Go For A Different Virtual Private Network Provider

If you have tried all the solutions mentioned above and nothing worked, you will have to try a different virtual private network service. Similarly, you will face disconnection problems if you use a free VPN service. You will experience slow speeds, and your internet connection may not be stable. If you are using a free virtual private network, it is time to switch to a leading VPN provider to keep your connection stable and secure.

Free virtual private network services may not have a good server network as a result of which you will be forced to connect to an overloaded server. You cannot expect a safe and secure connection with a free VPN service. For unlimited bandwidth, kill switch, fast speeds, robust security features, and safe connections, you will need a safe and reliable VPN service like the ones mentioned below.

Always remember to look for the following features while selecting a virtual private network.

  • Strong server network
  • Top-notch security features like kill switch, DNS leak protection, and DDoS protection
  • No-logs policy
  • Provides a good number of the simultaneous connection
  • Excellent customer support
  • Money-back guarantee

Connect Using A Different Protocol

If you are still having trouble trying to establish a connection, your VPN protocol could be an issue. The protocol is a network used for exchanging data. The example you might be the most familiar with is HTTP, which stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. This is the beginning of every website you visit in your browser.

Experimenting with the protocol settings may be the solution. You might even be able to improve the speed of the connection by resetting the protocol.

What Can You Do

  • Change the port of the VPN protocol you use to connect, see how to change ports/protocols.
  • Try WireGuard VPN protocol – available in all of our native apps for macOS, iOS, Windows, Linux and Android.
  • Try IPSec with IKEv2 VPN protocol. Setup guides can be found here.
  • Try connecting to a different server, there may be an issue between your device and the server.
  • If you are connecting from a location where you think your connection may be censored, try enabling obfsproxy from within the IVPN client. See how to enable obfsproxy. Instructions for Linux users are available here.
  • Try connecting from another device to see if the issue is with the device. We support a large range of devices, see our setup guides.
  • Restart your router device. Check if there are available updates to your routers firmware – they might contain various fixes and improve the general performance and quality of the connection after installing it.
  • Try another internet connection as your connection may be unreliable, especially shared wireless connections , cellular etc.
  • Advanced users may want to read about MTU and experiment with adjusting the maximum UDP packet sizes for OpenVPN . More information can be found in the OpenVPN manual.
  • Why Do My VPN Connections Disconnect When My Screen Turns Off

Fix Disconnecting error in VyprVPN for Windows/macOS (Updates for 12/10/2019)

Modern versions of macOS automatically sleep your computer when the display turns off. As the computer goes to sleep, any active VPN connection will be disconnected. By default your display will turn off after several minutes of inactivity.

You can disable this behaviour by going to System Preferences-> Energy Saver and tick the “Preventing computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off”. Please check for this option under both the Battery and Power Adapter tabs. The time until the display turns off can also be adjusted in this section.

Modern Windows laptops usually have a feature called Modern Standby . When the screen turns off, these laptops go into this mode, which will reduce the amount of network traffic the machine can send/receive severely to save power. You can change this behaviour by going to Settings -> Power & Sleep and changing the Network connection drop down. On enterprise managed machines, this setting may not appear to users, and instead needs to be changed in GPO. On older Windows Server installs, this will appear as “connected-standby” options.

On Windows machines that don’t support Modern Standby, screen and sleep settings are separate but may be set to the same interval. You can change this by going to Power & Sleep Settings, and changing the timers for when your screen turns off or when your PC sleeps.

Sonicwall Netextender Keeps Randomly Disconnecting For Users

Get answers from your peersJoin Now

We have a few users that use the VPN alot. They’ve mentioned in the past that sometimes when they are on it, it can randomly disconnect and they would have to restart the machine just to get it reconnected. Obviously, this is a pain when you have stuff open from the network when it disconnects and always has to reboot. Previously, everyone was using version 7.5 but have since upgraded to 8.6.265 – but they are still disconnecting.

Any good way to troubleshoot this?

NetExtender has a logging feature that you can read from within the application’s UI, but isn’t very helpful from my experience. To get a better idea of what’s happening, I suggest starting at the Firewall itself.

Connect to the VPN and log your system’s IP Address. Keep this handy for the next few steps.

If the disconnect happens fairly often, then set up a packet capture using the Filter to only show traffic from the VPN system’s IP Address. This will give you the most information about what’s happening and it will also give you error codes that you can reference in SonicWall KB Articles.

If you’ve used packet capture and log monitor yet have no more information regarding the disconnections, then the problem is with the software or connection profile on individual sytems. Delete any remembered settings and remove any SonicWall and NetExtender folders from the Local and Roaming App Data folders

Try A Different Virtual Private Network

If you are using a free virtual private network, performance and speeds may be lacking. Regardless of how valuable the virtual private network is to you, using a leading VPN provider is always recommended. With a leading VPN provider, you could have access to features like unrestricted speeds, unlimited bandwidth, a kill switch that can be toggled, and a secure and robust connection.

When choosing a new virtual private network, research what features are on offer and optimized for online streaming to offer a better experience.

I’m not surprised. I think this is how many VPN software products work, shutting off the non-secure access to TCPIP .I used to use the Nortel VPN client as part of the enabling of my access to customer IBM mainframe computers for TSO and 3270 . Whenever I activated the VPN client I also lost access to the internet for my POP3 Email Client . So I had to live with no email on my desktop/laptop as long as I was connected to the customer mainframe for 3270. Once I completed my mainframe session and stopped the VPN client, normal internet access returned.I’m not sure all VPN clients have this effect, but certainly some do .

