Keeping VPN Traffic In The Tunnel

PIA / Private Internet Access VPN Installation Walk-through & Review | by @SolutionsReview

Most VPNs rely on tunneling to create a private network that reaches across the internet. In our article “How does the internet work?” we describe how each data file is broken into a series of packets to be sent and received by computers connected to the internet. Tunneling is the process of placing an entire packet within another packet before it’s transported over the internet. That outer packet protects the contents from public view and ensures that the packet moves within a virtual tunnel.

This layering of packets is called encapsulation. Computers or other network devices at both ends of the tunnel, called tunnel interfaces, can encapsulate outgoing packets and reopen incoming packets. Users and IT personnel configure the tunnel interfaces they’re responsible for to use a tunneling protocol. Also called an encapsulation protocol, a tunneling protocol is a standardized way to encapsulate packets . Later in this article, you can read about the different tunneling protocols used by VPNs.

To better understand the relationships between protocols, think of tunneling as having a computer delivered to you by a shipping company. The vendor who is sending you the computer packs the computer in a box . Shippers then place that box on a shipping truck at the vendor’s warehouse . The truck travels over the highways to your home and delivers the computer. You open the box and remove the computer .

Does Your VPN Drain Battery

A VPN will consume more of your batterys power when it is on. This can be a problem when you are using a VPN with your smartphone. Many VPNs do come with a power saver feature, though. This automatically turns your VPN off when your devices screen turns off. Then, when you turn your device back on, the VPN automatically turns itself back on, too.

Secure Your Data Over Public Wi

The convenience of free public Wi-Fi often comes with a loss of security. Since anyone can hop onto an unsecured Wi-Fi network, theres no way to know exactly whos connected at any given time, or what theyre doing. Its easy for a hacker to sit on a public Wi-Fi network and intercept all the traffic flowing across it.

If you log into your bank account, check your email, or hang out on social media, a hacker can snap up your login credentials. Any messages you send or personal data you transmit can be intercepted and used for blackmail or identity theft. The risks of public Wi-Fi are almost endless.

Because a VPN connection encrypts your communication with its server, anyone trying to eavesdrop on the public network will see only gibberish. Thats a big part of what VPN protection is: ensuring that no one can access your data.

How To Set Up Port Forwarding On A VPN

Many premium VPNs today come with a NAT firewall built in. When a VPN is connected, it will disable port forwarding and automatically close all opened ports.

However, that doesnt mean the two cant go hand in hand. VPNs can significantly improve your security when port forwarding, and a few providers support the feature.

For this guide, we will use PrivateVPN to show you how to set up port forwarding.

Advantage : Anonymous Downloading

Private Internet Access VPN Review and Giveaway

Downloading certain Torrents is illegal in some countries and more than ever before tracked down and sometimes even prosecuted. Of course, we are not advocating any illegal actions. However, we do understand people want online privacy and anonymity, not just when browsing the internet, but also when uploading and downloading files.

To make sure nobody knows what you are downloading or uploading you can use a VPN. Because of the encrypted traffic and the rerouted IP address you can with a VPN.

Subscribe To A Trustworthy VPN Provider

For beginners we highly recommend using SurfShark or NordVPN. We tested these providers extensively and found them to be very suitable for beginners, as they are easy to understand and set up, while also being very fast. Moreover, these two VPNs allow you to secure multiple devices with a single subscription and offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. This way you can try them for a month without being stuck to a long-term subscription. Furthermore, using the links and buttons on our website will get you a discount with these providers.

You can check out our extensive reviews on our review page. Weve also reviewed other VPN-providers of course. Some other impressive VPNs are PIA, CyberGhost, and ProtonVPN. The latter also happens to offer one of the best free VPN subscriptions.

Many free VPNs are unsafe and work with data or speed limits, but ProtonVPN doesnt do this. Weve researched plenty of VPNs to search for free providers that are secure and safe to use. You can read all about these in our article about free VPN providers.

Once youve chosen your VPN service, youll have to subscribe to them. Create an account and make sure you have your log-in info at hand. Youll need it in the following steps. As weve mentioned earlier, CyberGhost and NordVPN both have a money-back guarantee, so you can always try them out and get a refund if you dislike the service.

Are VPNs Free And Are Free VPNs Safe

Free VPNs exist, but theyre usually far less secure than leading premium VPN services. A free VPN service may replace subscription fees by showing you ads or by collecting and selling your personal data. Other problems with free VPNs include:

  • Weak protocols: Most free services provide only PPTP , an obsolete method built in the 1990s. Several PPTP vulnerabilities have been discovered over the years, and the encryption can be broken easily using tools that are widely available online.

  • Slow speeds: When everyone crowds onto a free VPN, its servers can quickly become overwhelmed, delaying connections and slowing things down.

