every server in its network, with no rented servers from third parties. This means that VyprVPNs entire network consists of self-owned colocated servers that are completely under their control. The current number of servers in VyprVPNs network is around 700.
Like the other top VPN services above, VyprVPN also fully supports the WireGuard VPN protocol. You can use WireGuard with VyprVPN on all major devices and operating systems simply by selecting the protocol in the user settings area. If you are looking for the best VPN for consistently fast speeds, VyprVPN is a solid choice, as you can see below:
Another thing that sets VyprVPN apart from most other services is the number of simultaneous connections. With VyprVPN, you get 30 simultaneous connections, which is far above the industry average.
Why You Should Trust Us
We scoured articles, white papers, customer reviews, security audit reports, and forums to compile the pros and cons of various VPN services, different VPN protocols and encryption technologies, and signals indicating transparency, trustworthiness, and security.
We interviewed Electronic Frontier Foundation director of cybersecurity Eva Galperin about limitations of VPNs and tips for selecting the appropriate VPN based on individual circumstances. We spoke with Trail of Bits co-founder and CEO Dan Guido about the security challenges inherent in VPNs and the limitations of security audits and reports. We got answers from Joseph Jerome, then the policy counsel for the Center for Democracy & Technologys privacy and data project, about how accountable VPNs were for their business models, privacy practices, security protocols, and protections, and how that related to trustworthiness. We discussed what to look forand avoidin VPNs with security researcher Kenneth White, co-director of the Open Crypto Audit Project, and with cryptographer and Johns Hopkins University professor Matthew Green. We also touched base with blockchain privacy expert and Clovyr co-founder Amber Baldet to discuss the privacy advantages and pitfalls to consider when paying for a VPN with cryptocurrency.

Free VPNs Without Speed Caps
As most free VPNs already employ data limits, they dont need to set speed caps. As a result, these VPNs are often just as fast as paid VPNs. Some free VPNs dont actively set speed caps because their free servers are already slowed down by the large number of users.
Luckily, there are free providers that offer a relatively sizeable number of servers, such as TunnelBear and Windscribe. This means that, even though the VPN connection is free, speeds are still very decent. TunnelBear especially clearly demonstrates what a paid subscription would look like, as this VPN provider gives you access to all its servers, albeit with very limited data .

Can VPN Services Be Trusted
All VPN providers claim to have no-logs policies, but this isn’t often the truth. There are many reports of a no-logs VPN service, which leaked private its users’ information after a major data breach. So, even if you’re not paranoid, it may be a bit hard to trust such claims.
However, there are ways to filter out untrustworthy VPN services. Here’s what you should look for:
- Court cases. There’s no better method to prove its privacy-policy claims than their response to the law requests. If a VPN service collaborates with law enforcement and shows up in court with a list of logs, don’t think that it would be different in your case.
- Ownership. You should always take into account the owners of a VPN service. Chances are they manage several other products and look into how they are managed. Were there any data breaches or privacy scandals? This may also help to form a perspective on how your data will be treated.

Cyberghost Torrenting And Netflix
CyberGhost once discouraged torrenting, but now it touts it as one of its main selling points.
You wont be able to torrent on every server in the CyberGhost park, however. There are specific servers that are designed for torrenting, and they are easy to find through a tab located in the app.
CyberGhost also tries to directly tackle the issue of Netflix blocking. It uses a streaming server that continuously changes its IP whenever Netflix identifies it.
We tested this out and it worked perfectly. They specifically label the servers that work for Netflix, so you wont have to look too hard.

Can You Trust Any VPN To Be Private
When you sign up for a VPN service, you give it permission to view all the data you’re trying to keep private from some other party, such as your internet service provider you’re essentially swapping who you show your data from a party you don’t trust to one you do. But, can you actually trust VPNs?
You shouldn’t blindly trust anything. It helps to know as much as possible about a VPN provider, such as who owns it, who runs it and where it’s based, but if you’re really privacy conscious, you’ll want to give your VPN provider as little information about yourself as possible. That means seeking out a provider that might offer anonymous payments, or perhaps doesn’t require an email address.
However, while many do require an email address, if you’re really keen on staying anonymous you can sign up for a free, secure email provider like ProtonMail. That way you don’t have to tie your name to your VPN.

