Check If Your VPN Works With Local Servers
When to try it: VPN refuses to connect while youre in a different country
Works on: Desktop & Mobile
Unfortunately, there are some places in this world where the right to privacy is often forgotten, and bypassing censorship is an everyday struggle.
When traveling to such locations you may encounter connectivity issues with your otherwise-perfect VPN. Most users who plan trips to these countries make sure to prepare accordingly, but if youve skipped that step, you may end up with a VPN that simply wont work in your current location.
The reasons range from strict VPN blocks and blacklisted VPN websites, to providers shutting down servers because they dont have the resources to work around invasive data retention laws. For you, the user, this sadly means that if you havent done your homework and arrive in a country where VPN use is restricted, you may not be able to fix this problem after it happens.
The only real solution is to make sure youve installed and configured the right VPN for your destination BEFORE you reach it. For your own safety, we dont recommend looking for VPNs while in a country that actively monitors online activity with serious consequences.
Tip: If youve come well-prepared but youre still having connectivity issues, make sure to check out special VPN settings. For example, PrivateVPN features Stealth mode, provided specifically for countries with heavy censorship and VPN restrictions:
Try Connecting On A Different Network
Your network may be causing your VPN to keep on crashing. To rule this possibility out, try connecting to a different network to see if the VPN continues to crash. If you confirm that the problem is with your network, youll know that something about your network causes the VPN to crash. Check your Wi-Fi or Internet settings to see if you can find something that prevents your VPN from functioning properly.

Why Is A VPN Not Connecting
Your VPN could have connectivity issues for many reasons. Before getting annoyed or disappointed by your service provider, try these methods:
Check whether your internet connection is alright
First of all, check your internet connection. Try loading up a few pages without a VPN connection and see whether they are still working.
If its not, try the following:
Weve also got tips on how to increase your Wi-Fi bandwidth.
Check your credentials
If you run a VPN on your router, make sure you have the right credentials entered for it as they are separate from your VPN account. If they are incorrect, you wont be able to connect.
If you use NordVPN, you can easily check them via the user control panel, which can be accessed from our webpage. Choose NordVPN under Dashboard on the left. Then scroll down to Advanced configuration and see your username and password in the Service credentials section.
Also, make sure your firewall does not block VPN connections. Add VPN software to the list of exceptions in your firewall settings.
Contact customer service
If none of these methods help, contact your provider’s customer service and inform them of your concerns. NordVPN support is available 24/7, so you can reach us anywhere, anytime.
Why Do You Need A VPN
The most basic use of a VPN is to ensure privacy. It not provides a secure channel for the exchange of data but also masks your online footprint. Whenever you connect to the internet, your location can be tracked using your IP address. Government or private monitoring agencies can even track what you are doing. Every item you search for, every website you visit, and everything you download can be monitored. A VPN saves you from all that snooping. Let us now take a look at the primary applications of a VPN.
1. Security: As mentioned above, one of the most important features of a VPN is the secure transfer of data. Due to encryption and firewall, your data is safe from corporate espionage and theft.
2. Anonymity: VPN allows you to maintain anonymity while on the public network. It hides your IP address and enables you to stay hidden from government monitoring. It protects you from the invasion of privacy, spamming, target marketing, etc.
3. Geo-censorship: Certain content isnt accessible in certain regions. This is called geo-censorship or geographic blocking. VPN masks your location and hence allows you to circumvent these blocks. In simple words, the VPN will enable you to access region-restricted content.

Use A Speedier VPN Protocol
Instead, switch to faster and lighter protocols like IKEv2, L2TP/IPSec, and SoftEther if possible. PPTP is also an option since it offers very high speeds, but we wouldnt really recommend it due to its lack of proper security.
Generally, IKEv2 and SoftEther are great options if you need protocols that offer fast, smooth speeds alongside top-notch security.
Check The VPN Application’s Logs
VPNsa often do a very bad job of reporting on connection issues, and even if they seem to have given you a clear explanation of why you can’t connect, there’s no guarantee this bears any relation to the facts.
Sometimes, the real cause of your problems is hidden in the app’s logs. Browse its Settings box, look for sections like Connection Log, or Troubleshooting. You won’t understand 90% of the content – no offence intended, we don’t either – but scroll through the most recent entries anyway for clues. If you see an authentication error, for instance, that indicates a password or account problem, which very clearly tells you where to look next.

- Right-click the VPN connection adapter > click Properties
- Click the Networking tab
- Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 option
- Click the Advanced button > IP Settings Tab
- Uncheck the Use default gateway on the remote network option
Now see if your problem is fixed.

Uninstall Old VPN Software
When to try it: VPN is crashing and/or has connectivity issues
Works on: Desktop & Mobile
If youre a careful consumer, youve probably tried a few different VPN services before deciding on your current one. While we applaud you for the smart shopping, you should also know that too many VPNs can sometimes mess up your connection even if you dont use all but one of them.
We recommend keeping a clean inventory when it comes to VPNs, so another advice for dealing with constant VPN crashes and poor connectivity is to remove any old VPN software you arent using. Keep in mind that simply deleting the files wont do anything youll need to uninstall the programs from your devices control panel.
Use Udp Instead Of Tcp
This is a good fix if you insist on using OpenVPN, or if your provider only offers the OpenVPN protocol. While TCP is the standard for online connections due to its error correction features, it tends to be slower than UDP.
Since UDP doesnt include error correction, any data that goes through the protocol takes less time to arrive to its destination.