  • Bandwidth limits: Free VPN services often have restrictions on the amount of data you can use per day, while most premium VPNs offer unlimited data.

  • Fewer server locations: A free service rarely supports as many locations as a leading premium VPN service.

  • Advertising: Free VPNs may insert ads into websites that might not usually have them, which isnt just annoying it can also be a security risk.

You can experience the benefits of a leading premium VPN service with a 7-day free trial for AVG Secure VPN. Hide your IP address, protect your personal data, access all the content you want, and secure your internet connection.

How Much Does A VPN Cost

Compare a VPN providers price to the level of service they provide. One VPN might be cheaper than another, but does it let you connect as many devices at the same time? Does it have as many server locations as another VPN? Consider these factors when evaluating VPNs by price.

Here, weve listed the monthly prices for each VPN, though several VPNs bill annually. Many of these VPN providers offer lower rates with longer subscription commitments or special promotions.

Private Internet Access Customer Support

Private Internet Access Sold Out! | Choosing A New VPN

PIA has great troubleshooting guides, a detailed FAQ section, 24/7 live chat, and email support.

Unfortunately, PIA doesnt have phone support.

PIA has extensive step-by-step guides that show you how to install and uninstall the PIA app and troubleshoot issues. I like that the guides have a reader-friendly layout , and the FAQ section has over 100 questions! I found the guides and FAQs answered most of my questions.

When I tested PIAs live chat, I was always connected to a support rep in under 10 seconds, and the reps were responsive, friendly, and knowledgeable. The one drawback is that the live chat is only available in English.

I also sent PIA 5 emails and received a reply each time within 2-3 hours. Most VPN companies respond to an email in 6-8 hours, and some even only respond the next day.

It was simple to get a refund over live chat. The rep didnt try to pressure me into changing my mind, and I only needed my order number to process the refund.

Overall, PIA has excellent customer support. There are useful setup and troubleshooting guides along with in-depth FAQs, responsive and knowledgeable 24/7 live chat reps, and PIA responded to my emails in only a couple of hours.

Private Internet Access Full Review

I spent a couple of weeks testing and researching Private Internet Access to see whether or not its actually one of the top VPNs out there.

PIA has excellent security features, is very intuitive and user-friendly, and it maintains fast speeds across all servers.

PIA had excellent speeds in my speed tests, which allowed me to stream content in HD without any buffering , download torrent files quickly, and browse the web without interruptions.

Pia Is A Tested And Proven No Logs VPN

Many VPN services claim to be no logs but few have actually been tested and/or verified.

Private Internet Access is one of the few verified no logs VPN services that has survived real-world tests. There were two separate court cases where Private Internet Access was subpoenaed for data logs, but they could not provide any information.

The first court case occurred in 2016 when the FBI demanded logs concerning a PIA user who had allegedly been making bomb threats. As discussed in official court records, the only information PIA was able to provide was a cluster of VPN IP addresses that were allegedly used for the crime:

A subpoena was sent to London Trust Media and the only information they could provide is that the cluster of IP addresses being used was from the east coast of the United States.

The second court case occurred in June 2018, when US authorities again demanded data logs for a criminal investigation. Once again, however, PIA was not able to provide any data on the accused VPN user:

While PIA has not undergone an audit to verify their no logs policies, such as with NordVPN and VyprVPN, these two court cases certainly validate their claims.

Court cases are indeed a good test to verify logging claims. After all, a court case revealed that PureVPN had been logging customer data and handing it over to US authorities, despite claiming to be a no logs VPN service.

Which Different VPN Protocols Are There

VPN connections use an encrypted connection also called a tunnel. There are several ways in which such a VPN connection can be set up. These protocols ensure that your data remains safe and cant be read by others. The most common VPN-protocols are:

If youd like to know more about the different VPN protocols and how they work, you can find a complete overview right here.

Data Privacy From Your Internet Service Provider

What is a VPN?

While connected to your home Wi-Fi, you are less likely to be attacked by strangers than on a public connection. However, your data is still vulnerable.

Your ISP or internet service providerComcast, Spectrum, Verizon or other company who you pay for Wi-Fi each monthcan access all your internet data. Your ISP can see when, where and how you browse.

This data can be collected and sold to advertisers even if youre using the private browsing function, and it can be dangerous in the wrong hands in the case of a data breach. A VPN can help obscure your IP address from your own ISP.

Unfortunately, not all devices can run VPN apps. Your smart fridge, for example, isn’t a likely candidate for convenient app use. If this is a concern for you, you can configure your router to use a VPN connection, or purchase a pre-configured router from some VPN companies. This encrypts data as it leaves your safe home network for the wild web. Information sent within your network will be available, and any smart devices connected to your network will enjoy a secured connection. We haven’t tested this kind of setup, but we’ve come to believe it’s impractical for most people.