Why does my VPN keeps disconnecting?

In some cases, you may have a strong VPN connection when you are connected to a server within your country. For eg., if you are in Canada and you try to connect to a Canadian server, your connection will be strong. But if you try to connect to a server in Australia and if your VPN connection drops very often, then the problem is with your VPN provider. If this happens, you will need to understand that it is high time you need to look for a better VPN provider.

Why Does My VPN Constantly Drop Internet Connection

Almost all VPNs work the same way. They use a single Internet connection and create an AES encrypted socket with the VPN server. All of the data that is sent or received by your device must first be sent over the VPN server for encryption. This requires a lot bandwidth. The amount of traffic over your Internet connection increases significantly.

But, the VPN software essentially puts all the eggs in one basket. If something happens to the Internet connection being used, there is no failover. The connection is broken. Your device is disconnected from the VPN server. This can happen if your cell signal suddenly becomes unstable or if there is an issue with the Wi-Fi connection you are using.

Most VPN software does not use channel bonding. This means that even if your device is able to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi and mobile data simultaneously, the VPN will only rely on a single connection. You dont benefit from the extra bandwidth or connection redundancy. So, your VPN will disconnect every few minutes to leave you unprotected.

Any problem at all with your Internet connection, even if it just momentary outage or fluctuation, and you experience VPN disconnect.

Wifi Disconnecting When VPN Is Enabled In Windows 10 / 11 Fix

    December 24, 2021 By Harshwardhan

Using VPN on PC has numerous advantages, it comes with its own set of issues. Although these issues are not very common, they can get really irritating at times and difficult to fix. One of such issues that we are going to talk about is Wi Fi disconnecting when VPN is enabled. As reported by various users, as soon as VPN is enabled on their PC, the internet stops working automatically.

Enabling VPN could possibly interfere with different settings in your PC, so you could never be sure what exactly is causing it. However, here are a few things that majorly could go wrong:

    a) You are only disconnected from the Wi Fi network you are connected to. You can simply go ahead and reconnect to the Wi Fi network and the issue will be fixed.

    b) As soon as the VPN is switched on, the Wi Fi card on your PC is disabled automatically. Here again, you can try to connect back to your Wi Fi network by simply turning on the Wireless network card manually. Usually theres a shortcut key on your keyboard to toggle wireless card on / off.

    c) You are unable to access internet after enabling VPN, even though your PC is connected to the Wi Fi network.

    Why Is My VPN Disconnecting

VPN drops are a common problem because these services are very sensitive to many factors.

The real issue, however, is the fact that when your VPN disconnects, all the protection it delivers no longer works.

And if you aren’t using a “kill switch”, then your IP address and data is exposed and available for all to see from the moment your VPN disconnects until you finally get it reconnected.

So, what causes your VPN to disconnect so frequently and randomly? Here are the five most common causes of VPN drops.

VPN Keeps Disconnecting Heres The Solution

Fix VPN connects and then automatically disconnects on Windows 10

Ive had occasional problems with my VPN connection and while its usually an easy fix, VPNs arent good at telling you why connection issues are happening. Random disconnections are incredibly frustrating, especially when you cant work out the cause.

To help you solve the most common issues, Ive created an easy troubleshooting guide for patchy VPN connections. While these fixes only take a couple of minutes, its also a good idea to use a quality VPN to reduce and even eliminate connection errors.

ExpressVPN is the #1 VPN for reliable and smooth connections with its best-in-class global infrastructure. Its even backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can buy with confidence. When I tested the refund policy to ensure it works, my refund was quickly approved over 24/7 live chat and the money returned to my account in only 5 days.

    Check Your VPN Software Version

Works with: Desktop and mobile devicesDifficulty: EasyRisk:LowTime: 1 minute or less

Your VPN client should prompt you to upgrade to the latest version. However, if youve clicked Ask Me Again Later and then forgotten, you could find that the latest upgrade contains the fixes to your connection issues.

Its essential to ensure your VPN client is up-to-date as this gives you the best chance of avoiding crashes or connection problems. It also keeps your software running at the highest security level, as updates can include patches for potential vulnerabilities.

    The Device Software Isnt Up

Another possibility for this issue arises when the device itself isnt strong enough to connect securely through VPN protocols. This can happen if an older model of phone tries connecting via UDP rather than TCP so make sure all devices meet the minimum specs before trying to use them with a VPN service!

Why Isnt My Free VPN Connecting

Free is always tempting and there are some good free VPNs available but most of these freemium services are extremely limited to tempt you to upgrade. Youll only have server connections in a handful of locations and data caps preventing you from streaming, browsing, and torrenting as much as you want.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of shady VPNs that will secretly log your private data and sell it to third parties. Worse still, some free services have been known to contain malware intended to steal your data, putting you at risk of identity theft.

Location Of The Virtual Private Network Server

In some situations, you may have a robust virtual private network connection when you are connected to a server within your region or country. For example, if you are in Canada and try to connect to a US server, your connection will be strong. But if you try to connect to a server in Australia and your VPN connection drops often, then the problem is with your virtual private network service. If this happens, you will have to understand that it is high time you need to look for a better VPN service.