Change The Network Port
When your device connects to a VPN server, and communicates with it, it uses a network port. VPN clients will normally allow you to pick which port the connection will use at least for certain VPN protocols.
Theres a chance that the VPN server isnt communicating well with your device through the port youre using. Alternatively, your ISP might slow down any traffic that goes through said port usually because they want to throttle your bandwidth.
So, try switching between different ports to see if you get better speeds.
Re: Secure VPN Will Not Connect

I don’t understand why I cannot connect to Secure VPN and have never been able to since installing Norton 360 months ago.
The My Norton control panel shows that my Secure VPN connection is unprotected and when I click on the yellow ‘turn on’ box in Windows 10, I get a NortonLifeLock message informing me that Secure VPN is establishing a safe network connection, but this immediately followed by an error message stating “Secure VPN has experienced a connection failure. Please try again later”.
It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I try later, because exactly the same thing happens and I’m no further forward.
I have the same problem on both of my Desktop PC’s which are supposed to be protected by Norton 360.
Any help would be appreciated.

Make Sure Your VPN Is Compatible With The Site Or Service
Make sure your VPN is able to access the service youre trying to use. Although VPNs are incredibly sophisticated at circumventing geographically blocked sites, the sites themselves can be just as clever.
One of the hardest to crack is Netflix, which is ironic, as its also one of the main reasons people install a VPN. Why? Well, using a VPN, you can, in theory, access Netflix content from each corner of the globe, meaning movies, documentaries and TV shows before theyre available in your country.
Not all VPNs play nice with Netflix, so its worth checking the providers website first. If its not compatible, there is no fix youll just have to pick the best VPN for Netflix instead.
Try Changing The Protocol
Your level of encryption has a direct correlation to the speed and quality of your connection. The protocol used by your VPN may be causing your VPN to disconnect. We mentioned that the safest protocol is OpenVPN, and we dont advise you to make any permanent changes. But if your VPN keeps disconnecting, you might want to switch between protocols just to see if the connection issue still persists.

Open the App Store and tap on your Account icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Scroll down to the app updates section and check to see if an update is available for your VPN app. If one is, tap Update to the right of the app, or tap Update All.
Update Your Copy Of Windows
Even though the problem may be on your iPhone’s end, the outdated OS can also cause the phone not to connect. This is why it is also imperative to update Windows.
To do that, follow these steps:
Windows will check for available updates and update to the latest version.

Abnormal VPN Internet Connection: One of the most common reasons why is my VPN not working is that the VPN internet connection fails. You can check if the Wi-Fi network or other is working and try to reconnect, and afterward, see if the Routing and Remote Access Services are running in your VPN tool. If it’s accepted by the VPN server, try to update your browser and applications requiring VPN connection because some VPN suppliers only endorse some specific program versions. Restarting devices or using another device to connect is also suggested as the reason why your VPN is not connecting might be hardware-related.
Incorrect Login Credentials: Have you checked if your credentials are valid when VPN stops working? Probably, you forget to renew your VPN membership or the service provider changes the game rules. Thus, check if your membership has expired and needs to be renewed. If not, go to assure pricing and software update on the VPN official website, particularly for free VPN services, in case you need to reset your account or upgrade the VPN software.
Blocked VPN Services in Firewall: Also, you need to grant VPN permissions in the firewall of your device in case it’s get blocked by the firewall.
Switch To A Different Network
Try using a different network, such as a public Wi-Fi connection , to see if the connection problem is with your current Internet service.
If this is not an option, try to disable and enable your network interface, re-install the ethernet driver and close any background network management software you have running.

Set Your VPNs Dns Address Manually
This should not be necessary in most cases, and you will need to contact your VPN to find out exactly what DNS address to use. In addition, always ask your VPN whether they believe this is necessary before continuing.
When you have the DNS address, head to Settings> WiFi and click on the next to your WiFi network. Next, Tap Configure DNS, select Manual and then tap Add Server to enter the DNS address provided by your VPN.

Cant Establish Tunnel Connection
There are two known possibilities as to why your VPN client will fail to establish a tunnel connection to the servers. The first is where your router is always performing IP packet filtering.
Mostly, IP packet filtering will make it difficult to establish IP tunnel traffic. In this case you will need to check the VPN client or the server, as well as any other device on the network for IP packet filters. To do this:
- Go to the advanced settings of your target devices TCP/IP properties page
- Choose filtering
- Tap on the properties button to disable the option
Another possible problem could be an issue with the proxy server found between the VPN client and the server. If the proxy server sends packets to the server directly, rather than from the VPN client, then a NAT translation occurs in the traffic.
This occurrence will occasionally bar tunnel connection from being established. Mostly, if you are connected via OpenVPN, we advise that you consider connecting over L2TP/IPSec. Again if you are already using the L2TP protocol, try using OpenVPN.
Additionally, while it may not be entirely ideal, we also encourage you to try PPTP and see if the problem is solved.
VPN Connections Going Down
- Add exceptions for the VPN to your firewall and antivirus/antimalware program.
- Use a lighter VPN protocol instead of a resource-intensive one like OpenVPN.
- Connect to the web over cable, or enable bridge mode if youre using multiple routers.
- Switch to a different DNS server.
- Use a VPN server thats physically closer to your location.

Change Your VPN Protocol
A VPN Protocol is a set of rules that assist in connecting the VPN client and VPN server. VPNs use different protocols to connect to the server that includes:
- L2TP .
UDP is commonly used, although it is sometimes blocked when connected to a network. Follow these steps to fix this:
- Go to your VPNs software settings
- Choose the most suitable protocol.
- Restart your computer.
Now check if the issue is fixed.
