How to Buy a VPN Router? How to Choose Router?

Today’s routers are typically very easy to install and configure, and the RT-AC66U B1 is no different. I started by connecting the router to my desktop PC and to my cable modem and waited a minute or two for it to obtain an IP address and connect to the internet. I typed in my browser’s address bar, which automatically launched the Quick Setup utility. I verified my IP address, changed the router user name and password, renamed the SSID and passwords for both radio bands, and was finished.

See How We Test Wireless Routers

The RT-AC66U B1 outperformed other budget-priced routers that we’ve tested. Its score of 97Mbps on our 2.4GHz close-proximity test was much faster than its predecessor, the RT-AC66U, and the D-Link DIR-859. It also beat the TP-Archer C7 V2 , if only by 6Mbps. On the 2.4GHz 30-foot test, the RT-AC66U B1’s score of 65Mbps surpassed the older RT-AC66U and the Archer C7 V2 by a slight margin, but was twice as fast as the D-Link DIR-859.

The RT-AC66U B1’s throughput on the 5GHz band was significantly better than what we saw with the original RT-AC66U. It scored 551Mbps on the close-proximity test compared with the older router’s score of 129Mbps. The D-Link DIR-859 and the Archer C7 V2 also trailed the RT-AC66U B1 on this test. At 30 feet, the RT-AC66U B1 managed 230Mbps, nearly doubling the score from the 2012 version and the D-Link DIR-859. The Archer C7 V2 led with a score of 250Mbps.

Flash New Router Firmware

As we explained at the beginning of this article, all routers come pre-installed with software known as firmware which essentially acts as the devices operating system. With many routers, it is possible to either replace that software or add new software to it, which adds the capacity to run a VPN to your router. This process is known as flashing and while it may sound technical, it is actually fairly straightforward to do. There are two main pieces of firmware that you can flash onto a router to add the capability to connect a VPN. Those are:

DD-WRT is a piece of open-source firmware which intends to open up routers to new functionality including adding the ability to run a VPN on them. With DD-WRT installed on your router, you should be able to do things like adjust the strength of your Wi-Fi signal, manage your routers quality-of-service settings to prioritize certain types of traffic, and even access your home network remotely. It is free software which essentially upgrades your existing router to the spec of a business grade router. The basic framework for DD-WRT supports the OpenVPN protocol, which is the strongest and most commonly used VPN protocol around. But it is also the most processor-intensive and as a result, many routers cannot handle it. As a result, it is most common to use DD-WRT with the PPTP protocol which is less secure but less processor-intensive.

The Downsides Of A Router VPN

The biggest drawback is that you may well discover that your current router cant support your chosen VPNs dedicated router VPN app, if it has one at all and, as you’ll notice in the next couple of paragraphs, it can get a bit confusing.

Youll have to either buy a new router that does, or install DD-WRT firmware to allow you to manually set up a VPN connection a list of DD-WRT-compatible routers is here. There are also some other options, including Tomato.

The other problem is that its more difficult to change your VPNs settings because your router doesnt have a screen or interface. Any alterations will have to be done through your routers dashboard on a PC, some of which are still very basic and difficult to use. However, a company called FlashRouters does provide a very useful router setup service, plus a great app that makes things a lot easier.

However, some VPN services have made the process far simpler than expected one of which being ExpressVPN (read . It has a dedicated website for setting up your router VPN, and apps specifically designed to get your router protected quickly. The Asus RT-AX82U has a unique design with full RGB control that’s a compliment to any gaming setup. Rest assured that the RGB lighting can be completely disabled if you prefer. This router comes with a dual-band AX5400 wireless setup with these high speeds thanks to a 160MHz 5GHz channel. For devices that support Wi-Fi 6, this should have no trouble keeping up with a gigabit connection.

This router also has four Ethernet ports, with one specifically allocated for gaming. If you have a gaming PC or play competitively on your Xbox, this is the preferred port to use. Gaming software is also included and can be controlled with the Asus router app to ensure the right devices and applications have a priority connection. Don’t forget that gaming over a VPN can introduce extra lag, so it’s probably a good idea to create an exception for gaming machines.

Once again, Asus has a robust set of software included with this router, including its AiProtection Pro software for enhanced security and parental controls. This software also supports creating a mesh network with other Asus routers thanks to AiMesh. Naturally, Asus also has VPN client support with OpenVPN, which should be quick and easy to set up with most VPN providers.

How To Choose A VPN Service

    The VPN market has exploded in the past few years, growing from a niche industry to an all-out melee. Many providers are capitalizing on the general population’s growing concerns about surveillance and cybercrime, which means it’s getting hard to tell when a company is actually providing a useful service and when it’s selling snake oil. In fact, there have even been fake VPNs popping up, so be careful.;

When looking for a VPN, don’t just focus on speed, since that’s the factor you and the VPN company have the least control over. Since nearly all VPN companies offer some mixture of the same technologies, consider value instead. How can you get the most for the least? Look for extra features like split tunneling, multi-hop connections, and so on. You may not need these all the time but they’re useful when you do.