Another benefit of a VPN is that your true IP address is hidden behind the IP address of the VPN server. This makes it harder for advertisers and others to track your movements across the web. Even a dedicated observer would have a hard time telling whose traffic is whose, because your data is mixed in with everyone else using the same VPN server.
Where Can I Get A Free Us/uk VPN To Unblock Spotify
Free VPNs are ten-a-penny, but services that are fast and reliable are much harder to find. Generally, free VPNs have more users than paid services, which means theyre usually far slower. As you might expect, this can make streaming very difficult.
Instead of risking your security with a free VPN, why not take advantage of ExpressVPNs 30-day money-back guarantee? You will have to pay upfront, but you can try the service out risk-free and claim a full refund if it doesnt meet your expectations.

How We Test VPN Services
When we test these services for our VPN reviews, we’re looking for features, value, and clear and honest pricing. Free ways to learn more about a service – free plans, trial periods, refund periods – are important, and we also looked for companies which maintain your privacy when you sign up .
VPN performance is difficult to measure as there are so many variables, but we used multiple techniques to try and get a feel for each service’s abilities. We use speed test tools to measure the latency, upload and download speeds for a distant connection , repeated the test immediately with the VPN turned off, and looked at any changes. We follow this up with a much shorter connection to see a more typical peak performance.
VPNs will always give you a new IP address, but some services may have DNS or other leaks which give clues about your identity. We visited IPLeak.net and other privacy sites to look for problems.
In terms of the client and interface, we’re looking for top VPN server selection tools , with plenty of configuration options, but also a client which stays out of the way until it’s needed.
What Are The VPN Dos And Don’ts
The best VPN can make it look like you’re located somewhere you’re not. It’s a well-worn practice to evade online censorship, as is done in some countries, or to tap into US streaming services while in Europe or Asia. We’ve used VPNs to read the New York morning paper in Beijing, and watch US TV in London.
But there are some caveats. A VPN will give you more privacy, but not more security. If you end up on a website harboring malware, the VPN can’t prevent you from being infected.
If you just want to evade geographical restrictions on streaming content such as BBC iPlayer or Hulu, you don’t necessarily need a VPN to do so. You just need a proxy service that will make it look like you’re in the right country. There are many free proxy services available, but do your homework before choosing one some are a bit dodgy.
Finally, Netflix and the BBC are cracking down on VPNs and proxy services. There are no guarantees that a particular service will evade geographical restrictions on a particular day.

What Is The Most Private VPN
Overall, we recommend ExpressVPN as the most private VPN on the market. It’s great for streaming, staying anonymous, has plenty of servers, and also delivers excellent connection speeds.
More VPNs To Consider
There are plenty of other VPN services out there. Heres our selection of a few that have merits but havent quite made it onto this months recommended list.
Avira Phantom VPN: German antivirus firm Avira has built its own VPN infrastructure from the ground up. Its modest, with just 36 servers across 34 counties and isnt great for streaming video beyond Netflix, but its European endpoint performance is generally decent when connecting from the UK. Free Phantom VPN users get 500MB of data every month if you dont register. This is increased to 1GB if you create an Avira account, but the lack of a registration requirement makes it a great option if you just need a VPN in a hurry for Windows, Android and iOS.
F-Secure FREEDOME: Unlike most anti-virus firms who dabble in the world VPNs, Finlands F-Secure has fully committed to setting up its own infrastructure, rather than using someone elses. Performance is generally good, especially in Europe, but its not built for region shifting, and only supports Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. Theres a great 5-day, unlimited, registration-free trial on offer, though, and a reasonably priced three-device entry-level subscription tier.

Which Devices Can I Install A Free VPN On
Most free VPNs are compatible with laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones. This list includes free VPNs with apps for many devices, including ones running: Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. Some of them are even compatible with routers and Amazon Fire TV Stick, while others have free Firefox and Chrome extensions.
Most free VPNs only let you connect to 1 device at a time, so keep in mind that even if its compatible on lots of your devices, you wont be able to connect them all at once.
What Does Nordvpn Do
We usually hail NordVPN as the cheaper alternative to ExpressVPN. After all, its one of the most reliable VPN services, has a ton of useful features, and comes at nearly half the price of ExpressVPN. However, we cant quite recommend it for beginners because its UI can be confusing, mostly due to all the features NordVPN crams into its VPN client.
NordVPNs standout feature is its selection of specialty servers. There are servers dedicated to torrenting, multi-hop servers and Onion Over VPN servers that route your internet connection through the Tor network . However, some of these servers only work with certain VPN protocols, which makes them a bit fiddly to use.

Slow International Speeds And Connection Times
The problem we found with Windscribe was the slower long-distance speeds compared to ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
These slower speeds affect the quality of the picture when streaming overseas video content. We experienced a blurry broadcast several times while streaming a movie in our recent tests.
Furthermore, connecting to certain servers can take many seconds at best, but many minutes at worst. Sometimes we couldnt even connect at all.
