VPN Disconnect After 1 Minute Of Inactivity
Keywords: RRAS-Provider, VPN, IKE, disconnect, 1 minute, KB3201845, KB3206632, Windows 10, Pro, 1607, x64
KB3201845 introduced a crippling bug for me. I’m using the built-in VPN client and after 1 minute of inactivity the connection automatically disconnects. Prior to KB3201845, everything was working perfectly and if I uninstall the update, the VPN connection behaves as expected.
While tracing the RAS connections I was able to find out the culprit, idleTimeOut:
Windows 10 Pro x64 1607 Tracing
Configured IdleTimeOut:4294967295, approx. value used:60
Windows 10 Pro x64 1511 Tracing
Configured IdleTimeOut:4294967295, approx. value used:4294967295
In my test, both Windows had the latest cumulative update installed . Windows 10 1607 has the bug, but Windows 10 1511 does not.I hope a Microsoft Engineer can take a look at this and forward it to the proper channel to have it fixed.
Thank you
Check Your Firewall Antivirus And Router Settings
If your VPN loses connection quickly, something might be blocking it from maintaining a link to the VPN server. In most cases, its either due to:
- Antivirus software. Disable it temporarily to check whether it makes a difference. If it does, add an exception for your VPN apps.
- Firewall rules. The Firewall is most likely disabled on Mac. If the VPN keeps disconnecting on Windows 10, use method 4 in our âVPN connection failed with error 800â error fix guide.
- Router configuration. Try port forwarding the same ports we mentioned for Firewall. If that fails, check method 3 in our guide on blocking VPN use. Do the reverse ensure it says Enable in step 5.

Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client Keeps Disconnecting On Windows 10
My Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client keeps on disconnecting after I changed my laptop and upgraded to windows 10. My internet connection is same and it was working fine on my previous laptop. In Device Manager under Network Adapter I see a warning sign on my Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter. Device Status shows message “;A driver for this device has been disabled.; An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. “.I tried updating its driver but it says;the best driver is already installed. May be this could be the problem. I notice low Wi-Fi signal strength after switching to windows 10. Distance to the Wi-Fi router has not changed.;Can anyone suggest how to resolve this issue.
Thank you

Lets break down the differences for you quickly!

Why Do My VPN Connections Disconnect When My Screen Turns Off
Modern versions of macOS automatically sleep your computer when the display turns off. As the computer goes to sleep, any active VPN connection will be disconnected. By default your display will turn off after several minutes of inactivity.
You can disable this behaviour by going to System Preferences->Energy Saver and tick the “Preventing computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off”. Please check for this option under both the Battery and Power Adapter tabs. The time until the display turns off can also be adjusted in this section.
Modern Windows laptops usually have a feature called Modern Standby . When the screen turns off, these laptops go into this mode, which will reduce the amount of network traffic the machine can send/receive severely to save power. You can change this behaviour by going to Settings -> Power & Sleep and changing the Network connection drop down. On enterprise managed machines, this setting may not appear to users, and instead needs to be changed in GPO. On older Windows Server installs, this will appear as “connected-standby” options.
On Windows machines that don’t support Modern Standby, screen and sleep settings are separate but may be set to the same interval. You can change this by going to Power & Sleep Settings, and changing the timers for when your screen turns off or when your PC sleeps.

What Causes A VPN To Disconnect

As for the cause behind your VPN disconnection, the VPN software and server frequently communicate with each other using a cryptographically signed ping packet sent every 10 seconds. The purpose of this activity is to inform the other side that they are active.
If the client doesnt receive the ping packet from the server for a period of 120 seconds or more, it assumes that the server is unavailable and disconnects from it. This happens because the ping packets are either lost or blocked on the path between your device or server. This can be caused by an unreliable internet connection or any hardware or software router filtering these packets.

Option : Get A Kill Switch VPN To Stop Internet Traffic When VPN Disconnects
As VPN behaviour on unreliable network connections is not a new thing, VPN providers have included the option of cutting all Internet traffic when the VPN is not connected = kill switch. So, if you get disconnected while running a VPN connection, the device will not automatically reconnect to the Internet unless the VPN can connect to the server first. This makes sure that your private data is not exposed when dealing with flaky Internet connections.
The pros of this solution is that most of the major VPN providers nowadays offer this functionality so its easy to find one that would fit your needs strictly from the security point of view.
A big downside for this option is that the VPN provider might have its own issues with the servers, not related to your Internet connection performance. This might prevent your device to successfully connect to the Internet, even though it could safely do so with another server. So, youll have to manually try with another server or give up that option altogether, just to be able to enjoy some online time.
Switch To A Different VPN Protocol
As a rule, you should ideally only ever be using OpenVPN or IKEv2 as your VPN protocol. These are the most secure options that dont sacrifice much in the way of connection speed.
OpenVPN is by far our preferred recommendation.
So your first step should be to switch from the OpenVPN TCP protocol to the OpenVPN UDP protocol. Theyre almost the same, but UDP is a bit faster because it skips all the error-checking parts of TCP that can sometimes cause high latency.
Some devices dont play nicely with OpenVPN, though especially smartphones. This is why IKEv2 is usually the next option. iPhone users might find themselves stuck with L2TP/IPsec instead, which is weaker on the security side than the other options. Ideally, leave it as a last resort.
So if youre using the most updated version of your VPN app and are connected to a server that shouldnt be giving you any issues, switching protocols could be the solution.

Is Your VPN Provider Imposing Limits
The only limits your VPN provider should be imposing at all are the number of simultaneous connections per account.
But of course, if youre using something like the freemium version of Windscribe, youre also going to have monthly bandwidth limits to deal with.
If its the bandwidth issue, then unfortunately, theres nothing you can do other than upgrade to a paid subscription.
Theres always the chance there are one too many devices trying to connect with your VPN account, though.
The industry standard is for providers to allow 5 to 6 simultaneous connections, so if youre using a decent provider, this shouldnt be an issue at all.
Many will also allow unlimited connections via a router you just need to have the VPN setup on your home router and connect all your home devices to it instead of using the VPN app.
Its always worth double-checking all of your devices to make sure you arent going over the limit. If so, simply disconnect one that isnt being used and you shouldnt have any more issues.
Why Do VPN Services Disconnect

You can finally access those streaming sites that are not available in your region, but then all of a sudden, your VPN services get disconnected, and you lose all the security. Case Study: VPN Disconnects While Walking Down The Street
Experiment time: connect your smartphone to a public WiFi hotspot and start your VPN. Walk down the street in a crowded center city area and watch the screen of your phone. Youll see that as the phone disconnects from the WiFi hotspots or switches to LTE, the little key icon representing the VPN connection on your phone will disappear either for good or for some time. As long as that key is not there, your data is not protected and neither is your online privacy.
Youve got 2 options to fix that: get a VPN with a kill switch or get a mobile VPN. See below what each means.