What Other Customers Have To Say

Even though there are many different VPN service providers from which you can choose to use for your business, quite a few customers and clients satisfied by the services offered by Private Internet Access. There have been many different reviews, ratings and testimonials posted and published online in reference to their multiple security layers as well as the fact that their services are compatible with a wide variety of different operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The competitive pricing and rates for these services are also very satisfying to the average consumer, especially if they have to stick to a highly restricted IT budget.

Hereâs what one user found in their Speedtest result for their connection to the US-East server :

As you can see from this screen capture, this is a very fast connection rated in the top 10%. Youâll see that this experience is common to many other users as well in the feedback section that follows below.

Here are some comments from actual users of the service:

âI just signed up and the speed is excellent! No problems with general browsing or watching Youtube at all. Iâm using US California server and it feels like Iâm not using a VPN at all.ââ Jotunheim,

Voted Best VPN for Privacy and Torrenting by, this service maintains your privacy online with little effort and at a reasonable monthly fee. This is repeated in user feedback as well:

Examples Of Personal VPN Services

Weve tested hundreds of personal VPNs over the years. Currently, our top five recommended services are:

  • ExpressVPN
  • Heres how it works:

  • The user connects to the VPN and is authenticated.

Authentication options might include passwords, physical tokens such as smart cards, or biometric devices such as fingerprint scanners. In some cases, certificates can be used so the authentication happens automatically in the background.

  • The VPN tunnel is established between the users device and the server.

In a remote access VPN, the VPN tunnel connects to the devices physical IP address, which is tied to its internet connection. In a mobile VPN, the VPN tunnel connects to a logical IP address, which is tied to the device, and so is independent of the internet connection.

  • The VPN connection persists as the user switches between different networks.

If the user is mobile, they might switch between networks . Their physical IP address can change, but the logical IP address the VPN tunnel uses stays the same. The virtual network connection remains intact, so the user can continue working seamlessly as long as they have any connection.

If the device is turned off to preserve the battery life, the VPN connection is still available when the device is switched back on.

  • A Virtual Private Network Levels The Playing Field

Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN review 2021 | Finally, the TRUTH

However, when you go online using a VPN account, you tilt the scales in your favor. A VPN account can instantly and continuously provide

    • More privacy. Your connections cannot be linked to your computerand you. You can visit any website and your ISP doesnt know where youve been.
    • Better security. VPN connections are super secure. The network is hack proof and all of your Internet activity is encrypted and unreadable in transit.
    • Increased website access. No more blocks or censorship. They cant prevent from getting to websites based an IP address.
    • Greater anonymity. Your true IP address is hidden! Youre unidentifiable online because youre constantly using a different IP address, never your own. In fact, it typically looks as if youre in a different part of the world from where you really are.

Heres the best part. Everything else about your Internet experience stays virtually the same.

But you will have so much more going for you.

What Are The Limitations Of Apple Private Relay

While Private Relay is technically very smart, it’s all about security and privacy, and it’s never going to fully compete with a commercial VPN.

There’s no option to choose another location, for instance. And that’s by design. Private Relay chooses the location of your Ingress and Egress Proxies, and it’s those servers working together who get to decide your eventual IP address. There’s no way to do that within the existing system.

It doesn’t look like this will change in the future, either. An Apple developer session stated: ‘Private Relay guarantees that users can’t use the system to pretend to be from a different region, so you can continue to enforce region-based access restrictions.’ An issue for users, but it makes sense for Apple.

The company wants to work with content providers, not alienate them by providing ways to bypass their regional blocking schemes. It is a major content producer itself and the last thing it would want to do is become the go to VPN for Netflix.

Reuters highlighted a similar issue at the country level, reporting that Apple’s new service won’t be available in Belarus, China, Colombia, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkmenistan, Uganda and the Philippines.

If you’re hoping to use Private Relay to get online from some VPN-unfriendly country, be prepared for disappointment. Don’t expect that to change in future, either – Apple isn’t going to compromise its China revenue by encouraging the breaking of Chinese law.

Are There Free Versions And Does It Matter

Many of the top providers offer free versions of their VPNs. But the free versions may be limitations for instance, on how much data you can use.

Some VPN providers offer free trials of their paid versions. The trials typically run for about a month. Some allow to access most of the VPN features of the paid service, although there may be data limitations.

If you sign up for a free trial, you provide the same personal and payment information youd use if you were signing up for the paid service. You can cancel your account before the end of the trial. If you dont cancel, the provider will begin to bill you for continuing service.

Keep in mind, some free VPNs may collect and share or sell your data to third parties for marketing purposes, while others may not block ads.