Nearly every VPN service provides its own app with a full graphical user interface for managing the VPN connection and settings, and we recommend that you use it. You might dismiss such things as mere chrome, and instead prefer to manually manage your VPN connections. This works, but doing so is tedious, requires manual updating, and won’t give you access to the additional privacy tools that many VPNs provide. When looking at a VPN, decide whether you can stand looking at it.

What VPN Protocol Should I Use

If youâre using ExpressVPN, your default choice is not to choose: Just select âAutomaticâ and let the app select the best protocol for your situation. But if you have special circumstances and want to choose your protocol manually, hereâs an at-a-glance reference list of when to use each one:

Lightway: Very stable and secure, and typically connects in a split second. Itâs built for the movement of a modern internet user, seamlessly reconnecting after network changes or drops. Plus it wonât drain your battery.

OpenVPN: Fast, rugged, and secure. Works on all devices and platforms without breaking a sweat. The only slight drawback is that manual configuration is tedious and uncomfortable. Generally use the OpenVPN protocol if Lightway is not available.

L2TP/IPsec: Cookie-cutter VPN solution thatâs easy to set up and used widely across the VPN landscape. Has more advanced security features as compared with PPTP, but it can struggle to evade some firewalls.

IKEv2: Most suited for mobile devices, particularly if youâre using a BlackBerry. Stable, fast, and secure. A solid alternative to Lightway and OpenVPN.

PPTP: The oldest VPN protocol in use today, but also the most poorly configured. Offers top-notch speed but incredibly lax security and is likely compromised by state actors. Avoid PPTP.

WireGuard: Slowly gaining traction among consumer VPN services, this lean protocol is still under active development and currently lacks the trust of the OpenVPN suite.

Attention: unlike the Invizbox 2 VPN router, the rest of the routers on the list dont come pre-flashed . You will need to acquire and install a VPN on the router yourself. We offer guides for setting up Surfshark on a router.

    VPN And Blocking Bypass

VPN app is one of the best, easiest and fastest ways to bypass site blocking. The user does not need to encrypt personal information, somehow change the IP address. VPN automatically creates a tunnel to sites blocked in your country for one reason or another. And the main advantage is that absolutely all users can use a VPN, even if their experience is below average.

The need for the VPN utility appears when a user is faced with a situation where he cannot get to the domain of a third-party site due to its blocking inside the network. Installing the right software will allow you to visit blocked sites, as well as have constant access to social networks and other resources if they are blocked by an employer or provider. With VPN you will have direct access to the Internet without restrictions.

Note! VPN programs are an additional utility for your browser, do not take up much space, do not require large resources. Moreover, the best VPN we offer is supported by default by all popular web programs.

Should You Consider Buying A Mesh Router

Wi-Fi mesh networks use lots of small routers to create one extensive seamless network that covers every nook and cranny of your home. This is the sort of Wi-Fi that has only been available to large enterprise installations in the past. Now we have products made for average home users, such as the;. Theres also something very similar to this technology, and were talking about Wi-Fi extenders which are routers designed to extend the range of your existing Wi-Fi network.

If you are creating a new network installation at home, it may be worth considering opting for a mesh network. However, not many of them natively support VPN clients, and you can pretty much forget about third-party firmware at this point. Systems such as;Netgears Orbi have native OpenVPN support, but this is an option with a high entry price. However, it is the most future-proof choice of them all.

    Downsides Of VPN Routers

Linksys Business Dual WAN Gigabit VPN Router

    While using a VPN router has its advantages, there are certain downsides that you need to consider as well. These include:;

The setup process can be tricky. If you dont get a pre-flashed VPN router, youll have to set up the VPN yourself. You might find the process complicated, especially if youre not a tech-savvy person.

You trade off some control. Its simple to switch to another VPN server on your laptop or mobile device, but it isnt as easy on a router, which can be inconvenient if youre looking to access geo-blocked content.

Your connection to the router isnt protected. Your data only starts getting encrypted when it reaches the VPN router. This means your unencrypted traffic can be intercepted while traveling between your device and the router. However, this isnt a serious threat as hackers need to be near your home to do that.

Q: Are There Different Types Of VPN Router

For a long time, if you want to use a VPN router, you would have to flash custom router firmware, such as DD-WRT or Tomato. This is still the case for many older routers, but it does deliver far greater customization than a standard OEM setup. In recent years, the situation has changed as VPN use becomes widespread. You’ll now find many routers offering out-of-box VPN support. Check your router specs before purchasing to confirm VPN protocol support, as well as how easy it is to set up.

VPN Routers With Support For Third

If the stock firmware of your router doesnt support VPN in client mode, then you should be able to install custom, third-party firmware, as most modern routers allow this. Flashing is not as complicated as most casual users think, especially since there are numerous guides available on the web.

Its also a cost-effective solution when opting for open-source firmware like DD-WRT, Tomato and OpenWRT. For example, ASUSWRT can be dropped on ASUS routers in favor of Asuswrt-Merlin, a third-party alternative that focuses on firmware fixes. The two biggest downsides of choosing VPN routers with open-source firmware support are voiding your device warranty and the small chance of bricking your router.
